I was not sure whether to put this thread in the Melodic Metal or in the General Music thread. I decided to put it there since the band is on Metal Storm. Feel free to move it if need be.

I personally love that band and wanted to see what people thought of them. In my opinion, Steve Wilson is a genius. As of right now, I particularely love Shesmovedon, Lazarus and The Sound of Muzak.

Cant stop listening to Lazarus these days. Everything is perfect on this song: the vocals, the sound of piano etc. A perfect song that everyone should listen to at least once in life

From wikipedia:

The album includes collaborations with King Crimson's Adrian Belew (who plays guitar solos on tracks 1 and 4), and Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt (who adds vocal harmonies on tracks 1, 3 and 5, as well as the second guitar solo on track 5).

Yea I knew about Åkerfeldts contributions. Very good but its not exactly as obvious as say Lifesons solo on the new album, I wouldn't have known about Åkerfeldts contribution had I not been told.

@Twilight: thanks for that info, it's nice to know that Mikael Åkerfeldt appeared on Lazarus (although he just did some vocal harmonies )

^ the new album gets better with each listen, although i tend to skip the first 2 tracks. i like My Ashes, but it just doesn't go with the rest of the album, but the first song is just .. bleh. not good at all.

My Ashes is a good follow up to the first song...although, it doesn't flow into Anesthetize at all...although I'm still sold on the first two tracks coming together perfectly...

From what I made of it, he explains a lot of his issues in the first track and explains his reasoning on My Ashes...for example, lyrics like:

I'm stoned in the mall again
Terminally bored
Shuffling round the stores
And shoplifting is getting so last year's thing

X-box is a god to me
A finger on the switch
My mother is a bitch
My father gave up ever trying to talk to me

in Fear Of A Black Planet...

being explained with:

All the things that I needed
I wasted my chances
I have found myself wanting

When a mother and father
Gave me their problems
I accepted them all

Nothing ever expected
I was rejected
But I came back for more

in My Ashes...

to explain a great deal of the issues in the first track...

Meh, I actually don't like the new album much. My favorite is Lightbulb Sun, followed by In Absentia and The Sky Moves Sideways. Deadwing's a little bit boring, and the sound is pretty irritating after a while.

if you like Lightbulb Sun and TSMS how can you enjoy In Abesntia? i mean those 2 albums are nothing but brilliant, yet In Absentia is pretty uninspired. the second half of the album saves it from being crap, but still, their worst album imo.

I'd say Lightbulb Sun, definetely. It has a pretty light rock atmosphere, but the songs are actually rather melancholic. Stuff like Shesmovedon, The Rest Will Flow, Lightbulb Sun and How is Your Life Today are really some of the best PT ever made. It's my favorite album, at least. It's pretty simple and easy to get into, compared to some of the shadier old stuff.

The new stuff is more metal, and even easier. Deadwing's pretty rockin' and In Absentia, despite Damnated's opinion, is IMO a quite balanced album with a great sound. I personally think Stupid Dream's a fairly overrated album, I found it repetitive.

If I had to recommend you something in an order of preference, I'd go for Lightbulb Sun first, then Deadwing and In Absentia. They're easy and pretty good stuff. Signify has some catchy pieces, but it's not quite as clear an album as the others. Avoid Stupid Dream for now, and go for The Sky Moves Sideways if you want a challenging but satisfying experience. (And if it's within the scope of your query, being 1995 instead of after it.) All in all, I'd steer clear of Stupid Dream and Fear of a Blank Planet until you're more familiar with them, so as not to get the wrong image. The "new" PT sound is pretty much presented in LS, IA and DW.

"Fear Of A Blank Planet" is a really cool album but I think that "In Absentia" is their best album. "Deadwing" is also a very cool one.

it's rather dreamy, but not that focused as TSMS is. a bit uninspired, but still a good listen.

Metanoia is a pretty improvised mini album. They all sound a bit similar but mainly consist of the bass guitar, keyboards and drums playing very relaxing and dreamy music. It's a bit trippy, because it's constantly evolving but there are no big variations.
I don't think it's uninspired, but it's not music for everyone.
I think the closest reference is 'moonloop'.

Honestly, when Deadwing came out I thought it was their best... but then Fear of a blank planet came out and it just blew me away. Its a masterpiece and cannot be labeled with genres, it lies in a realm all its own. I first got into this band because of Opeth, and both bands have become some of my top 5 bands.

Deadwing! In Absentia! ^.^

*orgasm*

Porcupine Tree is, quite simply awesome. They're one of the best prog rock/prog metal bands of all time, and may just be better than fellow prog bands like Dream Theater and Opeth. (Although thats disputed) =D

I can't stop listening to "The sound of Muzak". How much I like that song and that album.

@Neccy60: I think that Porcupine Tree's style is quite different from DT or Opeth's. PT is more like prog rock, and the two other are more metal. The three of them are really cool though.
