Most albums of Porcupine Tree focus on being some kind of entity, with a theme, a concept, a red thread through the whole disc. Even if this album has a quite certain "style", I think of Stupid Dream as a collection of good songs more than an album. When a band writes an album with a concept, the album often becomes like a story were no chapters can be left out, and therefore all songs feel important. In other cases, like with 'Stupid Dream', there will almost unavoidably be fillers and tracks that you don't like as much as others - but also favourites. I normally don't find fillers on Porcupine Tree albums but here I can find at least three tracks that aren't interesting at all. Still the album also contains some of my favourite Porcupine Tree songs.

A very interesting transition in sound between this and 'Signify'. Here the songs are much more accessible, yet 'Signify' still had some coherent songs at least. It's just that 'Stupid Dream' is where the band realised they could use a lot more than just psychedelic passages lasting for nor more than a minute. Not that 'Signify' is a bad album, because it isn't-it's just that 'Stupid Dream' is where it all came together for the band, and they haven't looked back since. There is a lot to be discovered here; the instrumental and fast-paced 'tinto brass', the powerful opener 'Even Less' and even a song that could be regarded as one hell of a good single: 'Piano Lessons'. With the exception of the title track (why it is only half a minute long I will never know), this album is pretty damn good.

There isn't enough variation on Stupid Dream for my tastes. By the time Tinto Brass' relatively fast drums come in, this album has already become somewhat boring with one mid-tempo song after another. Not a bad album this, but not great either.

I wonder which 'Norfolk beach' he's referring to in the first line of 'Even Less', I may well live near it!
