I was not sure whether to put this thread in the Melodic Metal or in the General Music thread. I decided to put it there since the band is on Metal Storm. Feel free to move it if need be.

I personally love that band and wanted to see what people thought of them. In my opinion, Steve Wilson is a genius. As of right now, I particularely love Shesmovedon, Lazarus and The Sound of Muzak.

Its funny to think in a way I went backwards. I heard about Porcupine Tree through Opeth and not the other way around.

I didn't start listening to it though until my old drum instructor played Sound of Muzak on his kit while we listened to it softly. It was amazing! He played that song for his final music exam too I think.

The new album was pretty good, but didn't seem too special. I should get more CDs from them!

Definitely an interesting band, with a fascinating transformation from pyschedelic rock to heavier, metal-oriented riffs. I quite enjoy their music, and would love to hear them live.

I also heard about Porcupine Tree through Opeth.

I think should explore Porcupine Tree, they have an extensive catalog filled with masterpieces. And if they are playing in your country, make sure you go see them, just to have a taste of their excellent musicianship.

They're so good live...they're hypnotic really...their bassist is always smiling and stuff and is just in such a good mood...he's probably on drugs or something...he's really in his own world...Wilson was starting a conversation with everyone in the few front rows...it was a really good time...

I saw them live recently so I second that. I spent most of the time looking at Colin (the bassist) lol
They all look like their having a good time and that makes the audience enjoy the concert even more I think. One of the best shows I've seen, their light/screen work is brilliant too, it takes the show to a whole new level.

Did anyone manage to get their hands on Insurgentes ? i'm listening to it now for the 2nd time, and it is truly amazing, lot of electronic and shoegazy elements, but that doesn't say anything really. imagine a mixture of basically all of his projects, including Bass Comunnion. the music differs from song to song. and it all sounds good.
what i noticed however, is that the album is like a soundtrack. it's better to listen to it in one sit. it may be hard, after all it's 80 minutes, but otherwise you will definitely miss something.

My friend got a special edition of steven wilsons solo project...forgot the name of it( i think Insurgente), but the latest album. it came with a MASSIVE book with lots of pictures of pure randomness. came with 3 cds, 2 music and one dvd.. the book idea is really cool, but holy fuck, wilson is such an ego-tistical dick! and another cool thing about the book is that he got it for 90 dollars including shipping/taxes and all. the next day, the EXACT same package is being sold for about 700 british pounds on ebay! what the fuck?!

first, i dont really understand his hatred towards ipods. i mean, its okay to hate them. but to hate them, then buy 1000000s of them(which is supporting them by buying their products) then damaging them...okay, you're sure doing good there buddy.

then, i dont understand his hatred towards internet. if it werent for the net, then people wont even know about porcupine tree and tons of other bands out there. plus, a lot of people download stuff, see if they liek it, then buy the album just for the cover art or whatever....

hes just a prick...

he's a bit of a maniac, i agree. he's idea behind unsporting digital music is that most of us (including me) don't ever get the chance to listen to the original record, because we can download mp3s and that's about it. and he's pissed because we're missing out on the sound but on the booklet and band imagery too.
by downloading we get a cheap imitation of the artistic vision of the band. and this is bad. so that is why he is destroying ipods. it's basically a symbol, just like church burning in the old days xD

But the stupid thing he doesnt understand is that if he destroys ipods, he has to buy them first. the more ipods he buys, the MORE ipods apple will create and send out to the world. its the same principle as buying a leather coat. the more you buy, the more animals are dying coz of you. if he REALLY hates ipods so much, then he should buy a MASSIVE chunk of ipod shares from apple, and then sink the entire cost, or burn the stock...or buy a few ipod stores, and then close down the store...

and the other thing is, okay, so you dont like the way the music is going now a days...thats great. however, instead of crying about it for 10 albums straight, just get over it and learn to live on with your life. like, i dont like bush, but that doesnt mean i'm trying to kill him. i dont think wilson appreciates being wrong, and therfore hes just being a maniac and trying to do as much as possible before he dies...idk. hes just fucked.

Steve Wilson is against iPods and the internet? I never would have expected that from him...I live out in the country so I can't buy Porcupine Tree albums...even in the city I couldn't find a lot of Porcupine Tree albums and when I did they cost 30-40 bucks...so there's no way I'm gonna buy a Porcupine Tree album even if I come across one because there is sooo much shit that is put into a physical release (which has already been stated) and because of that it costs a buttload of money...and to buy iPods and destroy them doesn't show much intellegence on his part..."that's ONE MORE iPOD out of commision!" and then Apple goes and makes a million more of them the next day in their production warehouse...

i cant find videos on youtube, but pickup any of porcupine tree/stevenwilsons dvds. in each dvd, he destroyes at least 30 of them. insurgents is a good one, as he is seen running over ipods with cars, stomping on them, kicking them, hammering them, shooting them, burning them with fire, chucking them across...

its almost a publicity stunt. 'oh yeah! guys look at me! i'm destroying an ipod! arent i cool?!'

I also think he's becoming quite a prick.
I think he is an amazingly talented musician, but he just shouldn't put his ideology in his music.
At least not -this- ideology.
Because it's because of the internet that he became so well-known.
And a very positive side for him is that most people who find out about his music will buy the album.
Because most people who do find out about PT and Steven Wilson are quite music admirers who are prepared to spend money on their favorite music.

At least I bought albums of PT, but I also put songs of PT on my iPod.
I think Steven Wilson should find other things to whine about.

actually, in most cases, its just a publicity stunt. in most cases, black metal bands, death metal bands, and other random metal bands dont really feel that way. they just write about that just to get more publicity for one way or another. sure, there are a few nut jobs here and there. but for the most part, its pretty much like the whole 'emo-craze'. in other words 'guys, look at me! i'm so deep and passionate about my stuff. pay me money so i can whine more about it'.

i cant remember who it was, but some band from the mid 80s. some death metal band. in their interview they were asked 'why write lyrics like these'? and their simple answer was to sound more intimidating, and to make it sound as brutal as possible. regardless of how much of a clash it is from their own personalities. even cannibal corpse did that in their recent interview in metal:headbangers journey.

like, okay, if wilson feels so strongly about ipods, then thats fine. but i find it under the same principle as donating to charity. if you're donating to charity, dont boast about how much you're donating. just say 'yeah, i'm supporting that charity'. he should do it in his own leaser time and stop trying to save the world, or destroy, in his terms.

yes, downloading takes away from the artist. however, a lot of the time, metal, rock, prog etc band members have other jobs to support themselves. they play music as a hobby, and if they get money out if it, its just a plus. however, if someone is against downloading, the internet, and this generation...then that person in a way, truly wishes for humanity to go back to the dark ages, and does not want people to evolve in any way.

however, it kind of is refreshing to see someone care so much. it kinda shows that romanticism is still alive. but he should get over it

Yes, I know it can be a publicity stunt, I wasn't saying that, I think people should be free to put incorporate their ideology in their music, and Wilson is free to do so if he wants, it's just music.

That's very true. And I support that. Artists SHOULD put their ideas in their music.
But Steven Wilson is saying that the internet and iPods suck, while at the same time most of his fans nowadays would never have known his music without the internet!
I also think he's a great musician, and I don't want to call him a hypocrite, but this attitude is just making me.

Black metal bands singing about Satan are just amusing, and they don't bash the way their fans got to know them.
If Steven Wilson hates the internet so much, take the PT site down! Don't put videos online. Give us the possibility to subscribe for a real-life mailing list.

But Steven Wilson is saying that the internet and iPods suck, while at the same time most of his fans nowadays would never have known his music without the internet!

Thats very true. Without the internet nowadays obscure artists would simply disappear without ever seeing the light of day. But I've never heard Steven Wilson say that he hates the internet. If you have I apologise and I'd like a link to an interview where he's said that. The only time I've heard him criticise the internet is during the promotion for FOABP where he specifically criticised illegal downloading and people's attention spans in relation to this. People would say they listened to one of his favourite artists but got bored after about a minute of one track.

I honestly think thats what he's getting at. He doesn't hate the internet, but people's use of the internet. You have to remember he grew up in the age before this. He grew up in the age where music seemed like something more than just the music itself. He wants to reflect this in his own music.

I've recently heard they've been writing a new PT album though. If they portray this theme in any of the music on the new album I may lose faith in SW though. Theres being critical of ones society and then theres just being plain bitter.

There will probably be themes of anti-technology in the new album because there was in FOABP...the whole thing about the XBox being a God to people, the TV always being on, angst towards authority figures due to always wanting to watch TV, play XBox or be on the computer and thinking that your parents hate you because they're making you do something to get away from being constantly entertained by technology all the time...also, there were lyrical themes of social isolation and people becoming afraid of human contact...probably on a song like "Let's Sleep Together"...

Seems like, apart from the DVD, we'll have a new PT album this year. It's definitely turning out to be a wonderful year in terms of new records from my favourite bands.

This also means that when they come here later this year, they'll be playing new songs.
