Regardless of what Marcel and Little-Marcel say, this has to be checked out. Just so I stay up-to-date.

Slow melodic doom with a lot of acoustic guitar interludes and Gothic vocals.

You don't have to be a fan of doom to like Swallow the Sun. Basically if you like any kind of melodic metal with a somber atmosphere, you'll probably enjoy their sound.
Doom elitists deny their right to the doom metal tag, but they are a doom metal band. Just... very watered down and accessible. I still personally enjoy their style but like I said, you don't have to be a fan of doom to like them.

I have given doom a thorough chance, but I find it quite tedious and just when you think it's going to intensify, or pick up the tempo, it just keeps plodding along as it has done for the previous hour.
I'm reconciled to the fact that this is probably as close to liking any type of "doom" as it's going to get for me.

No I/we don''t deny them the doom metal tag, we just say it''s extremely watered down and accessible doom for the masses which is marketed almost like being a boy band

Well, if you want some more intensity and change of tempos, stuff like Death/doom would be something you might like!
I don't want to go too offtopic but I'll give you some links of some extreme doom threads where you can ask around and some people (myself included) could help you!

Do you know Katatonia?
Early Katatonia is my absolute favourite doom metal band, they are relatively accessible, I'd say (they have lots of pretty melodies and I find them to be way more uplifitng than depressing) and do have tempo shifts and stuff like it.
Katatonia - In Silence Enshrined
Yeah, this is pretty offtopic though.

Not a big fan of doom, but I don't mind this.
My sentiments exactly. I didn't exactly recall enjoying their last album when it came out, but this isn't half bad. I was pleasantly surprised, because doom metal bores me 90% of the time.
I hereby dub this album recommend-worthy.

My god does this album take a long time to get through. :|
Every song leaves you feeling like something more is going to happen, but it never does. They spend so much time building up to something epic only to fall flat on their face. This is a major disappointment for me as I was at least expecting something along the same lines of what they've always done, and what they've always done is capitalize on their ability to build their riffs into something majestic and sorrowful. This time around it just seems like they forgot the stories need a middle and an end.

Yea I sortof felt the same way.. whenever the distortion kicks-in its never enough and leaves you discontent, especially in comparison to their old stuff... but the one thing i do enjoy is that the slower songs are really good for what they are. Super mellow, relaxing and catchy, almost Suomi-like which is nice occasionally to take a break from the endless barrage of Metal throughout the day, though I wouldnt say a solid release overall.

Not as good as their previous new moon but still it is very strong record.the emotions and vocals are a bit different from their other releases but i dont find the heaviness i really liked in tracks like losing the sunset or evael witch i i think their best work form the ep palague of butterflies
the highlights are the cut is the deepest and the title track

Swallow the Sun's discography has now become somewhat of a roller coaster to me, with the peaks being their debut and 2010's New Moon. I was really hoping for the trend to change but Emerald Forest and the Blackbird marks a huge plunge in quality and the result is the biggest disappointment of the year.
Right from the beginning it is evident that there is a change in direction and I am not a fan of it. The second track has to be one of the worst songs by the band and while listening to it I was silently praying that the album was just off to a bad start. Unfortunately I was wrong. I don't have anything against the clean vocals per se but there is way to much focus on them throughout the album. And don't get me started on the spoken passages which adds nothing what so ever.
Overall the album feels cluttered with no sense of direction or memorability. It is far too drawn out and a sense of boredom quickly established itself. While the majority of the tracks felt dull there were a few exceptions. The Horror songs have always been a highlight and part IV is the best of the album. That ain't saying much however since it pales in comparison to the previous parts.
Swallow the Sun can do so much better than this and it is so frustrating to see this decline in quality.

Hmmm... I don't know. I'm not sure if I would be able to pull it off. Not to mention all the hate I would get from all the fanboys.
I will think about it. Never say never, to quote the one and only Justin Bieber.

I think the mini-review of a comment you posted indicates you have the ability to go a little more in-depth with this.
And don't worry about fanboys... sometimes it's fun to see how easy it is to make their blood boil over a simple difference in opinion.
