The main reason I've always been more into black metal and failed to appreciate most death metal is that I prioritize atmosphere. The most renowned black metal records usually have low fidelity production and minimalist or poor musicianship but are still able to achieve surprisingly strong atmosphere whereas a lot of death metal possesses godlike technique and usually higher production values but is lacking in this particular field. Immolation is one of those death metal bands which do not have this problem and thus have a big appeal.

I can't stand this album, it's just boring as all hell and the drumming sounds like shit... As a drummer i can't stand hearing a decent metal band play shit that makes me sound godly.

Whilst the atmosphere of previous albums seems missing here, there's still a lot of excellent musicianship at bay. There's a lot of infectious groove around but the band's songwriting chops continue to impress on songs such as "Challenge the Storm" and "Son of Iniquity", both of which offer versatility too. Towards the end there is also a slight hint at more bombastic composition, though not so much that the rhythm section is clouded. Another great Immolation album, if overshadowed by its predecessors.

The first 6 songs on their album are nearly flawless.
