Periphery is a name that, more than most prog bands, has the capacity to really split opinions. If you haven't previously been a fan, you can probably save your time and stop reading, as everything that may have put you off in the past is still here. As for the converted, how much you enjoy Hail Stan will very much depend on what parts of Periphery you like, as it's rather a 'kitchen sink' type of album.

That makes sense that it can be a turn off, but to play devil's advocate; I feel that they have fun with it too. They're creating great music but not being super serious all of the time.

I much prefer a band that doesn't take themselves too seriously to a bunch of tryhards.

I mean "tryhards" is a silly label since it can literally be used for any band that goes all out for a reaction. Cannibal Corpse or Death Metal bands in general were tryhards with all their album covers being gruesome. Black Metal bands can be tryhards with the ridiculous outfits, weird music videos, and going heavy on Satan worship like 200%. Bands also going too serious on naming albums too end up just being silly when it shouldn't be. I mean there are tons of examples. Just because you end up not liking something, doesn't mean they're trying way too hard at something. It may just be their sense of humor, one that isn't the same as yours.

For the record, I was agreeing with you. By tryhards I specifically meant bands who take themselves way too seriously.

I don't care if they fuck up the names if they continue to put out masterpieces like this album. Also, they are funny guys with good sense of humor

First listen was a mixed bag- the first 2 songs are great, I really liked Crush and the second halves of Garden In The Bones and Satellites. However, did not enjoy CHVRCH BURNER or It's Only Smiles at all, and wasn't particularly interested by Follow Your Ghosts or Sentient Glow. Hopefully those downer tracks will pick up for me on repeat listens, but did find it a bit of a drag at times, despite the number of great moments. Have a suspicion it'll end up below P3 for me, and definitely not close to P2.

Edit: Couple more listens down and I feel a bit more positive about the tracks I was initially critical of, particularly Sentient Glow, but they're still a bit below what I would expect for the band, and on an album with 9 tracks (with one admittedly super-long song), 3 slightly questionable tracks does slightly drag down my overall opinion, despite how excellent Reptile is.

Right. Apologies, sometimes it's hard to grasp tone or meaning with just text.

This album is a mess. They do sound like an amazing band, don't get me wrong. But there's too much going on musically while the vocals range from great to bitchy...

Album grew on me like crazy. Very varied listen that starts out absolutely ruthless with the first 3 tracks and then slowly introduces more sounds into the mix. Love it.

They're trying to be funny, but it comes off silly to me, since I don't like my metal funny.

I don't care if its funny or not but the music, lyrics and song titles should all compliment each other. I mean Steel Panther is awesome. It's just to me, silly titles for serious song just seems disjointed. And for me, it takes away from the songs as artistic works.

I should also clarify that I enjoy Periphery and I love hearing how the band evolves and develops from album to album.

I strongly agree. I don't think an artist being serious (i.e. not trying to be funny intentionally) is a try-hard, unless it's clearly over the top or pretentious, but even then, I prefer that than artists trying to be funny.

Yeah it's growing on me like I expected it to. Not been fully won over by the ones I was iffy about initially (although they're not as much of as a problem as they were during the first listens), but the top 5 songs (for me, Reptile, Blood Eagle, Garden in the Bones, Crush and Satellites (more the second half than the first of that one)) more than make up for it. I don't think it'll rival P2, but definitely more in the ballpark of P3 than I first expected

Not as many highlights as III or V, but "Reptile" is one of their best songs to date.
