Bathory, a legend among extreme metallers and especially Black metal fans, without doubt one of the most important bands in Black metal history. Period. "Bathory", "The Return", "Under The Sign Of The Black Mark" and "Hammerheart": they have all left their mark on the face of metal. Another undeniable classic from the warrior mind of Quorthon, leader of Bathory, is the fourth album named "Blood Fire Death".

"You are walking out of here with that," my metal friend commanded, nodding towards the copy of this album with a five-dollar price tag in my hand. "You won't be sorry."

I had come into the black metal genre rather later than I had gotten into other genres, and although I like it now, it was a bit of an acquired taste for me personally. With such a profusion of bands and very few universally agreed-upon classics, I was looking for a good place to start. Luckily, even the most elitist black metaller would have no issue starting with the legendary Bathory and this incredible classic.

Dont really agree, this owns all other Bathory if you ask me (which I'm sure you were all going to). Under the Sign is a fine album but not a patch on this. Probably the finest album of its era. Exemplifying early black metal whilst looking forward.

Not a perfect album, but very nearly. Two of the tracks sounded very similar in terms of guitar work, but apart from that this remains one hell of a classic album\m/

Classic! Musically, the majority of the songs are still Black/Thrash. Only a few tracks add the Viking sound to them. epic though!

A begging of ''epic'' era, old good Bathory, still thrashy, venom style, but more ''viking'' influence, Scandinavian lyrics, more viking thematic, fast, aggressive, old school Bathory what we all know and love, songs as Fine Day To Die, Blood, Fire, Death , are legends and true Odin worshipers will understand it

Listening to this again after a long time, is there any better riffs then those on "A Fine Day to Die"?

I like Bathory, but I have to admit, other than, 'A Fine Way To Die', 'For All Those Who Died', and 'Blood Fire Death', the rest of the songs are kinda lame and disappointing. And the opening and closing hymns are throwaways to begin with, so you are only left with 3 great songs on this album (out of 7, not including the intro/outro). No way this album gets anything higher than a 6. If the 3 songs were an EP, it would get a 9-10. 'Under....Black Mark', was way better than this.

A good but overrated album. Hammerheart and Twilight of the Gods are better than this.

8.4/10 for me - 'A Fine Day To Die' is the standout track. 'For All Those Who Died' and 'Blood Fire Death' are both also great.

There is a great transition in this album between the old Bathory and the new Viking style Bathory, with the short thrashy old school songs like Pace Til Death, and the brilliant epics, Blood Fire Death and Fine Day To Die.

This seems like the warm up to Hammerheart which for me was Bathory's best and ultimate Viking Metal album.

My first time with black metal experience. This album it's one of a few , who make me love metal more a more . And the idea I was of "dirty sound " of many BM bands. This experience makes me travel to battles and majestic landscapes full of mysticism. Thanks Quorthon . Rest in peace in a majestic warriors place

Yeah it kicked ass. Sick riffs and sing writing. Anyone else see this a huge inspiration to Dissection? (Obviously they influenced a ton of bands)
