What should be the non-metalheads stereotypical metal song?

Hmm, probably a song that everyone knows, has an anthemic feel about it and possibly a fast part somewhere, something like Seek and Destroy, Heaven & Hell, Fear of the Dark, Master of Puppets, Breaking the Law, The Hellion/Electric Eye, Holy Diver, Rock You Like a Hurricane, Crazy Train, Symphony of Destruction, Denim & Leather, You Got Another Thing Comin', Wild Child by Wasp.. i find it pretty difficult from that list to choose anything.. probably You've got Another Thing Comin' but that's just me. anyway if you want total stereotypical metal though, as in something like, when showing it to someone who hasn't heard metal in his life, something you can say "90% of metal sounds similar to this" regardless of how many people like/dislike the band, like it or not it's Manowar's anthems, they are imo by far the most typical metal band, it doesn't get much more typically metal than Kings of Metal, Call to Arms, Metal Daze, The Gods Made Heavy Metal, Return of the Warlord or (of course) Warriors of the World United.

Something epic which really sounds metal and at the same time shows all the parts of the genre with speed, atmosphere, beauty and an artistic performance. Therefore my choice is my favourite song of all time: Metallica - Master of Puppets.

Unfortunately we get labeled with stuff from the 80's and power metal, but that doesn't represent the entire metal genre. I would have to say something "Gothenburg". It contains so many elements of all metal varieties IMO, and updates our image a decade or two.

I consider myself a metalhead, but since I don't really like thrash, heavy and power except for a few bands... I don't feel connected to the 75% of the songs that has been labeled as metal anthems.

Yeah I can definitely agree with Master of Puppets or Hallowed be Thy Name for sure! As for a song that represents the more extreme side of metal, maybe Hammer Smashed Face or Entrenched by Bolt Thrower or With Strength we Burn by Emperor....there are wayyy too many great songs to choose from! But yeah, any of these will work for me.

05.01.2010 - 01:13 Written by MetallicA on 04.01.2010 at 03:11 my favorite "extreme" metal song would definitely be Stripped Raped and Strangled by Cannibal Corpse, it's just so evil and shit ATM i'd say we divide the stereotypicals into 2 categories: -melodic metal -extreme metal for melodic i choose Cowboys From Hell by Pantera, and for extreme, well, you know either that or Immortal - Blashyrkh Mighty Ravendark

When I recommend a metal song to a non-metalhead friend, it's usually "On the Shores of Ithaka" by Quo Vadis or something else that's modern and melodic ("Countless Skies" by Be'lakor, "Drawn to Black" by Insomnium, "Monochromatic Stains" by Dark Tranquillity); however, if I had to recommend a song that covered the entire history of the heavy metal genre/culture, it would probably be something older and more catchy Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" or Judas Priest's "Painkiller". If I don't like the person, I tell them to give Darkthrone's "Quintessence" a try. Not once has a person ever thanked me for sharing with them the grim and frostbitten sound of early black metal...

Maybe something like Mastodon's Oblivion should work It has beautiful quiet guitar parts but also a few loud parts! Or to agree with the masses here: Master of Puppets.

05.01.2010 - 23:35 Written by Valentin B on 03.01.2010 at 17:12 Sorry, but that last song will have anyone with decent ears on their head run away. I know a lot of Manowar fangirls go apeshit over that song but it has nothing on the songs off their first three albums. And even then playing Manowar isn't a good idea, cause they don't epitomize metal at all. An old Iron Maiden song, the shorter ones, would be far more suitable.

After thinking about this a bit, but not terribly seriously, i'd go with Motorhead's "Ace Of Spades"... loud, fast, obnoxious, energetic, dirty.
