The strange thing about this album that until sometime i thought it was the worst album by Opeth.. listening to it further more made me realize it was the point where they manged to make the perfect sound of prog death metal and still music mean something to u and the feelings here are intensed ....an important thing that Opeth newer albums lacked of.. and i think credence is the best acoustic track Opeth played...if it isn't the only one

"Demon of the Fall" is my favorite song from this album.

This is a great album. Like it's younger, more popular brother, Still Life, it is a concept album. To really appreciate it you've got to read along with the music as it tells a story and there are lyrics even for the instrumental tracks (which I think is a great idea). Also, the name of each track is the last word of the lyrics for the previous track.

Probably the only major downfall is the sub-par production, but overall the writting, performance and composition of the album are, well ... Operfect!

Guys for you who own this album, do you recommend for to get the album version of it (stand-alone CD) or to get it part of the Candlelight Years collection? I'm picky about the art-work, lyrics, linear notes and stuff like that and I was afraid the box-set could have any of that stuff missing. So if you have an idea I'd appreciate to know, thanks.

I bought the Collector's Edition Slipcase and it was basically just a box of the original albums, nothing additional. Chances are it's the same with the Candlelight box set.

Ahhhh what a masterpiece! Probably their "artsiest" album of all, I like how the last couple words of a track is the title of the upcoming song.
It's way better than the previous "Morningrise" album, no doubt!

For a while this has been my favorite album by the band. While my views on it may have changed, it will forever remain a powerful album that shows once again what Opeth is made of.

Newfound appreciation for this album. The majestic lyrics... I am not the one to be nitpicky on lyrical content generally, but this one... pure magic.

Yeah, I know now. It still works pretty damn well too.

This is my favourite Opeth release because not only does it have the best riffs, there is minimal repetition and more rapid progression. It seems more focused then most of their other albums.

For me, All Metalhead should have this album.This is briliant album with some heavy riff, lyrics, and the deep-meaningfor each songs

Once again Akerfeldt's growls and the guitar work are the highlights of the album, but this seems to be more of a melodic death metal album than prog - no complaints from me about that. The production comes across a little thin and as a result the music doesn't sound as heavy as I'd like, but this is still one of Opeth's most crushing albums overall. The clean vocals aren't as smooth and have a bit of depth to them, not unlike what you'd hear from a gothic metal vocalist. Apparently Akerfeldt was sick during the recording and I'm willing to bet that played a large part in his delivery. Maybe if he did that more often I'd like this band more.

Interesting, I wasn't aware of that. I love his vocals on this album and it's also my favorite Opeth album so I agree, he should get sick before recordings in the future.

Great album, more extreme as previously 2 , I like prolog, epilogue here.
It had more extreme parts not calm variations of melodies ad prev. 2 albums , and calmer vocal parts.
I did listened it while was driving to Skellfteå

This album is definitely one I have heard the most times and still enjoy it as much as the first time I heard it. I remember how amazed I was the first time I heard this absolute masterpiece. Amazing to me how much I still love this record to death. Thank you Opeth for this album.

It is an incredibly great album. In my books it has even more credits than by most people here. It is among their best works for me. Morningrise and Still life probably slightly better, maybe even BWP and Orchid, but this is really marginal.
April ethereal and Demon of the fall are some of the best songs they have ever written.

This album is really where Opeth found their "sound," or at least the one they'd flirt with up until Heritage (barring Damnation).

They had some great ideas here. Wonderful artwork, more concise songs, increasing the savagery of the harsh vocals, the final lyric of the songs being the title of the next song, the production is really good...

There are a couple of truly great songs, but I also don't think a lot of these songs blossomed into what they could have been. There are some very good moments/sections, but there are also some pretty blah ones.

It's the first time I've listened to it in years, so maybe i'm just talking outta my ass and need to listen a few more times. 😁

Opeth's 4th best after Blackwater Park (10/10), Still Life (9.9/10) and Ghost Reveries (9.8/10) IMO.

9.0/10 for me - 'April Ethereal' and 'Demon Of The Fall' are the standout songs. 'When' and 'The Amen Corner' are also good.
