The leather and loincloth clad Manowar need no introduction to anyone vaguely into metal. They are perhaps amongst the most polarizing bands in metal - people either love them or hate them, with few in the middle.

With "Hail to England" purported to be their high-water mark, I figured this would be the best place to start. I cast aside preconceived notions, burnt the loincloth images from my mind, and inserted them into iPod rotation?

Once in a while I'll put on an old album I haven't heard in a long time for nostalgia purposes rather than wanting to hear something of actual quality. Manowar's Hail To England, which happens to be one of my first metal albums, seemed to fit that bill perfectly. After all, I do remember having a great time at their live show when they came down here with Rhapsody (either a sign of the apocalypse, or a dream come true depending on perspective). Manowar actually acquired their "cheese cred" after their Hail To England/Sign Of The Hammer releases. Don't get me wrong though, there's plenty of lame moments on this album. All of it just happens to be appropriate for the time and context without aging too badly. So it's not as bad as one might expect.

The best Manowar album, and the one which i like all the songs, no filler, no boring song,

Disagree, for me that would be Into Glory Ride, and the instrumental Black Arrows is the epitome of a watse of album space and boredom.

The mix could have been better in some parts, but a great album overall. Probably my favourite Manowar album. Kill With Fucking Power!

Almost similar as the previous album, though I see this one having stronger individual tracks. I can hear greatness in "Kill With Power", "Black Arrows" (ppl say this is bad, but to me it's a 100% great Manowar track) and the true classic "Blood Of My Enemies".

So this is the album in which this pussies began fighting the enemies of metal. Each note they have played since black arrow has been nothing but an arrow to themselves. Bridge of death marks the point where they also begun sounding like a church choir and a christmas carol act. Only their debut is worth anyones' time.

Many people do not notice, but in the first few Manowar albums, the sound of the guitar is too low and it cannot be heard in the tracks. On the other hand, there are two basses - sometimes three! Joey Demaio is a great bassist and composer, no doubt and is the main figure in this band. But just hear the two albums of 1984 Hail to England and Sign of the Hammer! There's Joey's 8-string bass, which sounds like a guitar, because his strings are very thin (for bass) separately in the record, and there's 4-string bass, and for the guitar just - solos. The only two tracks in which the guitar can be heard are Each Dawn I Die and Armies of Immortals, perhaps because they are composed by Ross the Boss.

Only 30 minutes of music if you discount the horrendous Black Arrows so it's quite a short one. Nice album though, the five first songs are all enjoyable and Bridge of Death, while a bit plodding, is also pretty nice. On the other hand the production sucks, the guitar is way too low and that bass tone is ass. Not sure what they were thinking.

Eventhough this is such an iconic U.S. power metal album, I can't say that I'm overly fond of it. The production is poor quality, otherwise the album could of sounded a whole lot better imo. "Bridge Of Death" is my favourite track, eventhough it does plod on too much in parts, as is mentioned above. The rest of the album doesn't do that much for me, but it dies have it's good moments amidst the cheesiness. And I'm sorry but "Black Arrows" was annoying as hell.

Top 100 album!
Best Manowar album!

Well IGR is really close but BomE and especially BoD are such epic songs. The only song which I skip is Black arrows for I am not a fan of instrumentals.

Epic Metal essential album here.

Easily Manowar's best album and honestly one of the best USPM albums of all time. And if you can't dig that, guess what: Black Arrows is metal as fuck, you're just too much of a wimpy poser to tell. Please, in an orderly fashion, leave the hall.

It’s a shame to see metal fans looking back on these early Manowar with so much venom (and, of course, each to their own opinion!). When I first started listing to the band c.1987 I was in awe of this album - I couldn’t believe how metal it was. Everything about it felt unashamedly over the top, just as metal should be. I think also knew that it was provocative - a lot of my metal fan chums couldn’t get past the fantasy lyrics and leather chaps!

Perhaps, also, Manowar never produced anything quite as consistent as some of the bands at the time and when they did come close there were still flaws. This is probably the closest they came (Into Glory Ride is a close second). There’s no filler here (ok, ok Black Arrows!) and despite the power behind the bass lines, there is so much attention paid to detail, I honestly don’t know what other people are hearing when they put this on and listen to Hail to England, Blood of my Enemies and Bridge of Death, and find anything to criticise.

But me this will always be quintessentially heavy metal - four excellent musicians (listen to those Ross The Boss blusey guitar solos and don’t even get me started on the vocals) striking out on their own path, producing something so full of intent and yet so heartfet and well crafted at the same time. Not to mention the cinematic lyrics born of 1980s swords and sorcery movies. What’s not to love fellas?
