The defendant rose; his face a blank expression. His lawyer had a concerned look about him. The whole courtroom seemed to be frozen in time. The judge took no joy in delivering the verdict. A weak voice to match his scrawny body slowly spelling it out: "The defendant has been found guilty of musical oversight." You get the picture; I miss the boat on this release. I got so used to hear Paradise Lost experiment with their sound in the early nineties I almost forgot how awesome their song writing can be when applied to good old heavier Gothic Metal era Draconian Times. So my self-inflicted sentencing is to listen to their latest offering until I weep. The only problem is that I keep weeping of joy and I cannot stop listening to this album. Tragic Idol blew my mind from the first note to the last. Whatever was lost about this heavenly band has been fully recovered.

Tragic Idol is Paradise Lost's 13th full-length release?yes you read right 13! This prolific band just keeps on getting better with every release. I had the pleasure of witnessing their live performance at this years Soundwave Festival, they were fantastic with ever song they had the power of an extremely young band but the musicianship of an extremely grown and mature band, they are one of the most under-rated bands in the metal scene, they deserve to be as big as Metallica. The reason why I believe they have stayed so consistently great, is due to the fact their line-up has basically never changed, apart from the drummer who has changed several times, this allows them to have such a musical connection that can progress in such a way that a band with many line-up changes just can not. However this is not to say that a band without line-up changes will stay consistently good, there are a lot of examples that I could mention however I will not in this review.

Quote:
Ah, damn. It's getting worse and too predictable with every listen. "Faith" was brillant and varied, this one is becoming flat, the refrains sound so samey... 6,5/10.

For some reason I don't like it that much. Can't really point out why.

I think it's ace. To me it looks like The artist of 'The Desanctification' raped John Baizley and had really classy babies.

That's the thing... I makes me think of both artists but I do not see how he combined the styles in a good way.

As expected; solid album. With that being said, it loses momentum much too quickly for my liking. I loved the first two tracks, but after that then it became "same-ish".

You like the new Nile artwork so whatever you have to say on this one cannot be taken seriously

the artwork is infinitely superior to the new Nile one or for that matter any of Nile's artwork or any artwork done by the guy who did the new Nile

Well, I never said I thought the Nile one is a masterpiece. It was "just good" but sadly it gets dissapointing once you see all the bad stuff about it (specially the fucked up lights and copy-paste shit)... It gets most of my liking in a "it could have been great" level... With the Latest Paradise Lost, even from the beginnign I didn't like it. I still don't know why I don't dig the drawning that much. Like I said before, it's like a dude took great influences from the artist behind the latest Blut Aus Nord + Baizley stuff and was going to make something awesome yet something got lost in the translation.

Funnily enough the guy who did up the latest Nile cover also did Paradise Lost's In Requiem Just saying......

Don't know what's so funny about it, In Requiem's artwork is a tad better than the latest Nile imo. Not that much though.

If you were trying to make a point to Marcel's comment. Well, I dunno what it was since I doubt that Marcel liked that artwork as well.

same. I can't connect with any of the songs >.> I think they are trying to get back to their older sound, but that doesn't mean it's the guaranteed formula for success...

EDIT: it sounded a bit better today lol

I feel the exact opposite Ag Fox... all the songs are very good imo... very solid album... maybe not at first... but give it some time... I didn't quite enjoy "Crucify" the first time I listened to it... but now I love it.

This is a very good release their best since draconian times imo, but still it doesn't really hit me tell now, some moments seems to be forced, but its definitely a grower, its a 8.4 for me...for now

Having listened to this album over the last few days, I didn't really know how the album's two leading tracks, 'Crucify' and 'Honesty in Death', would match up to the rest of the album. As it stands, the album itself has a lot of variety, not necessarily in structure of musicianship, but the lyrics and tempo of each song. It's noticeable that the guitar work is a lot heavier than on past affairs (influenced by Greg's work on Vallenfyre, perhaps?), as well as the fact that Holmes' clean vocal range is so much better, even if there isn't really a great deal of harsh vocals on offer here. It may seem repetitive and sometimes even dreary to new fans of the band, but the doom metal approach on 'Tragic Idol' is in spades. I believe this to be one of the finest metal albums of 2012, but there's still a long way off yet.

I love Paradise Lost, they've been one of my all-time favorite bands ever since Draconian Times came out.. but they need to change how they write their songs. I just realized that they basically write songs exactly like Iron Maiden. They come up with a title, and they repeat that title 20 times throughout the song and throw a few other filler verses in there and call it a song.

Am I wrong?
