Trivium baffles me. As much as I thought their original style was not particularly interesting to begin with, it is extremely strange for any band to simply throw their old sound out of the window in favor of something else. Yes, this is very strange indeed and yet this is precisely what the guys from Trivium did. To make matters even more complicated, the new Trivium sound is basically old-school thrash (with some heavy metal elements here and there), rooted especially firmly in bands such as Metallica and Testament. The hero worship here is at such a level that we are almost dealing with a tribute album. How does all of this pay off quality wise?

Well, here comes the part that baffles me. I simply don't know what to say about an album like The Crusade. As much as the thrash over here is quite passable, I just can't get over how uniquely unoriginal it is. Call it the Trivium touch or whatever, but once again the band has made an album that is largely unlistenable to me. Don't get me wrong, songs like "Entrance of the Conflagration" or "To The Rats" are actually quite exquisite thrash, with memorable song-writing, sharp rhythms and good riffs; however, the ghost of James Hetfield and co. leers ever so closely all the time behind all this decent music. Even the vocals are an un-mistakable rip-off. Of course, I still think this is an improvement over Trivium's previous formulaic and cliché-laden metalcore-ish sound. Still, it would have been much better if the band concentrated their efforts on a more original result.

In a world where context doesn't exist and solely on its own merits, The Crusade is a good and often great thrash album. Unfortunately, context is something that I just cannot ignore and so overall this album is a disappointment for me.

Trivium really sucks. The worst is seeing them live when you don't want. How bad a band can be when they worship Metallica?

I heard some songs of full metal racket (radio) in Australia. Its stupid that a band would blatently rip something off rather than take in a wide variety of musical influences and put them together to make more of an original sound. If we wanted to hear Metallica, we would listen to Metallica.

Decent album, but yeah, damn unoriginal. They are surprisingly good on stage though.

I feel exactly like you, jupitreas. It doesn't seem like a bad album if you look at it, Trivium did change a bit, which most people don't seem to figure out, and they sound like an early-90's Thrash band, which could be great. The problem is that their songs literally do nothing for me and I can't understand why. I'd even consider this their best album, but, if I was to rate it, I'd probably give the same 4 you gave to "Ascendancy". BTW the vocals are way better now.

Trivium's orginality is scarce in this album. This album is definetly a let down, although originally I loved them & their songs, why listen to them when I can listen to the real Metallica? Definetly A Crap Album.

So bad it's not even rated...I love it! Trivium are balls, why they are dubbed the saviors of metal passes me, I can be a savior of metal if they can! The review perfectly suits my opinion!

For the most part, follows my same thoughts regarding the album.

I heard a couple songs on Ascendancy, and bought. Over-produced and mainstream metalcore? Absolutely. Terrible vocals? Yeah. The guitarwork, while using simplistic formulas, were actually put together reasonably well. I found myself able to enjoy it more than other metalcore albums. Just had to get past the irritating vocals.

To me, Ascendancy sounded like what would happen to a young melodic death/thrash band if ran through the mainstream machine generator, and then told them they're the greatest thing ever.

Crusade came across as just plain hero worship. I was going to pass on this one. But I had to hear it for myself after reading in various magazines about "It's the best album Metallica never made!" and even their attitude in interviews where they consantly say "We're going to be the next Metallica."

Yeah, the album came across as total hero worship. Not even really good hero worship. Entrance of the Conflagration was alright, I didn't mind the song Crusade. These are decent musicians.

While I admire a band for changing style, and many have done it and were good at it (Amorphis for example)... this album comes across as egotistical fanboy-ism.

3.climax: trivium is the gayeeeeest!!!
4.repeat one of the steps above: did i mention trivium is gay?? and the drummer sucks!!
5.grand finale: trivium blows donkey balls!!!!and thsi album sux so much!!!!fuck trivium poser wannabe spice girls!!!!
6.mention trivium being gay(one last time): trivium is so gay!!!!
no offences meant
as for the album, i only heard anthem(we are the fire) and i think it's mediocre. i mean, if i listen to megadeth-tornado of souls, i'll remember it had a wonderful solo. if i listen to judas priest-all guns blazing, i'll remember that ear piercing falsetto at the beginning. but if i listen again to that track, i won't remember anything. simple as that! it's just some generic filler.

I heard that Entrance song on the telly and it sounds pretty good (something which I'd hate to admit in reality), but the big turn-off for me is the hype surrounding them.

I'll also admit Trivium are a talented bunch, it's just a real shame they just play a load of shite!

I have to agree with you on this jupitreas. The album seems to be good in some parts, but it's way too unoriginal and a hell of a rip-off of old Metallica.

I would say this cd is worth a 4.

It comes to be surprisingly curious how a band that comes to be the mere shadow of Metallica can be this enjoyable. Yes, that big and great was Metallica. I have neither bought this album yet nor heard everything from it but what I have heard, a couple of songs, was pretty enjoyable. Yes, Trivium was never that original but Trivium does not come to be the only unoriginal band out there that people are worshipping. I believe that, as long as you realize how limited the greatness of Trivium can be for their lack of originality, there is no problem in enjoying their music.

Yeah, I've seen these guys live and was impressed ... but everything i've heard off this album makes me wonder why they bothered. If you have nothing original to offer, why make a record? Hopefully as they get older they will have the conviction to be themselves...then we'll decide if that's any better.

I was all right with their early stuff and enjoyed them live when they were on tour with Children Of Bodom, and Amon Amarth, as well as with In Flames, Zao, and Devildriver... they were ok at sounds of the underground until this album... it is completly worthless and anyone who wasted money on it I am sorry... It is a rip-off of a band that already sold out so what does that make trivium... hm... the biggest metal sellouts ever... I do believe...

I spare my comments on this album, as saying them would be unintelligent as the words would be harsh. Instead, I will take a satirical route and compare Trivium's train-of-thought when they were recording "Ascendancy" and when they were recording "The Crusade".

This is what they were thinking when they were recording "Ascendancy":
"Hey guys, let's copy At The Gates' "Slaughter Of The Soul" album!"

Their thoughts when recording this album were probably along the lines of this:
"Hey guys, let's copy Metallica! They're the greatest band ever, and if we copy them, we'll be considered the greatest band ever!"

It is absolutely shameful that a band would give up originality in order to make more revenue. Completely, utterly shameful. On a lighter note, her are some interpretations to a few of the songs on this album.

haha everyone seems to hate trivium so much, mind you, i do understand why. the vocals on the first 2 albums didn't interest me, and therefore i don't listen to them. i, as much as i hate to admit on metalstorm, do like the new album. ok, yes trivium has more than just a tiny metallica influence, but it's actually a good listen, and to be honest, i love the vocals. you guys are to ruff on these guys. i wouldn't say they are one of the greatest bands of all time, because they most certainly are not, not even close, wouldn't even make my top 100, but i think the new album deserves at least a listen.
