Masterplan - Vocalist Leaves The Band

Vocalist Mike DiMeo (ex-Riot) has confirmed he parted ways with Masterplan. On a blog on his MySpace he writes as follows:

"I did some really cool session work and have a bunch of releases slated for 2009 of which I am really looking forward to. One of them is with Australian band "Ilium" and I am really happy with how it turned out. I also do want to confirm that I am no longer working with the Masterplan guys, although I have nothing but profound respect for them and continue to wish them nothing but success in the future." (Read the whole message here)

Although Masterplan has yet to announce a replacement for DiMeo, guitarist Roland Grapow wrote in an online posting in November that the band had commenced the recording sessions for a new studio album, which is tentatively expected in May/June via AFM Records.

Gojira - Another New Video Online

"All The Tears", the new animated video from French metallers Gojira has been made available online. "All The Tears" comes off the Gojira's latest album, entitled "The Way Of All Flesh", which was released on October 13, 2008 via Listenable Records. The clip was directed and made by Spanish artist Jossie Malis.

Drummer Mario Duplantier comments: "We first came accross Jossie's work with his astounding animated films: Bend It To Machine and we really liked the way he told stories in a very mysterious and unusual manner. His enigmatic animations deal with serious issues and are yet always permeated with a sense of poetry. We, as music writers, are trying to mix very different emotional atmospheres. We are happy to present a visual/audio work that gathers the sort of brutality of our music with the sensibility of his drawings."

Death Angel - Announced New Bassist

Bay Area Thrashers Death Angel have issued the following statement about their new bass player:

"Death Angel is pleased to announce, and welcome new bassist Sammy Diosdado to the line up! A bay area native who formerly played with the S.F. Hardcore band The Sick. Also in San Francisco's Punk n' Roll outfit "All Time Highs!" featuring Mark Osegueda from Death Angel on lead vocals. With his in your face punk assault on bass, and on stage he was the perfect fit to fill the shoes of former bassist, and founding member Dennis Pepa who brought the punk attitude to Death Angel on albums, and on stage!"

Vocalist Mark Osegueda states: "I could not be more thrilled! People in the Bay Area who have seen Sammy on stage know what I'm talking about, and now it is time for the rest of the world to see! Sammy just Plain ROCKS! So I urge all Death Angel fans to welcome Sammy to the Death Angel family, and come see us live when we come to your town that will be all the convincing you will need that we made the right choice!"

Mithras - Announce New Frontman

As posted on Saturday the 10th of January, 2009, on the official Mithras website:

"Mithras would like to welcome Sam Bean (The Senseless/ex-The Berzerker) into the fold as their new vocalist/bassist. Sam was the only person asked to audition for the spot and dominated the tracks chosen for the audition with his brutal vocal delivery and deft basswork.

Founder/guitarist Leon Macey commented: "Since joining Sam in his band The Senseless back in 2007 (as drummer) we've been working together closely on the new The Senseless record 'The Floating World', so I know we gel extremely well musically and have a similar attitude and vision. This combined with the huge amount of band/live/industry experience he has from all the work he's done with The Berzerker makes him the perfect guy to take the role and help lift Mithras to the next level. We're going to get gig-ready asap then simultaneously start slaying audiences while working some more on the new Mithras record."

Sam commented, "I'm a long-time Mithras fan, so this is pretty sweet. I've always seen Mithras as being one of the top UK death metal bands and have listened to them often, wondering how amazing the material would sound live. Looks like I get to find out now! Rayner's shoes are big ones to fill - figuratively, literally, - and I hope to do justice to his great work. It's also good to be working with Leon and Ben, two powerhouse dudes who share the same taste in brutal, freaky, evil music. I want to get out onto stage, throw down, and bring in a new era for the band and death metal in general. This year, we're going to rock you." Sam continued, "the audition was great, third song in I blew up the bass cab. I take this as an auspicious sign."

Drummer Ben said, "so after a relaxed but blasting audition with Sam it seems that he is bursting with enthusiasm to fuel the fire! I reckon working with Sam will be great and that Mithras can now progress even further into the torrent of atmospheric blasting! So Mithras troops, prepare yourselves! Cap'n Mithras and co are brewing up a shitstorm of big gigs and a new record that will blow your socks off!"

Sam rounds out the Mithras lineup which is currently Leon Macey (guitars), Ben White (drums) and Sam Bean (vocals/bass). Mithras' third album 'Behind the Shadows Lie Madness' was released worldwide by Candlelight Records in April 2007."

Thanatos - New Album On The Way

Long-running Dutch death/thrash metal band Thanatos are busy mixing a new album. Thanatos guitarist/vocalist Stephan Gebédi has poted the following message on the band's MySpace:

"It took us a fucking long time, but in a couple of months, "Justified Genocide", our 5th full length album, will finally hit the shelves. The album is currently being mixed by Dan Swanö and it's great to see the album actually (and finally) taking shape now. After all the delays and the record label shit we've been through once again, it's a real good feeling to listen to the - almost - finished recordings now. It's pretty safe to say that this album will have the rawest, most dirty and "in your face" sound we ever managed to achieve on a Thanatos record. It features some of the fastest, most aggressive shit we ever recorded, but of course we also have some slower, heavier parts. The emphasis definitely lies on thrash metal, but as always there's also some death metal in our songs. Judge for yourself in March. We'll upload another song (rough mix) on our MySpace page in early February. We'll also make sure that the album will be directly available through our website."

The title track of the forthcoming CD as well as the song "They Feed On Fear" can be streamed on http://www.myspace.com/thanatos666.

In 2009 Thanatos will celebrate the band's 25th anniversary since they first emerged from the Netherworlds. The band recently signed a record deal with Deity Down Records.

Currently the quartet is comprised of founding member Stephan Gebédi (guitars/vocals, guitars in Hail Of Bullets), Paul Baayens (guitars, Hail Of Bullets, Asphyx), Marco de Bruin (bass) and drummer Yuri Rinkel (Melechesh).

Candlemass - New Album Details

According to a Nuclear Blast posting, the one and only masters of Epic Doom, namely Candlemass, have just revealed some crucial details about their upcoming album. The release date has now been set for March 27th, and disciples of the Doom sound can expect eight mighty hymns on "Death Magic Doom"!!! The tracklist reads as follows:

01. If I Ever Die
02. Hammer Of Doom
03. The Bleeding Baroness
04. Demon Of The Deep
05. House Of 1,000 Voices
06. Dead Angel
07. Clouds Of Dementia
08. My Funeral Dreams

In December, bassist/songwriter Leif Edling commented: "We've worked on all autumn and it feels really good that it is completed. The sound is superfat, heavy as hell, and very organic/dynamic at the same time. Our friend Chris Laney (Laney; Randy Piper, Zan Clan) has done a great job mixing it!! I personally think this album is the best one of the three we have released in the new millennium, easy!! It is bigger, better, louder and a bit more mature, I must say!! It is our "Heaven And Hell"."

Power Quest - Part Ways With Bassist

Power Quest have issued the following update:

"Unfortunately, we have to begin 2009 with some sad news. Bassist Steve Scott has decided to make his move to New Zealand a permanent one and as a result has decided it is time for him to leave Power Quest. We are all very sorry to see him go but wish him all the best in his new life in New Zealand."

Steve Scott commented: "Well, it's been almost 10 years with Dragon Heart (now DragonForce) and then Power Quest playing alongside keyboard legend Steve Williams. Looking back over those years, it has been a fabulous time both recording and touring. Too many funny stories, as usual, from the tours to go into, but maybe I'll write a book or bring out a DVD with it all. I would like to thank the guys in the band and management for the great times we have had and I wish them all the best with the future tours and recordings. Life is so sweet here Down Under that it just makes damn good sense to me and to the band to pass the 'torch' of power metal bass playing over to someone else... someone who lives a bit closer than the other side of the world... so the quest goes on."

Power Quest keyboardist Steve Williams added: "Well, it is the end of an era, for sure. Having formed the band with Steve back in 2001, and having played together since 1999, it will certainly be strange not having him alongside us. As you can tell, Steve seems totally happy with his life in New Zealand and that's a cool thing. Thanks for everything over the years, dude; we're gonna miss ya!"

King Diamond - Shoots Down New Mercyful Fate Album Rumors

In a blog on his MySpace, King Diamond is setting some facts straight, regarding to the interview he did for a Danish newspaper just before Christmas:

"The second rumour that's floating around, which is that Mercyful Fate has started writing new material, I really have no idea where it originated from. The present status of Mercyful Fate remains unchanged, meaning that we have not started writing new material. For that to happen, Mercyful Fate's recording contracts have to be renegotiated first. We certainly would love for this to happen so that we can finally make our long overdue "masterpiece". Both guitarist Hank Shermann and I are ready to go if that scenario presents itself, and who knows, that might happen this year.

So... for this year, you will see a double DVD of old private King Diamond video recordings and a double DVD of old private Mercyful Fate video recordings which I am working on as we speak. Guitarist Andy La Rocque has finished remastering "The Graveyard", "Spider's Lullabye", "Voodoo", and "House of God", all of which should also be available this year. And then there is "the big surprise" (not little King babies with horns on their foreheads or Mercyful Fate writing new songs, at least not as we speak) but something that could lead to renegotiations of the Mercyful Fate recording deals. We'll see. Be patient... On a personal note, I do feel reasonably confident that the Mercyful Fate masterpiece will see the light of day."

Mercyful Fate's last studio album, "9", was released in 1999.
