Anubis Gate is a progressive power metal band from Denmark who has been active with some success for the last decade. Having managed to survive multiple lineup changes in recent years, they recently released Horizons, the next offering to add to an already impressive discography.

The band itself may have changed of late but the music remains true to the vibe their fans are used to. Powerful guitar riffs lead into memorable choruses dispersed over long and complex song structures. Some tracks are rather as expected while others are completely out there but awesome nonetheless. When it boils down to it, the song writing is somewhat pop oriented despite its complexity, as is the case for most of the northern European prog power sound (Think Norway's Pagan's Mind).

Following up their excellent self-titled uh... fifth album, most fans knew that this album was going to be a disappointment. Suffering the loss of a founding guitarist and drummer, the odds were on a steaming pile of Danish doo-doo. Yet somehow, this album comes out like a delicious wienerbrød. Still one of the only bands that I can never seem to figure out when songs are going to end or begin, the structures are interesting enough to avoid boring us to death with ordinary melodic prog/power metal. If you want a band that knows how to write great catchy songs without all the plague of pompousness that most modern prog metal suffers from, you may enjoy this.

I too have high hopes...
----
First gig was Manowar (loincloths 'n' all), Bristol Colston Hall in March 1983, on the 'Hail to England' tour. Tickets were £3.75, 300 in the audience, Mercyful Fate never showed, but my hearing still got seriously trashed..

Their last album was a straight 10 to me (and I give 10s extremely rarely), so I fear that my hopes are a bit too high.
But I think this album won't disappoint, because what I've heard so far, was quite good.

The self-titled was thoroughly enjoyable, so I'm keenly and eagerly anticipating this one.

My copy arrived the other day. If I had to choose two words to describe the level of craft and songwriting here, it would be "unfathomably perfect." Just... "mindbogglingly pristine."

And that's my short collection of words for an album/band which deserves many, many more.

I feel the same way, but I knew there was no way it would live up to that hype. Every track seems to have outstanding moments, but hasn't settled in as a whole just yet. "A Dream Within A Dream" is phenomenal, love the mystical interludes.

"Girlfriend metal"? o.O

Possibly. But if so, then it's some damn good "girlfriend metal" we're dealing with here.

Haven't heard too much of this album as I only recently discovered the band within the last week. I'm surprised I haven't heard more of their stuff earlier as I'm a big fan of Mercenary and Pagan's Mind prog/power metal combo.

I laughed at the "girlfriend metal" comment.

I think this material is a bit more "up beat" and harmonic in terms of the vocals which I can see would appeal to more female fans, but the music is still progressive metal enough for me with the riffs found throughout the album. Honestly, I'm surprised these guys don't have more fans. Finally, I'm impressed the singer can pull off his singing while hammering away at the bass. Talented musicians in this group.

Well, Anubis Gate is back. A Dream Within A Dream is one of the best songs they've done.

Was expecting something average but got surprised by the quality. Still have to give a few more listens but the first impressions were good, it's a really strong step into Anubis Gate's future.

Really good, but I prefered the last one.

Thus far, I agree with you. Perhaps after several more listens that opinion will change. The tracks don't quite grip compared to the previous release. Damn those chorus and guitars---aw well, let's see how this one continues to go.

These guys could use a new music video to promote the new album. I saw the trailer for their new album, but when I searched for more content from them on YouTube, I tend to only see what users put up and nothing from the band besides their older video from 2011, "Golden Days." No real live footage to help their exposure either. Oh well.

Got the CD yesterday (finally!) and I can say that it is quite good, but far away from their previous release, but I still need to listen to it more. At the moment I am between 8 and 9 with this album.

Retract that last statement. This release is superb. The last two releases are different in comparison but equally enjoyable. I find the self titled has a lot of excellent chorus driven tracks and guitar solos wheres this release is instrumentally intricate. On the surface (and upon initial listens) Horizons seems rather plain but there is so much going on that replay value is through the roof. To me, that is what makes a good album. Sure, one could listen to an album and say it is superior in every way then self it, never to be heard again. On the other hand, what draws us to listen to an album again and again is indeed the true accomplishment. Horizons does just that.

Slightly above Hemina's latest, but still not worth an 8. The album suffers from many of the flaws plaguing modern prog.

I quite like this album, very hypnotic and erm... dreamy atmosphere (similar to Haken's Visions) with some really amazing moments.
Just listen to "Erasure" alone 3am in the morning... very interesting experience.
