FRA, Toulouse - Kruger & Coilguns: Euro Fall Tour 2014 by Darkside Momo (36) |
Another evening in the Dynamo in Toulouse, with another show booked by the everactive Noiser team. This time around, we were in for some Swiss craziness, with Coilguns and Kruger, supported by two quality French bands...
Yet, for some reason, this nice bill didn't draw people around. Seriously, we were about 50 at this show (and around 70 on most of the other dates of this tour); sadly, I'm not kidding. Oh well, the absentees were wrong as always, but sure they should have been there for some moshpits to form and to sustain the antics of... well, more on that later Let's just say for now that polluted air of French cities has a strange effect on people used to clear and fresh mountain air - Swiss singers, more precisely On that topic, I must mention that the Dynamo boasts a balcony...
Nojia
This instrumental post-rock / post-metal outfit is the side project of Mickael André (of Eryn Non Dae.),also featuring some Ethersens and Zubrowska members.
It was my first contact with them, but they're not really a new band as I discovered later; they just don't play live that often it seems. But they should! Because the kind of stuff they play is usually either quickly boring or entrancing live, and Nojia easily falls in the second category - seriously, their soundscapes created images in my mind and sent me daydreaming (almost) for half an hour.
An excellent discovery, and a great first set for an already promising evening.
BTW, their new EP is out! Check it out here, and enjoy!
Nesseria
Starting their French & Spain tour to promote their new album, Nesseria was easily the most violent band of the evening, with their quite chaotic hardcore spiced with some grinding parts. Converge is an obvious reference but not the only one - and certainly not to the point of copypasting.
With their chaotic violence (and this oh-my-god powerful drumming - the guy was a riot of precise violence all by himself), they sure would have deserved a intense moshpit, but there were too few people for that - which seems to disappoint Julien (vocals) quite a bit, to say the least.
In total hardcore/grindcore tradition, songs (when introduced by Julien) were critical and based upon society and religious topics, like "Civitas", based on the catholic extremists of the same name (remember the controversy about Hellfest caused by these morons? Civitas were on the front-line). Same goes for the last song, "dedicated to women", called "les filles de Dieu" ("Daughters of God"); he told us that, whatever religion you're looking at, women are reduced to a subservient role, if not outright slavery. The heaviness and crushing, sad anger of this last song (a bloody damn excellent one, to be sure) left no doubts about the band's point of view on this topic.
As always, the Noiser team was awesome enough to record the whole sets, so you can watch Nesseria's show here. If you prefer to sample their studio works, their bandcamp is here.
Coilguns
This report features hugs of a rare violence - reader's discretion is advised.
Remember this piece of news? Well, as mentioned, Coilguns is the band all three Swiss friends focus their efforts on nowadays. Quoting their Bandcamp: "Coilguns' line-up is pretty unique: drummer Luc Hess and guitarist Jona Nido are the only instrumentalists in the band. A massive custom-built pedal board and a well thought-out chain of several amps allows Jona to sound like 2 guitar players and a bass player altogether. Vocalist Louis Jucker completes the lineup."
I should have took a pic of that impressive pedal board indeed. But well, the important fact, right now, is that we have a vocalist and vocalist only. A guy used to crowdsurf, sometimes still playing guitar or bass, while he was in The Ocean. Do you really think you can stop him from moving around and making crazy antics, one after another?
No, you can't. No one can. I think he spend more time out of the stage than on it. Sitting or rolling on the floor, running through the sparce crowd, making crazy faces, climbing on the balcony - he took the safe way using the stairs next to the counter - or whatever took his fancy, he was, well, unstoppable. And he loved us SOOOOOOO much (well, two people at least)!
I warned you ;P
The music? Well... It was almost as chaotic as Louis' attitude, but the best song for sure was when he took a guitar; as an additional bass player came onstage, the sound became truly massive.
In the end, I suppose Louis' antics are certainly too much for their own good, as you concentrate more on his behavior than on the music, but hey, that made for a good - if sometimes awkward - moment! Anyway, not to spoil the beans already, but in whatever contest he had with Kruger's singer, he might have been crazier, but I guess he lost
Wanna enjoy the show safely in front of your computer? Here's the video! If you prefer, here's their bandcamp...
Kruger
There was so much love in this set... There was so much energy naturally flowing from around everywhere, the sound was so dense and intense, it felt like we were all in a warm bubble. And when I say love, I mean it. Their latest opus is called Adam & Steve, after all.
As for stage antics - since I'm bound to mention that topic - let's just say that Renaud is more controlled than Louis, yet no less crazy - and probably a bit more charismatic too. There was no stopping him either. Spitting in the air then catching it, playing with his micro stand, singing in the crowd, or climbing - directly from the stage - onto the balcony TWICE, or god-knows-what-else, the guy's really impressive. And pretty athletic took!
Music-wise, Kruger have a personal sound, somewhat described by a mix of (post-)hardcore and various other stuff (on their website, they're mentioned as "sludge / post-hardcore / alternative rock", while on their facebook it's "You tell us?" - I like that one). It's catchy, intense, yet not totally user friendly either. And bloody damn excellent!
What can I say more? Just watch the show, and don't miss them next time they play near you, goddamnit!
Tl;dr version: One hell of a fantastic evening!!!
Thanks as always to the Noiser team, and to the bands too, who gave their best even in front of such a small audience!
