Some people righteously claim that this is not a real Metallica release and thus it can't be viewed as such. I agree. Metallica decided to co-operate with Lou Reed in his interpretation of Alban Berg's opera based on Frank Wedekind's plays "Erdgeist" and "Die Büchse der Pandora". The history behind that opera is as complicated and dramatic as one can imagine, assuming what a dark story it tells.

Lulu brings back Metallica in a collaboration album with Lou Reed. A German visionary named Frank Wedekind wrote a collection of plays about a woman called Lulu who was both a muse and a mystery, the first form of woman. Most of the songs have death, sexuality, love and spite themes. Although it's not a Metallica album, the expectation was off the charts but the result is terrible.

The worst thing you can possibly do is treat this like a Metallica album. It is not. Lulu is a Lou Reed album that just so happens to feature the guys from Metallica as his backing band. Of course, Metallica still had to go and put their name on it, which recklessly raised people's expectations, and the heavy criticism weighed at this album is largely true no matter how you spin it. Nonetheless, while this was a disappointment, it is not totally devoid of merit, and more of an interesting experiment than a Son-of-St. Anger-sized failure.

For first: WTF is "lulu"???? seems like a catchy pop-music album name
Hope this is a unhappy joke made by metallica...

Album to be released in November. Lou Reed thinks that it will create a new planetary system.

I just love people whose ego is the size of a planetary system.

Not to judge the book by its covers, but "Lulu" sounds like Metallica finally came to terms with the fact that they got bored with metal.

What am I thinking is with the funny title already on the record I think they gonna have some fucking good surprises to blast it off. But what tripping me inside they dont come up with the crap like Morbid Angel's Illud Divinum Insanus which before releasing was a huge mock about hitting some powerful shit............ and....... here we are..... So little bit mixed feeling haunting me but still a great hope from Loutellica arena.:)

After sessions of hot sex with Lou Reed, the band has decided on what name to call out in bed: "Lulu". It's not "Louie Louie" so it's not metal, and it's not "Lou-Ray" so people think James once again had went back to country-rap-whatever he does.

Seriously, though, I expect this will not be at all something I want from Metallica. It's obviously not metal, and my highest hopes are if it is not, at least it's not total shit. FFS, though, doesn't this band hear of something like side projects? Why do they need to do every non-Metal thing in a band called Metallica with thrash history? ._.

Lulu is the kind of album title that even puts fanboys off. Except for the ones who gave St Anger a 10, those kind of fanboys will never understand.

It's silly for people to keep whining about Metallica releasing non metal albums. They're no longer pissed off kids writing angry music, they're middle aged mutli millionaire rock stars. They can do anything they want and make millions off of it, so why should they record a thrash album when they don't seem to want to?

I totally agree with that. Plus, I don't understand why everyone is so surprised at the album title 'Lulu'. There's actually a reason it's called 'Lulu', they didn't just make it up, it's all explained on their new home page http://www.loureedmetallica.com/

I dunno why everyone's complaining about the song titles and stuff, and then pinning it on Metallica! From what I understand, Lou Reed wrote the whole album with "significant arrangement contributions by Metallica", so it likely was Lou Reed who came up with the song titles and album cover idea and such like.

I must say the album cover is pretty good.

But to each and every one who argued about people being pissed off about Metallica not being metal, I still stand within my side project argument. That or they just change names or something. >.>

People still care for Metallica.

If anyone bothered to read the website, they're considering Metallica a "hard rock" band.

... Seriously, don't expect anything good to come from this. Metallica is on the money train now.

I don't think that's true, they already have all the money they want or need. And that's exactly why they allow themselves to get involved in musical projects their traditional fan-base might not appreciate ... they just don't need us any more. Although the 'Metallica family' probably is still very important to them, they can now explore new musical horizons without being hurt by the fact some fans will stop coming to their shows. There are enough people waiting in line.

On a side note, saying nothing good is to come from this album could, from the sectarian view of an elitist metal fanatic, be true... unfortunately. But my horizons are a little broader so I might be lucky enough to appreciate the collaboration of two groups of legendary artists.

Or both, just because James "today voice" sucks! And Lars drums are boring in some decent songs!

Racionally speaking I think this one is going to suck too, but I don't think we have to say: It's suck, this isn't metal. It will not be, probably, anything close to metal, they know it and this is just a thing Metallica wanted to try, colaborating with another musician, not another Metallica album (at least I hope).
Ok, not racionally speaking now, why the hell do they have to this sucky new album with this guy but won't try anything with Mustaine and Ellefson? Really can't understand...

Make an album with Mustaine and Ellefson? why? Megadeth are working on their own album. And they are not the best of friends.

Why are they releasing this under the Metallica name? This is what i don't get. The songs will be mostly written by Reed (with significant contribution from Metallica - LOL).

Apparently some of the songs on this album (like the last two) are set to be over 12 minutes long, and Junior Dad is 19 minutes long. unfortunately, the last time they did something of quality at comparable length, is the title track of "...And Justice for All"...
