Impressive but conformist

Besides having a name that makes me think of suppositories, Anaal Nathrakh is notable for being one of the relatively few British black metal bands to generally receive respect from the hermetic scene they cater to. After listening to Hell Is Empty And All The Devils Are Here it is easy to see why this is. High on both black metal 'necrosity' and grindcore insanity, the Brits commit to tape music that is as interesting in terms of arrangement and songwriting as it is brutal.

Just getting into these, this sounds to be quite a good album. Is it their best though?

Eschaton is better, imo

For some reason this album seems to be tremendously popular among AN fans. For me however this is the AN album I enjoy the least. I personally would recommend their latest offering "In the Constellation of the Black Widow" over this anytime. And "The Codex Necro" of course.

I wasn't impressed with this at first, but it quickly grew on me. Unlike the riff driven albums, The Codex Necro and Eschaton, the vocals here are the highlight, ranging from clean singing to high pitched screams to low grunts to awesome Attila-like sounds, but I didn't notice until recently how repetitive the song structures are.

Genetic Noose is one of the most brutal songs I've ever heard.

I find it extremely difficult for this band to reach the "10" for me. they lack some important things. on the other hand, they are great on what they do and very enjoyable. this is their best album...

This seems to be one of AN's weaker albums for me. The voyages into melodic territory and instant use of more clean vocals are even more apparent on here than on 'Eschaton', and although this doesn't quite fit in with the blastbeats and heavy Black metal-esque guitar work, it still serves as a vitally important presence. Not their best, as every song seems to be either too short or too long for its own good, but the riffs and excessive lyrics more than make up for it.

Enjoyable stuff, I liked many things on this, disliked the vocals though while being a fan of Burzum's Ashes vocals for example. I found interesting the more groovy tracks in here like #5,#6 and #8.
