When it comes to progressive metal, one finds many die-hard fans and others who can't handle it at all. It might be that this genre has a larger ratio of musicians among the fans, those who comprehend the music are more likely to enjoy it with all its facets. Out of nothing now a new band emerged; Alkaloid from Germany greet us with their first ever release after their formation just a year ago. The musicians, however, are known to some people from their work with other big bands like Necrophagist, Obscura or Dark Fortress. I felt cringing inside the last time I tried this one and I couldn't remember why. Let's see now. On first impulse it feels like leftover Obscura material that they tried to make more interesting with nice clean passages. Or, for that matter, it feels like not much of anything at all. Is it the production? To me it seems a bit lifeless, stale. It doesn't quite kick me in the guts. The music is... often good. It seems to be dragging a lot; even if I got hooked, it was usually because of the guitar solo (maybe I'm listening to too much tech death?). It gets me expecting some epic counterpoint or breakdown, but none of these are really happening. Sometimes it succeeds in being chaotic, hoping to be interesting. Just like my review of it. I did have a phase where I lapped up tech-death, but ultimately ended up having the same problem with the 'emotionless wankery' feel of a lot of it as many other people seem to. However, I didn't really get that sense with this album all that much, particularly on (in my opinion) well-realised and moderately moving (for the style) songs like the opening duo. It does have its fair share of tech-death phases in its runtime, but there's a reasonable amount of it that I'd be more inclined to call prog-death rather than tech-death in terms of its more balanced and melodic and less virtuoso-driven feel. Not quite up with the likes of Omnivium or The Flesh Prevails when it comes to my personal top tech/prog-death releases from the decade so far, but it could conceivably be the highest such album on my list this year.

I like this kind of sterile, ADHD music. It's kind to my monkey brain. There's a lot of good shit on here, but I would give this full marks for the Dyson Sphere series alone, and the end of Funeral For A Continent is A+.

It's always the same dance with Tech Death or this sort of extreme prog metal. Come to think of it, it was probably even worse of a dance when this came out. It's either: "I hate this sterile soulless musical wankery" or "This kicks ass and is the most complexe shit I've heard! Where are the tabs, I need to play this." Look we get it, tech death isn't for everyone and it'll never be. Just like Jazz, country music & Ice Hockey. But for anyone who already enjoys tech/prog death that doesn't shy away from a good wank, this record is a no brainer. Amazing fucking stuff!
