Testament - Bassist Splits With Band, Replacement Announced

Testament announced on their official website and Facebook page that Greg Christian, the band's original and longtime bassist, has departed after a nearly-nine-year second term with them. The band's statement fortunately indicates that the split is mutual, and also saves us all the anticipation of waiting for the replacement. None other than Steve DiGiorgio has stepped in to fill Christian's shoes.

DiGiorgio, the well-traveled metal veteran known for his fretless bass wizardry, is an alumnus not only of Testament (appearing on The Gathering and the compilation First Strike Still Deadly), but of Death, Iced Earth, Charred Walls Of The Damned, and numerous other projects. He will be joining Testament on their upcoming shows, as well as in the studio to record the successor to 2012's much-lauded Dark Roots Of Earth.

The full statement can be viewed here.

Excellent news! I've heard rumors of Hoglan considering joining full time as well, he and Steve make one of the most potent rhythm sections in metal.

Wow... I'm not quite happy for Greg leaving, although he's never been significant part in the sound, he was part of he band since the early days. With this lineup though, next album should be fuckin stunning.

that would be amazing
also it"d be nice if they could get the sound closer to The Gathering, their later albums are too clean for my taste

Haha, that's like saying "compose your own Metal album and upload it here, instead of writing a review of an album".

About time then, considering their last stunning album stems from 1987

Pretty sad that Greg Christian has left but couldn't be happier with the replacement! Steve DiGiorgio is one of my favourite bassists of all time and so stoked to have him back on board, especially with Gene Hoglan behind the kit aswell. As I really enjoyed Dark Roots of the Earth for the most part im really looking forward to the new album even more now and what this particular line-up can bring!

I think The New Order was their last great album. Regardless, it probably won't hurt the next one they do to have Steve on bass. They seem to be progressing in the right direction since the highly underwhelming "The Gathering". Albeit with large gaps of time between albums.

The Gathering was a masterpiece, not a wasted second. Highly diverse in styles, structures, vocals. It was the perfect album and still sounds great 15 years on. The last two albums have been okay, with some excellent songs.

I can't see how Alex would stick around much longer though. The other members have been assembled to bring it fast and heavy, that isn't usually Alex's cup of tea. They haven't had any trouble in the past getting a top quality lead guitarist in, if it came down to it.

In your opinion sure, in mine... completely boring and rarely a single song from it gets played anymore by me it tries to be heavy through the production instead of the music and just sounds forced. Testament threw down back in the day though. First 2 albums were outrageous.
