Waldwind - Blättertanz Download the full demo here www.waldwind.com www.myspace.com/waldwind Devoted to the beauty of nature, Waldwind deliver a demo of raw folk black metal that almost sounds ambient at times. And they use an interesting set of instruments to say the least. Most notably the trombone is an essential part of a great deal of these compositions, all the while there is just one guitar. This EP thrives on the alternation of raw black metal tunes (with acoustic elements) and melancholic interludes, fuelled by a mediocre production that gives the tracks - and especially the shrieks - enough edge not to sound like the symphonic band next door but truly unique and full of new elements. Too full, one could argue, as the tracks appear a little chaotic at times. But don't let that ruin your experiece. Turn off the lights, put on a candle and lose yourselves in these 26 minues of mysticism. by corrupt |
For Dying Souls - If This Is Forever... Download the full EP here So you like metalcore? Great! You'll love For Dying Souls. Oh... you don't like metalcore? Perhaps this Parisian quintet can show you the dark side. It's not necessarily my genre of choice but I have been thoroughly rocking out to this awesome EP. Here's a professional sounding band, polished and ready to go. The songwriting grooves and alternates with melody and aggression in all the right places. It's accessible, yes, let's be honest, but For Dying Souls are one of those solid bands who shows us that commercial potential and accessibility does not have to mean bad music. by Susan |
Orphan Hammer - Orphan Hammer http://www.myspace.com/orphanhammer Can't win 'em all I suppose. From one of the members of thinky-thrash metal band Sacred Ally comes Orphan Hammer. Now, as much as I hate to draw direct comparisons between the bands, I have to: this sounds like a bunch of reject back-tracks from Sacred Ally's Reality Hammer. True, it's not all bad, it's just aimless and forgettable. Proggish, instrumental riffing basically sums this up. There's some rough ideas here that could sound pretty wicked with a little work. Taken at face value, however, this is a boring EP. by Doc Godin |
Tunguska Mammoth - First Chapters http://www.myspace.com/TunguskaMammoth Out of the Canadian landscape comes Tunguska Mammoth, which judging by its name should be an explosion of some sort. If you think about an explosion, First Chapters would be like the exact moment before all is blown to smithereens. It is a good way to describe the sound of their music because it often withholds the aggression until the very last minute of detonation. They present us a robust stoner/sludge bang of riffs and suitable flashes of hardcore, especially in the moods expressed in the vocals, with no special tricks up their sleeves or forced shenanigans. Is it pure and simple in terms of its process and while some parts deliver echoes of something we might have heard before, this is, for the most part, a set of solid songs. The catchy and groovy melodies will make an impact but it might be lacking the desired lasting effect on the listener. by BloodTears |
Descend Into Despair - Vanity Devotion http://www.myspace.com/descendintodespair Get your hazmat suits ready, the pretention detectors are crackling. Descend Into Despair? That's the band's name. And, yep, that's a rose on the cover. And holy fucks, one of the songs is called "Drowning In My Own Ethereal Realm". This could be catastrophic. I'm getting nauseous. Someone get the EIC on the phone! But? There's no but, really. This is a mediocre EP. If you're desperate for some minor, annoying attacks on your serotonin from some overly-synthy funeral doom, pop a few Radaways, drink a Nuka Cola and proceed with caution. You're a masochist. Otherwise, hang back with me in Megaton and avoid all this nonsense. by wormdrink414 |
Darknote - Walk Into Your Nightmare Listen to the entire EP here Melodic death/thrash from Iceland. Why are we so fascinated by great music coming from small, seemingly isolated countries? The "fascination" factor is not necessary here; this music stands strongly on its own. Darknote couldn't have chosen a better band name, as these songs highlight what is wonderful about "dark" atmospheres. With that darkness, some songs have a very slight gothic vibe, while most others you can firmly feel the thrash and melodeath. Highly melodic, yet enveloped by skillfully harsh vocals and drumming, this band really shows their range. Let the excellent riffing blow your mind and expect to hear more Darknote in your future. by Susan |
