Some people say this is the best Type O Negative album and well, personally I hope they are not right as it is at times very tedious and sometimes even monotonous. Sure, the incredible, odd mixture of genres is very original, but there comes a time when there is no way possible for anyone to hear that "sexy"(for the women of course) low voice again. Ayway, let's talk about the music now.

The Brooklyn-based band decided to issue a disclaimer for their second album stating:"Don't Mistake Lack of Talent for Genius.". Although it's a tongue in cheek statement, over the years it can be accurately applied to them. On Bloody Kisses is where the drab four flirted with 'genius'. Type O Negative's humble start was heavily rooted in their previous incarnation as hardcore thrash band Carnivore, not dissimilar to Stormtroopers Of Death with lyrics insisting it was Peter Steele's favorite avenue for venting rage. While Slow, Deep, and Hard still had some left over bile, its not as outlandish while still retaining the trademark morbid humor of Carnivore. After the canned live album Origin of the Feces the focus of the band seemingly shifted from pissing off as many people humanely possible to trying to get laid.

I missed the exact 30th anniversary by a couple of days because I'm still recovering from festival season, but Type O Negative is a band worth ignoring a little delay for. Bloody Kisses may not necessarily be my favorite Type O Negative album anymore, but it was the one I discovered the band through and for a very weird couple of weeks they were my favorite band. Bloody Kisses still suffers from the "way too long for its own good" syndrome that all of their albums have, but at least it has the courtesy of stacking its two greatest songs right after the classic mock intro, and after another instrumental interlude we get the tongue-in-cheek Carnivore-ish "Kill All The White People". It is quite frontloaded, but there's still plenty that's worthwhile in the second half as well.

I've always thought of Type O as a very inconsistent band.

Hmm, well I mean on this album alone, you get thrash, like Kill All The Whire People, then Doom/Gothic Ballads, like Bloody Kisses. It's wierd.

I'm going to listen to it more tomorrow.

I haven't listened to them in a long time now, but from what I can remember the majority (if not all) of their albums were spotty like that, not necessarily mixing different genres within each song but mixing songs of different genres into the album.

In any case, none of their stuff appeals to me. :/

I really like the Doom/Gothic stuff and sometimes the trashy stuff, but all piled together, it's just kind of a mess.

Strongly disagree, I always felt their combination of genres was very smooth in all their albums specially considering all of them were used to achieve the same goal: giving the finger to the "nice" and "emotional" gothic. Even in their fast tracks the gothic melodies were still around.

This is a historic album, a good album with many classics as "Christian Woman" "Black No. 1" and "Bloody Kisses". I rate for the overall impression that left me, with all its filler songs.

It's that time dead again. Overlooked master tune of atmosphere that set the style of tone for many to later copy.
An unbeatable piece of doom added with interludes of noise sample rust gold which Josh made gettng high in some cozy self-made studio home.

Must have got hold of the album some time in late 1994.
Back at the time, this album was pretty relevant.
I may thus go as far to call it a classic in Gothic Metal.
Yet, I never found it to be a particularly interesting album.
That said, Black No 1 is a hell of a song.

I wouldn't be who I am today if it wasn't for this album. I probably wouldn't have still listened to the metal if it wasn't for this album. Even though this isn't my favourite type o album, this is one of the most important and life-changing albums in my life.

My first time listening to this band. There are some very good moments with clever lyrics (Christian Woman, Black No. 1) and great doom riffing (Summer Breeze, title track), but there are also so many ridiculous-sounding instrumentals. It's such a weird mixed bag.

I'm normally put off by the dreary moaning of gothic metal but I have a bit of a soft spot for Type O Negative for some reason, so I enjoyed this one a lot!

8.6/10 for me - 'Christian Woman', 'Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)' and 'Bloody Kisses (A Death In The Family)' are the standout tracks. 'Kill All The White People' and 'Summer Breeze' are weaker than the rest.

I recently picked up the Suspended in Dusk version on vinyl and to be honest I think it's even better than the normal version.
Apparently it's Peter's original vision for the album. It cuts the short punky songs, changes the order around and adds Suspended in Dusk.
It's a doomy, gloomy masterpiece of gothic metal.

I never knew this existed. I'm not picking up the vinyl (yet) but it seems I can make a playlist from the "Top Shelf Edition" on Spotify with the same tracks. I never liked the punky stuff anyway so this will most likely be the superior version for me.
