Kataklysm - New Song Online

A brand new track "The Chains Of Power," from Kataklysm's upcoming record "Prevail" has been posted on the bands new and improved MySpace Page.

Kataklysm vocalist Maurizio Iacono and the band explain the meaning of "The Chains Of Power": "The meaning behind the track "The Chains Of Power" is essential. It's a song the band wrote to give gratitude and strength to all the courageous soldiers who fight for our freedom. It doesn't matter if you are for or against certain wars, nor the bullshit politics that are associated with these topics.

This track is about the people in the world that decide to take a chance with their lives in order to preserve our way of living. While we drink, rock out at concerts and take our daily lives for granted, some soldier is out there in the middle of a Warfield dodging bullets and bombs. This commitment and sacrifice has to be acknowledged, it's our tribute to them and our soundtrack to give them courage. Prevail is a vast album with different faces and this is just a sample of the hammering to come...enjoy!"

"The Chains Of Power" comes from the upcoming release "Prevail", which was mixed at AudioHammer Studios in Orlando, Florida with producer Jason Suecof. The CD, which is scheduled for release via Nuclear Blast Records on May 23 (Europe) and May 27 (North America), features guest solo appearances by Pat O'Brien (Cannibal Corpse), Dave Linsk (Overkill) and producer and guitar shredder Jason Suecof himself.

Prevail will ALSO include a BONUS DVD with a full performance recorded from a live internet concert stream at DeepRockDrive studios in Las Vegas, NV on December 3, 2007.

Bonus DVD track listing:

01 Like Angels Weeping The Dark
02 As I Slither
03 In Shadows & Dust
04 Crippled and Broken
05 The Ambassador of Pain
06 Let Them Burn

Hammerfall - Guitarist Leaves The Band

After 11 years, Stefan Elmgren decided to leave HammerFall. Stefan's message for fans upon leaving the band:

"I have decided to leave Hammerfall, the reason is that I have been offered a job as a pilot within an airline. My interest in aviation has been growing very strong, and now I feel its time for me to take a step and be a pilot on a professional level. We have been discussing the possibility of combining the work with HF and both me and the rest of the band realized that it would be very hard indeed.

It has been a great journey with lots of great memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life, I would like to give a big thanks to all the wonderful fans, its has truly been a pleasure to meet and perform for you all during these 11 years.

I still love to play the guitar so you might hear from me again someday somehow. I would like to wish who ever is taking my place and the rest of the band good luck in the future.

Take care everybody!! Stefan Elmgren"

No replacement has been announced yet.

Two video reports by the leaving guitarist talking about his new job and departure are posted at this location.

Shining - Part Ways With Drummer

Swedish Suicidal/Manipulative Black Metal throne-dwellers Shining made the following entry on their MySpace Blog:

"Due to Jarle Bybergs current situation we have decided that we cannot go ahead with merely him in our ranks. This has nothing to do with him leaving Urgehal last week or anything like that, but he simply hasn't got time enough to tour as much as we do, nor spending month after month in the studio. Therefore, we have now decided to let Schill who accompanied us on the 'Thank God For Niklas Kvarforth' tour last year become a permanent member of Shining.
Welcome my little precious... / Kvarforth, on behalf of Shining."

Shining's sixth studio album will be entitled "Tillbaka På Ruta Ett" (Back to Square One) and is set for a late 2008 release through Osmose Productions.

Stratovarius - Call It Quits

Guitarist Timo Tolkki has issued the following press release on his official website:

Dear Stratovarius Fans,

It is time to stop the silence and announce what some of you have already been speculating. Stratovarius is no more.

Last October I told the guys that I am stopping the band and told them the reasons why. This letter is addressed to you, Stratovarius fans, who have supported the band for so many years. I first thought that I would write just a very generelized, typical "music business" statement that basically never says anything. Then I decided that you deserve to hear at least parts of the truth what has been going on behind the scenes so you will be able to understand my decision better.

All the time, since TK and Jörg joined the band, there have been tensions and negativity flying around. This has been concentrating on me, TK and Jörg. The reasons Jari Kainulainen was fired some years back were so absurd that I am not even try to explain them here. If I write a book one day, maybe then. Anyways, I think the seeds were planted already back then, something like 12 years ago. There were many confrontations, Jörg has been complaining to me about TK and TK complaining to me about Jörg. At a times it was a mess, although of course, it never would show outside to the fans. It is not my intention to disrespect TK and Jörg here. They are both fundamentally good guys. Things just sometimes happen and relationships go to directions we don't want them to go. It's like a divorce, nobody wants it to happen but sometimes it is best for all so everyone can continue their own lives. Plus I want to tell how things have been behind the curtains. You always only see the good side anyway, you don't really know what is going on.

We had amazing years, 14 records, 6 world tours with over a thousand shows all across the Globe, 3 gold discs, a Finnish Grammy and almost 3 million records sold. I have arrived to my decision after careful, long and rational thinking of over a year and I know it is the right way for me. I just felt so bad being in Stratovarius. Something was terribly wrong in there and nobody seemed to care.

The countdown really started from the last Stratovarius album in 2005. At that time the atmosphere in the band was extremely weird. I had spent most of 2004 recovering from my nervous breakdown in April 2004 when I was hospitalized. It was at this point when things started to change. Jens supported me immensely during 2004 with his phone calls. We then did that "Stratovarius" album, which I think is an awful album and went for the subsequent tour production. By that time it was apparent to me that things really were bad. Nobody seemed to care about anything. I had the idea to use projection screens and for that, you need to produce graphics. I planned those and basically the whole show. Nobody seemed to have any interest in it. It was more like, the less the better. The atmosphere at the rehearsals was awful. Lauri Porra who had just joined the band was wondering what is going on with this band. Jörg Michael came straight from Saxon to this tour wearing a Saxon shirt during most of the shows. His attitude for most of the tour was extremely arrogant, pretty much towards everybody. But especially towards me and TK. And TK's attitude towards me was lukewarm and polite, but I could sense the hostility. Of course we as professionals put on very good shows but it was more craftmanship and rehearsed performance than a great united band playing emotionally from the heart. I think TK was always very bitter about that he could not get his songs and/or lyrics on Strato records. I did not understand this really cause he had/has his solo band where he could do what he wanted. It took me many years to learn to simply tell him that I don't like his songwriting and lyrics and that the main difference between me and him is that I am writing songs that end up being Strato songs while he is trying to write Strato songs that end up being Kotipelto songs, which means they belong on a Kotipelto record. It is not easy to say to someone that you don't like his music. You guys and girls dont like all music, neither do I. Neither does TK. I am not anyone to tell what is good and what is bad music, but I do can tell what kind of music I like. And TK's stuff just doesn't do it for me. I do have to say that I think he has written many great songs as well during his solo career. Plus he probably would say the same things about my songwriting. We are just very different. He has a very different sense of humor than I have. Maybe the weirdest thing in Strato was that we never really were friends in the band. I visited TK in 12 years perhaps 5 times. To me Jens was the closest in the band and lately Lauri Porra, who is a wonderful guy. But none of use was really ever real friends. It might be surprising to you but that is the truth.

Battlelore - New Album Update

Folk Power metallers Battlelore have issued the following update on their website:

"Hellos all!
Battlelore started the recordings of their fifth album earlier today at Sound Supreme Studios in Hämeenlinna, Finland, with the producer Janne Saksa. The working title of the new album is "The Last Alliance". Within the next four weeks Battlelore will record and choose up to 9-10 songs from their material to be on this fifth voyage through Middle-earth. The album will then be mixed and mastered by the legendary Dan Swanö. Songtitles set to be on the album are e.g. 'The Last Alliance', 'Exile The Daystar', 'Daughter Of The Sun', 'Third Immortal' and 'Voice Of The Fallen'.

The new material is bigger, better and more epic with a few surprises such as the use of Tomi's clean vocals. The band itself describes the new songs as a beautiful combination of "Sword's Song" and "Evernight", where all the typical musical elements of Battlelore are combined in a new and also unexpected way. Needless to say, the whole band is very enthusiastic and exited to be recording these songs.

Prepare for the album of a lifetime, this one will not disappoint you!
There will be a studiobook running here Link] so keep on checking for photos, texts, videos?"

Metal Storm - Admin On Hiatus After Van Flip, Live Reunion Tour Expected Tomorrow

The world shook today when Metal Storm mastermind Ivan spread the prophetic word he is calling it quits in order to breed cows and ducks. In an official press release the wacko admin dude revealed he is quitting his job and liked the idea of breeding "prize Charolais cattle and handsome Fawn Runner ducks." Some pictures of Ivan showing his livestock at a local meadow and farm near Mõisaküla, a tiny Estonian town boasting a population of only 1081, have been posted online at the official homepage of the official website of the metal webzine of Metal Storm. In other words here and here. (WARNING: explicit content. Get ready to die a little inside). The Bank of Estonia already announced that they will be ready to intervene in case the news will rattle the currency markets.

The MS Staff confirmed the story in the meantime. They added they already saw it coming for a while now. A source inside the Staff even confirmed it's not the first time Ivan was having plans "to retire and cash out in the agriculture sector". Rumour has it Ivan has been thinking about selling the site he founded and created to some famous big farm months ago. He even had a name for it already: "Metal Farm: Home Of Heavy Cattle."

Another source talks about the latest time Ivan left the place. A couple of months ago, Ivan was away for a very long time. Afterwards he told a strange and epic story about photographing the most metal swan ever, meeting a magical talking pumpkin dressed up in a tuxedo who wanted to get "intimate" at a pole dancing contest, Cthulhu appearing to him in a cowboy costume and ordering him to buy country cds instead of the Britney Spears cd that was reviewed later Link], and his search for his long lost twin sister Ivana (widely known from the Austin Powers movie), who looks exactly like Ivan but with longer hair and smaller boobs, and who has a gangsta rap webzine. The source further denied he ever bought mushrooms from Ivan's Metal Farm.

Of course this all sounds like a metalized storm in a teacup at an average Gorgoroth tea party, but the MS Staff didn't throw in the towel yet and decided they will move on without Ivan until his glorious return... Also the Staff announced they will continue to run the site whatsoever and are currently looking for a suitable temporary replacement for Ivan. Among the possible successors is rumoured to be Kariasakis7, who is believed to be one of the most sober, popular and beloved members of the Metal Storm community. He already commented that, if he would get the job, he would change the name to "Matel Sotrm... Ov Booz xaxaxa".

Burning Witch - Re-Issue Release Details

Southern Lord announced this detailed update on the important Burning Witch release:

"After an elongated eternity of anticipation it is with extreme relief that we are able to announce that: "Crippled Lucifer: 10 Psalms For Our Lord Of Light" is finally done and ready to be devoured! These recordings are the roots of much of what has grown into the current existence of Southern Lord alumni: Sunn O))), Khanate, Goatsnake, Teeth Of Lions Rule The Divine etc.. as well as: KTL, Asva, etc..

For the uninitiated: ...After the breakup of the cult doom/death band Thorr's Hammer in 1995, Stephen O'Malley, Greg Anderson and Jamie Sykes formed Burning Witch. The band then added G. Stuart Dahlquist and vocalist Edgy 59, rounding out their lineup. Anderson left the band and moved to Los Angeles to form the band Goatsnake. In 1996, the band (w/out Anderson) recorded songs with Steve Albini, which would become the "Towers..." EP. This collection would actually not see a formal release on 12" until 1998 on Slap A Ham Records. After the sessions for these songs, Sykes left the band and was replaced by B.R.A.D.

The sessions that followed the Albini recordings resulted in the "Rift.Canyon.Dreams" EP, which would prove to be the final recordings by the band, as they broke up soon after the disc was completed. It was released on 12" by Merciless Records. Shortly after disbanding: "Crippled Lucifer" a compilation CD of the two EPs, was released in 1998 by the then new label Southern Lord Records. It was the second release of the label, the first being Thorrs' Hammer. Burning Witch briefly reformed for their last shows in the fall of 1998 after which Edgy 59 left the band. O'Malley reunited with Anderson to form Sunn O))), and Dahlquist joined both in Sunn O))) for their first two albums (The Grimm Robe Demos Void) then briefly joined Anderson in Goatsnake for the "Flower Of Disease" album.

This deluxe double cd re-issue of all Burning Witch recordings will serve as a respectful epitaph for this incredible band. It compiles both the "Towers..." and "Rift.Canyon.Dreams" albums which were on the the original Crippled Lucifer release PLUS the following out of print material:

"Communion" and "The Bleeder" from: split CD with Goatsnake (Hydra Head Records 2000) OUT OF PRINT and "Rift Canyon Dreams" from :split 12" with Asva (Dos Fatales Records 2004) OUT OF PRINT (remixed by Randall Dunn (sunn, boris, earth) and available for the first time ever on cd)

Deranged - Disband After 17 Years

Vocalist Martin Schönherr of Swedish Death metal band Deranged has posted the following news:

"Sad news? A couple of weeks ago Rikard Wermén (drums) decided to leave the band. He's been handling all of the bands correspondence (as well as any other matters concerning the band) the last 15 years and told us that he basically was fed up didn't wanted to do that any longer and therefore decided to leave the band. He's been doing a really great work and has always managed to squeeze in time to handle the bands business. He also said numerous times that he will stay and do whatever shows that was booked but wouldn't handle any correspondence and the likes, and even said if we managed to get a tour later this year, he would stay for that as well in case we hadn't managed to get a new drummer. Fair enough and we thank him eternally for that? Now, Johan Axelsson (guitar) said that he didn't wanted to do the booked shows and wanted to split the band up (coz of reasons unknown) which leaves me and Tomas Ahlgren (bass) no other choice then hereby say that we can't play the following festivals, therefor Deranged are from now on split up."

Cancelled performances:

Fuck The Commerce (Germany) - May 1
Hardtaste Open Air Fest. / Hassleben (Germany) - May 2
Maryland Death Fest. (US) - May 23-25
Death Fest Open Air (Germany) - June 12-14

Timo Tolkki - Forms New Band

In the latest issue of Finland's Soundi magazine, Stratovarius mainman Timo Tolkki reveals that he has formed a new band called Revolution Renaissance, which is believed to have been the working title of the now apparently aborted new Stratovarius album. The group's debut CD ? which will feature guest appearances by Michael Kiske (vocals; Helloween), Pasi Rantanen (vocals; Thunderstone), Mirka Rantanen (drums; Thunderstone), Pasi Heikkilä (bass; 45 Degree Woman) and Tobias Sammet (vocals; Edguy) ? is tentatively due this summer via Frontiers Records.

Michael Kiske indeed confirmed his participation on this CD saying that the songs and the lyrics are quite good. Michi recorded his lead-vocals for five complete songs, including the title-track "Revolution Renaissance".

Says Tolkki: "The contains more or less "Visions"-style Stratovarius' acclaimed 1997 release] power metal. It will come out pretty soon, maybe already in June. Michael Kiske, Pasi Rantanen, Mirka Rantanen, Pasi Heikkilä and Tobias Sammet have recorded their parts. But if there are any live performances, the lineup won't be the same. I have been thinking of asking Jens Stratovarius keyboardist] and Lauri Stratovarius bassist] to join me for this."

Regarding the band's name, Timo said, "On the album, there's one song with this title, and Frontiers suggested it to be the band's name too. I thought it was good idea."

When asked if he will perform any Stratovarius songs with Revolution Renaissance, Tolkki replied, "Well, what do you think? Of course. I can play my songs with whomever I want."
