Stranger Than Fiction: Real Metal By Virtual Artists

Do you remember...

...1984, when the virtual TV host Max Headroom stuttered his name for the very first time?
...1985, when the cute fellow of Little Computer People was your only friend?
...1997, when your digital pocket pet Tamagotchi starved to death and you didn't know how and where to burry it?
...2001, when the debut album of the virtual band Gorillaz went triple Platinum in the UK?
...2012, when iconic rapper Tupac Shakur's hologram performed at the Cuachella festival, over 15 years after his decease?
...2017, when AI robot Sophia received citizenship of Saudi Arabia?

Let's just forget about that hologram tour of Ronnie James Dio for a moment, for metal will always be handmade music from real musicians and for real fans...

...but how genuine is your favorite band?

This list includes fictional or virtual or artificial artists only.
Admission criteria:
- at least one complete song (not just song snippets)
- hard rock and metal only
- fictional line-up/biography or artificial/virtual origin are mandatory
- media appearance outside of the music scene (movies, film series, videos, TV shows, web comics and comic strips, books, computer games, advertising campaigns) prior to or simultaneously with the release of their debut album

Please note that not all bands bearing goofy stage names and wearing funny costumes like Gwar or Lordi are virtual or fictional bands.
Most comedy/parody outfits like Nanowar Of Steel or Paladins Of The Golden Power Fights With The Great Sword Of Eternal Magic And The Great Kings Will are neither virtual nor fictional.
Spin-offs and side projects like Gloryhammer or Lorenguard are not really fictional, either - they just invented some stupid background story to justify their existence.
After all and sadly enough, even Manowar are not a fictional band...

"What is Fake News? I turned an empty room into an international headline.
If you are reading this, you are part of the illusion."
- Jered Threatin, Nov. 2018

Can this make it to the list ?

the anime K-On! isn't about metal but it happens to have this J-speed-metal-something in it. Later when the creators wanted to sell merchandise they recorded a single for Death Devil. Also all the voice-actresses had to learn their character's instrument and perform a concert as impersonations of the anime band.

on the same topic with have this AI-generated brutal death

The hypthetical band name would be Relentless Doppleganger, although we can't really speak of any written song.

And also, yeah do vocaloids count ? they are basically vocal synthesizers but their creators have been characterizing them, each programm as a name, a different "voice" and an image, i don't know for sure but possibly backstories. They also can make live appearance through holograms.

here's some examples of vocaloid, but quite frankly it's not the best, and also I can't really call this metal.

a live appearance

I can't really define this genre of music that's a blend of j-pop, rock, metal, electro and dubstep sometimes all at once.

some more

(EDIT: disclaimer, Yuaru is not a vocaloid, she's a real human being singing through a lot of effects, but I've got mistaken because it sounds like one)

And sorry to triple-post but what about Tenacious D ? they started for a TV series I think (or is it that they play their own role?) anyway they cleary have a fictionnal component with the audio-sketches and the movie

in the same category: Wayne's World, comedy from 1992 about underground rockers hired to broadcast a TV show
the two main protagonists could be counted as a band (even though they're lame - see Pain Cave)

Well, I did consider Tenacious D at some point because they started as a fictional band ("Mr. Show with Bob and David", 1997) but I didn't include them due to their music: to me, it was basically just a rock band.
But I guess I was wrong, they have pretty much of Hard Rock and even some (tongue-in-cheek) Metal influence so I will add them - thanks!

I am thankful you posted this because vocaloids indeed are an important part of today's music industry - but I'm just glad it's not that big in all parts of the world.

In fact, I did mention Miku Hatsune, the waifu/husbando phenomenon and even a "real" virtual waifu marriage in the original version of the introductory text - but I deleted everything again. I mean, you will find countless releases (maybe "creations" is a better term) of this kind of music on YouTube and as you said - it's not really metal.

For the time being, I guess it's better not to include vocaloids.

Dead Makabés from the french comedy "Pop Redemption". The black metal quator is chased by the police had have to travesty as a hippie band. It's not a good movie (not funny and messing everything up about the topic), but the real travesty was to have the actual pop singer Julien Doré as the black metal singer. There's a couple of metal songs in the soundtrack.

And Love Fist from GTA:Vice CIty, the over-the-top hair metal band carricature

Thanks man, added both bands with pleasure.

It's funny how hard it was to find some decent info on Dead Makabés, it seems there has never been an English version of the movie but only German, Russian and Portuguese translations. As if there was still some cultural gap between France and the anglophone part of the world, in particual outside of continental Europe...

I thought I could find infinitely many fictionnal bands but in fact I'm running out of ideas. I've been thinking of video games, movies, sketches, parody, mangas, visual novels and fan-fictions but metal isn't used too much...

there's another anime called Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad about a band of teenagers, they play a mix of hard rock, punk and hip hop

an odd occurrence that maybe you know is from a Devin Townsend album, Punky Bruster: Cooked On Phonics.

I thought I could find infinitely many fictionnal bands but in fact I'm running out of ideas. I've been thinking of video games, movies, sketches, parody, mangas, visual novels and fan-fictions but metal isn't used too much...

I have found quite a bunch of fictional metal bands, much more than I had expected:

Crucifictorious (Friday Night Lights tv series), The Blender Children (Tapeheads), The Meddling Kids (Scooby-Doo and the Legend of the Vampire), Eviscerated Panda (Sarah Tipper's novels), Stench Of Death (Coronation Street tv series), Blood Pollution (Rock Star movie), Wyld Stallyns (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure), Sonic Grave (Dead Ant horror comedy movie), The Bonecrushers (Mama's Family sitcom), Vesuvius (The Rocker movie), Rock Toxin (Pop Rocks movie), Death Maggot (some U.S. anti-smoking campaign), Blight Boar (World of Warcraft), The Dreggs of Humanity (It's Your Move sitcom), Slaughterhouse (Death Metal Massacre horror movie), Black Roses (Black Roses horror movie), Snakes n' Barrels (Adult Swim: Metalocalypse), DÖI (Homestar Runner), Escape Band (Rock 'n' Roll Cowboys movie), Big Mountain Fudgecake (King of the Hill), Tears of Blood (Wizards of Waverly Place sitcom), Keelhaul (Escape From Monkey Island), The Plague (from some ancient episode of Sledge Hammer), Aggretsuko (Netflix anime series), Roäd Kyll (Dinosaurs tv series), Discreet Annihilation (Saturday Night Live), Flesh Fair Band (= Ministry, from Artificial Intelligence: A.I.), Sanctified (South Park), Blood Butcher (A.N.T. Farm sitcom), Slash Monkey (Transformers Prime tv series), Abyssinister (Death Metal horror movie), Blight Boar (World of Warcraft), The Kickers (Trick Or Treat movie)...

But I didn't include any of those mainly due to the lack of a factual release in the real world. I deliberately neglect to add a band if I can't even find a single song that has been published under the moniker of the fictional artist, elsewhise the list would be really huge.

an odd occurrence that maybe you know is from a Devin Townsend album, Punky Bruster: Cooked On Phonics.

Heard three songs from Mongolian Chop Squad, they play rather punk and rock than metal and hard rock if you ask me. One song was plain pop rock...
I guess they are worthy of further reflection, but for the moment I'd say they do not really belong here.

Punky Brüster is a tough one.
Most people say it's a side-project and it tells the story of a fictional band called Punky Brüster just like Ziltoid The Omniscient features the actions of an alien called Ziltoid and Savatage's Streets chronicles the downfall of a fictional rock star called DT Jesus.
Neither Ziltoid nor DT Jesus are fictional artists, they are just characters of a story...
But fact is that Cooked on Phonics was initially released under the name of Punky Brüster and their fictional biography and fictional line-up are undeniable, so it's got to be a fictional band. Added...

Thanks again, you have been a great help so far!

Reviving this cool-ass list to point out the Master Boot Record is considered a autonomous self-sentient computer making its own music, so I wondered if that counted.

Thanks for filling this list with some (virtual) life again!

What of a real band but with a vocaloid vocalist? Like here?

Thanks!
