2001 was just about to become history when I received this cd in the mail. It was three days before 2002 and I found myself on an airplane home to spend the New Year. The plane had just taxied off the runway as I placed Ensiferum's debut self-titled album in my cd player. I had not heard much about this young Finnish band before I had ordered the CD but was told, since I like Moonsorrow and Finntroll, I would eat this cd up for breakfast lunch and dinner. Well, I am still eating it and it sounds better every fucking time.

My first experience with growls started by chance when I was searching amazon for new metal and I discovered the genre of viking metal. This immediately caught my attention and I read several bands with special interest the reviews on Ensiferum, which obviously had some good debut album released in 2001. Then I searched other sources for this band because amazon did not have it available so I got me a copy via eBay. Of a three cd order this was the first one I listened to and I was shocked, because yet I had not come across growls that have a quite aggressive impact on the ear when you hear them for the first time, but the winds from the north a blowing fortunately strong, below I will tell you why:

Got Mayhem?
I put off listening to this album for literally years. Until then the only Ensiferum I had heard was Lindroos era and It didn't do much for me. However, once I finally gave this a spin I was forced to admit this is a fantastic album. From start to finish it doesn't lose a beat. Essential, especially for the genre.

I didn't call it my album of the decade for nothing. I am listening to it now for the first time in a long time, and it's both great and sad... sad to compare it to what Ensiferum are now (which is still a great band... but just not this good...)

True. This is one hell of an album, that displays true inspiration and passion. The later albums and especially the last one have too much fluff and too little songwriting. Symphonic elements for the sake of sypmhonic elements aren't worth much. Well, at least we'll always have this timeless classic.

A staggering album - ten years down the line, it still outruns the competition. On horseback, sword drawn for battle.

When you are sad and angry...you want to shout, sing it loud, want to immerse into your deepest sorrow, painful feelings left inside.....Suddenly ! Cheerful folk music cut in....ancient dressing men and women holding hands dancing, running and jumping happily around you....how would you react ? I will shout "can you shut the fuck up !" In my professional opinion, this album is highly OVERRATED ! Nearly stupid.

This album really is timeless, I listened to it a long way back and even now it is just as awesome! Killer tracks all around, so many of my favourite Ensiferum songs are on this debut (Little Dreamer, Goblin's Dance, Token of Time, Windrider, Old Man, Hero In a Dream)

Bad English
Tage Westerlund
A legend of long haired nordic warrior begins. Its 100% nordic, all about it, artwork is 1th what makes me check out albums. Byff Byfford sakd, as child I liked knights, stories about it Anglo Saxon warriors and so on... As child many of us likes fantasy, swords, warriors, old tales and stories, it stuck into us, and then you put it on on books or metal msuic, because people like we dont grow up as many does, if you do you lost all and your life are so boring, we dont have children. Anyway its great band, music and idea around band, artwork its 100% nordic.

This is a perfect and timeless album, one of my all-time favourites and very important to me! I struggle to find the words to convey how much I love this album.

Their only album I fully enjoy.

The more I listen to this album the more I love it. A masterpiece through-and-through.

9.6/10 for me - Tracks 3-6 and 9 are the standouts IMO. 2, 7 & 11 are all also great. 'Goblins' Dance' is easily the weakest song of the album but is kinda fun in a way.

Over the years I've listened to this more than another album in metal, and still tremendously enjoy it just as much now as I did back then. There is not a single skippable moment on this for me, so for that I can only give this a deserving 10
