Roadburn 2017 - First Bands, Warning Performing 'Watching From A Distance'

Get ready, Roadburn enthusiasts because next year's edition is already shaping up nicely! The first announcement was made today and Coven will perform their first ever European show (and the band's first show at all in decades); John Dyer Baizley will be their 2017 curator and Baroness will perform on the main stage as part of his curation; Warning will perform Watching From A Distance in full; GNOD will celebrate their tenth anniversary as their artist in residence. Plus, Zeal And Ardor, Pillorian, Perturbator, Schammasch, Les Discrets and last but not least Oranssi Pazuzu will be performing on the Main Stage (good news for those who missed out this year).

Joining Patrick on stage will be Marcus Hatfield on bass guitar and Christian Leitch on drums, completing Warning's final line-up, and also guitarist Wayne Taylor, who has played bass for the band for some time almost twenty years back, between the demos and the first album, The Strength To Dream.

From Patrick Walker: "I've been approached fairly frequently over the past several years about doing this and I only knew that the time and the circumstances would need to be right. I also understand that this record has left an indelible mark on a lot of people, for most of whom, by the time they became acquainted with the album, were unable to see us perform that music live. I am humbled that there is still an interest in Watching From A Distance all these years on, and I'm going to be very moved to be able to play it for an audience at Roadburn 2017."

If that's not enough to get you excited, many more bands will still be announced.

The 22nd edition of Roadburn Festival will take place on April 20th-23rd, 2017 at the 013 venue, in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Tickets for Roadburn 2017 will go on sale from Thursday, 20 October 2016. They will be available to purchase in person from the 013 venue from 6.30pm local time - and ticket buyers are invited to the pre-sale party at the venue featuring Ortega and Gomer Pyle.

Tickets will go on general sale at 9pm (NED and mainland Europe) / 8pm (UK)/ 3pm (East Coast USA)/ 12 noon (West Coast USA).

The only one I'm not interested in is Perturbator. And I've never heard of Gnod or Pillorian so those are a maybe, but other than that I wanna see every band here. Well, only the final 3rd of Schammasch's set probably, but still.

Perturbator, Schammasch, Oranssi Pazuzu, all would like to see, and Zeal and Ardor, Baroness and Les Discrets would also be good. Probably gonna take a few more announcements of this level or a handful of bands I'd really like to see before I decide to go but that's a good start

Sweet lineup. Looks like I won't regret booking a room in Tilburg in advance.

Funny thing is that months ago some guy commented on Roadburn's facebook page that Schammasch should play Triangle in Het Patronaat. I guess the organizers pay attention to requests.

Was planning on attending this year again but seems I'll wait a bit before buying a ticket.
An hour and a half of Schammasch, party hard in a church to some Perturbator (probably packed as fuck, that is...) or Warning's set should be great. Otherwise, rest is meh/not interesting and not too keen on the curator.

Not at all interested in that Warning set. I'll be abstaining from the "aaaahhhhaaaaahhhhaahhhh" vocals for that one
Schammasch I need to see playing through that third disc of Triangle... depending what's going on, might try to maneuver time to get in on their set right around when they get into it. Oranssi Pazuzu again will be fun, especially since I caught only half of them this year, so hopefully I can manage the full set this time. And Zeal And Ardor is just going to be the best, I can already feel it

If the attendance will be similar to this year then good luck maneuvering in to Het Patronaat

Pillorian is something new involving John Haughm. Not sure they have any material out just yet, as I haven't yet been able to find any. Gnod meanwhile play a somewhat droney psychedelia, with sax too!

Musically speaking, Zeal and Ardor is the biggest announcement for me right now but in terms of sentimental value and what Roadburn is about as a festival... Brining Warning to play Watching From A Distance in its entirety is unmatched. UNMATCHED!

I can understand and respect that album's legacy in doom circles, even if not really enjoying it myself. But... umatched in terms of sentimental value? I don't think anything at Roadburn (that I've seen) can beat Converge's Jane Doe this year for that. Maybe I actually will watch some of that set now to see how the two compare (assuming no clash)

Definitely beating Converge in that department although you missunderstand if you think I'm comparing years, to me that's always irrelevant as each year is independent to the others. I'm just comparing the bands in 2017 as a whole as there will be few sets I can imagine that will be as special next year.

I meant "unmatched" in terms of what Roadburn usually brings to the table in terms of special sets. 2016 was definitely Neurosis/Converge/GISM in terms of unique and (if you ask me) unmissable shows. Warning is definitely the first one on that category of the first batch of bands announced.

Oranssi pazuzu live is probably THE experience.

They were incredibly fun last year. Seeing everyone's heads slowly go up and down at the same time from my view up on the balcony was one of the most memorable Roadburn moments for me. And I mean everyone.

Had no idea who John Haughm was, but since it appears to be some guy from Agalloch I'm not at all interested in Pillorian. Gnod sounds great though, another band I'll try to catch next year.

I feels ya, G. If there's nothing clashing, I'll probably take a peek and cry with you and Marcel, just to see what the fuss is all about, like I did with Neurosis.
Unmatched set for me would be getting Blut Aus Nord to perform live. I'm dead set on that idea after one of Roadburn's main people actually suggested it this year in that magazine they put out each day. A man can dream?

I missed this one; didn't realise it would have such a manic queue and went to the Cult of Luna Q&A. Wasn't this one in Het Patronaat - didn't notice that one had a balcony?

Yeah, in the back there's a set of stairs that leads to a little balcony area that has a bar and some chairs and sofas. Quite nice really.

I'm considering campsite as well... I was hoping for hotel if my sister was up for it next year but she won't make it. Last time I checked you sort of rented a "bunker" (with heat and 4 beds) but the details are a bit fuzzy so I can't tell much.
