Behold, fellow black metallers, for huge Darkthrone vibes are upon us. This is about Dutch act Tarnkappe's debut album Tussen Hun En De Zon, which translates to "Between Them And The Sun". The material is not new, as the same tracks have already been released as a demo under the same name in 2013, now again as their debut album and on LP. So the music is not new, and at the same time it's not even original either. But there is something that makes the songs good, very good and, at times, simply great.
What you get here is your standard Norwegian influenced black metal with guitars, bass, drums and vocals. An exception is the last track "Wouddwalen" which also features synth sounds and gives an ambient feeling, yet not like in the early Burzum albums. The first song "To Wade In The Blood" directly starts of with a riff that could have also been featured in some of Gorgoroth's slower songs. The music in general is rather mid-paced with an uncomfortable (in a good way) and impulsive guitar work, hence the Darkthrone reference that is more suitable here than in most works of other descendants of the Norwegian elite band. At times fast passages with huge atmospheric leads break through, completing the overall picture of Tussen Hun En De Zon.
Vocals are in three different languages here, as each two songs are in German and English, the other ones Dutch. Though edited afterwards, the singing is a raw and guitar supportive tool that fits greatly to the music. As one can actually understand the words in the songs (given that you know the language used), I'd associate the vocals more with the Swedish scene. The bass and drums sound good with the guitars, the sound of the drums is very nice actually, raw and unedited yet still breaking through the mix at the frequencies it should.
If there is a song to point out I'd chose "Guister Mijn Geweten", which was actually the first track I had heard from them, and that decided for me that I wanted to review this album. The track has way more Burzum style in it but in a quality that comes closer to Varg Vikernes' masterpieces than most other bands do. Yet the track is rather an exception on Tussen Hun En De Zon, for the rest clearly leans towards the other two bands I already mentioned above. So besides Tarnkappe of course, I have mentioned three bands in this review. Now everyone can think to themselves if they like the music of one or more of these, and based on this evaluation they may check out Tussen Hun En De Zon. It's clearly worth it.
