After two demos and Kingdom Of Madness in 1996, the German band Edguy is back with their second full-length release Vain Glory Opera. Written as a "metal opera" by rising power metal genius Tobias Sammet, this album should mark the carrier of young band Edguy. As Dominik Storch left the band after 'Kingdom Of Madness', the band welcomes a new drummer, adding Felix Bohnke to the current line-up. However, as written in the booklet of Vain Glory Opera, all drums on this album are played by Frank Lindenthal. On this 1998's record, Sammet is still handling bass guitar and keyboard parts while singing, the other members of Edguy remain Jens Ludwig and Dirk Sauer both playing guitars.

Not that promising of a start with Until We Rise Again and How Many Miles; just average songs with nothing much of interest to them. With the great Scarlet Rose the album gets on the right track and the three following tracks -- Out Of Control, Vain Glory Opera and Fairytale -- are great as well. I used to consider this the best Edguy album for a long time, maybe I still do, even if the whole album isn't super strong an ensemble, rather the strong individual tracks stand out here.

So much better than I remembered. This is a strong power metal record through and through. Vain Glory Opera (the song) is a bonafide PM classic and my local ice hockey team enters the ice to that song, to give you some useless trivia. I love the cover of Ultravox Hymn, it fits so well here and if you would be unaware of the original you would probably think it's their own song. Hansi Kursch does some guest vocals on a couple of tracks, good call Edguy.

Not a fan of this band at all, quite disappointed by most of their discography, but I like this one. It has some fine songs as: "Fairytale", "Out Of Control" (Hansi rules!) and "How Many Miles".
