As much as I dislike Opeth and the culture that surrounds them, I would rather have them win the swedish death metal spot than bloody In Flames
Opeth were nominated in the general "Metal Category" not the "Death Metal Category", where they don't even belong in the first place.
I'm just speaking generally. I didnt bothering reading up who the nominations were

I love it how the most sophisticated metal (progressive) is in the same category as the least sophisticated (nu)

These awards are terrible, just like most award things like this. So pathetic. Let's look at them again.
Hard-Rock Category: Bullet - Bite The Bullet
-no comment
Death Metal Category: In Flames - A Sense Of Purpose
-IN FLAMES IS NOT DEATH METAL ANYMORE! Geez, whoever even nominated this band in the death metal section probably has no clue about music.
Glam/Sleazy Category: Gemini Five - Sex Drugs Anarchy
-no comment, other than the album title sucks.
Heavy/Power Metal Category: Sabaton - The Art Of War
-no comment
Punk/Hardcore Category: Kid Down - I Want My Girlfriend Rich
-I couldn't care less if my girlfriend was rich (I don't have one, by the way).
Metal Category (Thrash, Black, Doom etc.): The Haunted - Versus
-Meh, I've heard one of their songs.
Alternative Metal Category (Modern, Nu, Progressive etc.): Evergrey - Torn
-PROGRESSIVE METAL IS NOT ALTERNATIVE METAL! Evergrey is a great band and shouldn't be compared to alternative metal and nu metal. As I said earlier, whoever was in charge of these awards probably has a limited amount of musical knowledge.
Best Newcomers Category: Dead By April
-Meh, they probably will be split up by April.
Best Video/Director Category: In Flames/Patric Ullaeus - Alias
-In Flames again? What the heck? The Swedish awards are basically spoiling this band.
Best Live Act Category: Sonic Syndicate
-no comment
Best International Album: Metallica - Death Magnetic
-Okay...
Seriously, In Flames racked up two of those awards. That's only because of their popularity and the people's bias towards popular bands. I hate awards things like this. The only bands that these awards pay attention to are [just some of] the popular bands andno matter what, there are going to be people who disagree, including me. These awards are definitely always made in vain. Awards like this are rarely worth any crap.

I just love all those comments going on about it's just the popular bands winning here... mmmm... looks familiar to me, where have I seen popular bands rake in the awards as well? oh yeah... HERE at our yearly MS Awards.

I do so love the metal nerdrage on any topic involving an institution outside of metal that passes any form of judgment on metal or metal acts, from VH-1 or the Rock Hall of Fame award shows such as this.
further i consider this doubly hilarious because metalheads fail to see the irony in that we all love our precious scenes and desperately want them to remain isolated from popular/mainstream culture - and yet y'all get your knickers in a twist whenever the mainstream culture doesn't pick the appropriate band.
be fucking glad no cool bands were harmed in the making of the award show, ffs.

I thought this to be "an institution inside metal", like our beloved FMA and whatnot.
I agree how raging responses are hilarious, then again I can't be bothered to give a shit about these kind of things.

I wouldn't call this "an institution inside metal" cause it's only "The second annual Swedish Metal Awards 2008" Just because something is Scandinavian or Finnish does not make it an institution inside metal for me.

Ok, I don't have a clear idea what it means or how you or BitterCOLD define being "inside/outside metal" (please elaborate?).
No idea concerning the Swedes, but Finnish Metal Awards is organized by various medias or groups focusing on metal solely, the nominees voted by presumed metal listeners. Of course it has nothing to do with being Scandinavian or Finnish.

just because it has "metal" in the title doesn't really mean too much. perhaps it is, but clearly based upon the torch and pitchfork wielding mob on this thread, they are not particularly in touch with the tastes of the metal community.
meh. less serious debate, i want to see more inflammatory rhetoric!

Opeth?
Draconian?
Thank God no Draconian, that band is average at best (imo of course). At least Johan Ericson's Doom: VS solo project is vastly superior to it.

Yeah i guess it is what you are looking for. I found that album more touching than their previous ones.. despite a lot of tracks being 'average' or goth it was still stellar melodies and what i like in doom music.. even though in appearance it doesn't meet doom qualifications .. lol
Marcel has good taste
why is this band so popular in Israel anyway?
