It's always a helpful thing when the cover art for an album does a good job matching the music underneath it. A metal newbie scrolling through a stack of metal discs in his local record shop for the first time could conceivably look at, say, Burzum's first album and just know that the music resting under the dark, foggy album art will be the foggy and dark product of an up-and-coming wannabe fascist, fuckwitted "racialist" youth, and purchase the annoyingly brilliant thing promptly. A good enough sort of deal, if you ask me. Then say that that same metal newbie scrolls past this album here after that. He could probably just tell that the music, like the dirty-ass clowns on its cover, will be disturbing and awesome.

And waddayano. It is disturbing. And awesome.

Being that Pigs is the side-project of the guitarist from the noise rock group Unsane, it makes sense then that this thing sounds quite a bit like an Unsane record. It's noisy, dirty, ugly, sludgey, and will pummel you back into the dust the Quran teaches us we all originally were.

Mean that in the best way possible. Shit will get wrecked to shit when you put this album on here.

?Or, at least, for the first few tracks you spin, it will.

Biggest problem here is ultimately the lack of variation. Not stylistic variation--seeing as the Pigs style is the tits, there would be no point in wanting any of that--it's just the songs here all end up sounding more or less the same. Yeah, they sound rotten and excellent, but after 10-15 minutes of so much similar-ness, the constant pounding into dust gets a little annoying. Listen to this all the way through and you shouldn't be surprised if you wake up from a daze with a suicide note and a broom in your fists.

But that's the biggest gripe I have with this. It's a big one, yeah, but it just shows Pigs have their shit down to a science. If you enjoy dirty sludged-out noisy rock, you'll dig this (or, at least, some of it). End of story.

I don't see how that can be deduced from the album cover.

I youtubed this and found it pretty damn enjoyable. Plus, the album cover is definitely a shoe-in for Cover of the Year.
