The most abused word in metal?
It's probably been said before, so excuse me if I've resurrected the body of a beaten horse.
Something that's irked me for quite a while now has been the use of the word "Progressive". It isn't exactly the word that bothers me, instead it is the way that it's often use that gives me a sinking feeling.
Progressive - adj, making progress toward better conditions; employing or advocating more enlightened or liberal ideas, new or experimental methods.
Certainly, there have been many bands in metal that have earned the title of a truly progressive band. I don't want to mention names because I'd like to keep the discussion away from squabbling over band genres. But seriously, does anyone else feel we use the word progressive too often? It seems all a band needs to do these days to have 'Prog' put in front of their main genre is add some middle eastern element or set of obscure South American instruments played only by a single tribe in the deepest part of the amazon. It doesn't seem to matter if another band has already done it or not. Once a single band does something progressive, is every band that follows suit also progressive? Or just a bunch of copy cats.

Written by M C Vice on 03.10.2011 at 11:37 blitzkrieg is a german word and it means blitz war or fast war.Its a military term from a WWII but today many bands that want to be br00tal use the word to show how they are badass .Also a lot of fanboys and military freaks tend to easily get into the bands that use the word blitzkrieg.

Totally agree with you, everyone uses the metal horns now. Its lost its value. Apart from that I guess Experimental and Avant garde are over used. Instead we should use words like fo shiz and shizzle a lot more

Gauging from the response to Lulu, I'd say the soon to be most overused word is "Metallica". ...as in "That is such a piece of metallica" or "Kiss my metallica" and maybe "take out the metallica, or you're not getting any supper".

Lol, i have to agree with the devil horns gimmick which has already been suggested. Most people don't even know where it originates, and ever worse some people haven't even heard of the man who made it famous in the first place. What annoys me the most is not so much over-use, but miss-use or abuse of a word which has also been mentioned in here one or twice... words such as "Progressive" or "Avantgarde" are commonly miss-used or used to describe something ambiguous.

I'm not very keen on the use of the word ''evolve'' and it has become way too overused in metal. For example we have a band of let's say 6 musicians, 3 of them are main composers, songwriters, etc. One of them leaves the band and from this point on, it's clear that the music won't be the same. It just can't be, because one of the main compound of the music making process is missing. It's like making a tomato soup of of tomatoes, onions and water. If you loose onions, it won't taste as good. So the band cleary heads into different dirrection and some like it and some don't. And those who like it will probably oppose to those who don't, that they just don't get it and the band has ''evolved'' and all bands must be ''evolving'' all the time etc etc.... It's overused in these kind of situations and I'm quite fed up with all the ''excuses'' using this word (and the context of using it), because it doesn't hold any water.
