Vulgaris - New Video Streaming

UK's Vulgaris are delighted to release a video for their brand new song "Goat Bong". The band said: "This is a blackened sludge/doom song written during the last year. It’s a stand alone single ahead of our new album, which we have nearly finished writing."

Bloody hell, can't even post news about my own band, got it stolen from under me!

I wrote this particular song mostly myself, so I can share the 'backstory' if anyone's interested. At some point early on in the first lockdowns in 2020, one of the guys in the band shared this meme in our Whatsapp band chat (I couldn't find a way to upload it in good quality, but the bottom text over the baby says "your buddies' new lame AF stoner/doom project 'Goatbong' whose new EP 'Wizard Snake Mountain' is 77 minuts long and has 3.5 riffs, only one of which doesn't completely suck"). Goatbong sounded like they should be a blackened (goat) stoner (bong) band, which then motivated me to try and write a blackened stoner song; I guess people can judge for themselves whether it ended up sounding like that. This was a one-off 'experiment', so we decided we'd just approach the song as a standalone single rather than as a starting point for any EP/album project, but we've had a lot of fun playing it (I also enjoyed throwing in as many Satanist, weed and goat references as possible into the lyrics), and we're thrilled with the video (courtesy of Tim Bekir); we couldn't really replicate the story of the song without some arson and violence, so the video's narrative focuses on a character inspired by the 'sin eater' from mythology, who tries to find the spirit of the woods to release him from his torment. We completely fluked out that the one day we did filming, London descended into a thick mist for the whole morning!

Would also add that the track is available on streaming services including Bandcamp from Friday, in case one listen just isn't enough!

The meme is so true.

As you already know, the bass parts stand out for me and I feel that the song as a whole has a more proggy character than your previous tracks. I can tell because I like it more with every subsequent listen and this mostly happens to me when the music is a bit more layered compared to what I usually listen to. Stoner music generally bores me to death; even when I am stoned, I find it very difficult to like a stoner track (Black Sabbath tracks are the exception). This one sounds indeed like a proggy, blackened stoner/sludge track, which makes it a lot more appealing to me. I also like the opening lead guitar melody quite a bit and the last two minutes are my favourite. The cover art is cool af and so are the lyrics.

To be honest, I think you are really onto something here. As a band, you have songs that are quite different from each other, which means that you can really go any direction you want without raising any eyebrows. This is a big plus in my book, especially when I think of bands that corner themselves soundwise for no reason whatsoever. The only problem is that we haven't got the slightest clue what style tags to assign you here.

As far as who posts the news, you cannot really expect to post the news of your own band, that would be way too narcissistic

I wasn't sure in the beginning with the goofy guitar licks, but the rest of the track was killer. Good job!

Where in London did you film this?

The outdoor stuff was somewhere near Croydon; I think possibly Selsdon Wood? And then we went another place nearby for the final shot over the area. The indoors stuff was some rehearsal studio at a theatre in Clapham (they loved us, we set off the fire alarm by using too much haze)
