Probably my favorite band of all time, and I think they need a thread. I saw them live for the first time and they were amazing. They definatly have a style of their own that is hard to compare to. What does everyone else think about these guys, discuss your thoughts.

I just don't "get" this album...

Most likely, if you think this is a modern pop album. I hated Crack the Skye and I'm glad they trimmed their progressive influence down for this. It's still one of their weakest overall, but at least they're back to playing a sludgy stoner kind of album.

Mastodon hasn't really been sludge since Call of the Mastodon; Remission to a lesser extent. The Hunter is extremely poppy sounding hard rock. I, on the other hand, am quite sad they moved away from their prog sound, but to each his own.

Poppy sounding hard rock? I'm not going to flame you or anything but I am curious as to how you can make that kind of statement.

Sounds like you just listened to Curl Of The Burl and then checked out some other songs over the top.

Saw them a week or so ago here in Montreal with Opeth on the Heritage Tour. I was expecting most people in the crowd to be Mastodon fans and, while they did get a great response, the night (and the bulk of the fans) belonged to Opeth. Since then, most of what I have been listening to is from those bands.

While I can completely agree they are not as heavy, I am not seeing "poppy sounding hard rock".
They're obviously a band that experiments with their sound, which I greatly enjoy with a band. Bands get boring when they do the same thing over and over.

That's why Mastodon is one hell of a band. None of their albums sound exactly the same, some elements are present from album to album, but every new direction they take adds a lot to their repertoire. At least, that's what I think and feel of them.

Mastodon definitely went a tad bit away from there prog sound with the hunter, but I wouldn't say they are poppy sounding hard rock. They just decided to "push the envelope" a bit further with the hunter

Exactly. I dunno what drugs you'd have to be taking in order to classify the material on "The Hunter" as "Poppy sounding hard rock".

Great band. It's a shame they've developed a reputation for putting on a live show devoid of stage presence, energy and crowd interaction - all of which was sadly true for when I saw my favourite band at the time

I like some of their heavier songs from their first couple of albums, but they also write some really weird ones that give me a bit of a headache. And I think they have like a 20 minute song where half of it is just silence. I hate when bands do that! Oh well, the guy has great vocals and the drummer rocks the kit on every track!

Agree that Brann Dailor rocks the kit. He's very busy with his hands but in later releases has been developing some more laid back grooves that sound good too. He's got a distinctive style to his drumming and it's good to be a bit different from the pack. I reckon he's got a really good voice as well when he does lead vocals. I hope he does some more of that on the next Mastodon album.

Which vocalist do you mean? The bass player and guitarist share the vocals and the drummer sings on some songs as well (a very unique aspect of the band imo!)

I don't actually know, for all I know it could be all of them! I just remember listening to some of their songs and thinking to myself how annoying the vocals can be, especially the album with the white whale on the front. It's just the sort of higher pitched groaning, I don't even know how to describe it.

That's probably Brent Hinds, the guitarist, you're talking about. He has a whiny kind of voice. If you listen to Leviathan you can hear the difference between Troy's voice on Blood And Thunder and Brent's on Naked Burn.

Not as unique as it seems. Kiss in their heydays had all four bandmembers doing vocals.

If you contemplate metal bands only, it's not really that common. Maybe rare is the word, not unique.

Well not unique in the sense of them being the ONLY band that has 3 or 4 members singing. But as Unhealer said, you have to admit it is rare in metal to see that many people sharing vocals, especially the drummer! The only other band that I can remember seeing a drummer do vocals in is Bloodshot Dawn. But I reckon you'll be able to name 10 more off the top of you head
