I've heard all this band's albums, and they didn't really do it for me. It came across as an overuse of blast beats / drum fills, and the vocals had no variation, and the solos all seem to have the same feel. Granted, I loved 'Cast Down the Heretic' and that album is pretty bloody good, but overall Nile don't seem to do anything very special. Maybe I need to give them more of a listen? But after playing through their material once I hardly find any motivation to give them a second chance.

Oh yeah, give them another listen. Just give them more time, that's how it was for me. It was rewarding, to say the least.....

One of my fav albums is "Saurian Meditation" an album which was released by a side project featuring Karl Sanders. An album plenty with acoustic parts, was released before "Annihilation of The Wicked" and with it Nile has inspired "Dusk Falls Upon the Temple of the Serpent on the Mount of Sunrise".It's simply a masterpiece

And if not, another listen. And another.

Shove it down your throat, because you WILL like them.

Indeed, that album is really great. It really shows Karl's musical talents outside of his amazing guitar playing. I really enjoy that album, it takes me out of my house and to the eternal oceans of sands to Egypt.

Well I know not everyone can be as technically dazzling as Carpathian Forest or as diverse and fresh as Dark Funeral or as solid and consisent as Satyricon but I do suggest you try a little harder than one listen, since that won't do it for me, for any band.

One thing though, the overused blastbeats comment is sort of hypocritical coming from a fan of The Berzerker. That's just me though.

My favorite's of Nile would be Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka and Annihlation of the Wicked.

Funny how i absolutely dislike "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka" but adore "Annihlation of the Wicked"! I got "Sacrifice Unto Sebek"'s music video and what i thought was the best drummer disappointed me! He seems to be using some sort of special bass pedals to acheive his amaizing double bass speed. Anyway Nile is one of the few DM bands i lke!

Dissapointed? By Sacrifice Unto Sebek? That's an amazing song, great riffs and drumming. I don't think George uses special pedals. Try this and tell me what you think-

No, i love the song! I was dissapointed wit the fact that he "cheats" by using those special pedals. I have nothing to back up my alligations though... Can we get some expert drummer's opinion on the harware he uses? Are they really just your average pedals?

P.S. I'll check the link out now

I am pretty sure Kollias is legit. He's a fucking madman that's for sure. Anyway, why don't you like 'Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka?' I love that it pulls it's name from Lovecraft, not to mention the music is as raw as can get and Nile's trademark musicianship is still present.

Anyway, why don't you like 'Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka?'

Take "Pestilence and Iniquity" for example: it sounds like George is hitting the snare drum at random intervals, you know, off the top of his head! Just my opinion. Compare that to "Sacrifice unto Sebek" and you'll see that that the latter has perfectly technical beats!

Well, Pete Hammoura was the drummer for Nile back then, not George Kollias. Anyways, I know that Nile is anything but just plain random.

Almost all death metal drummers cheat in some way though. Shit, most of them use triggers.

amen to that brother!!! sadly I can even stand triggering, but when a drummer plays gravity blasts, now that's depressing. I remember the old days when pete sandoval played fucking fast with one hand; then Kataklysm arrived doing gravity blasts? the worst thing is that people actually thinks he plays that fast and they don't realize he's actually cheating.

So are you guys saying that George Kollias "cheats" his drumming? If so, how so, and some proof please.

When you mentioned Kataklysm, I'm assuming you're talking about the Serenity in Fire album? Their usual drummer, Max Duhamel, wasn't on that one. They hired some other dude to fill in and he cheated hardcore.

@C-Dub: No, I don't consider George a cheater. He just uses triggers, like I mentioned. A lot of metal drummers use triggers nowadays.

Speaking of Kollias, he's supposed to be filling in for 1349 on their upcoming UK tour because Frost will be busy with Satyricon duties. I'll be seeing him again it looks like....

yeah well...I was going to say something like that. There are many drummers out there using gravity blasts in many songs and people seem to like their stuff...for example the dude in Nile, the other dude in Disgorge (US), Cryptopsy, Deeds Of Flesh, Devourment, Malignacy, Beheaded and lots more...

I do not like Nile particularly, but I think their drummer and their music has quality...if I like it or not it's my stupidity or my cleverness...who knows?

I stated my opinion very cleary bunny, I've only listened to them once and It didn't do much for me, no need to make it personal.

There is no cheating in drums. I had the same argument in a drumming forum not so long ago. If you can get faster quicker using an alternative method rather than the traditional is is not named cheating just an alteration it may not sound the same but it is not named cheating. For the record Kollias is fully legitimate with his drumming. Hail George!!

And for anyone that cant get into Nile Listen to Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka that album took me a couple of days to get into it but now it is definatly one of my prefered CD's in my collection, the best of Niles IMO. Awesome band Nile are!!
