Why? Why am I listening to this? I thought I outgrew predictable death metal 5 years ago. Alas, it appears I need to do my reviewing homework so let's make an attempt to analyze this boring pile of crap.

Predictable, boring, unexciting - all words to describe this album...in fact, feel free to go ahead and return to watching porn because you've already got the jist of where this review is going. Death Toll Rising; even the name is about as uncreative as it gets! Perhaps I would have found such a name enticing when I was 13, but we're all a little too jaded for this crap by now. Usually when listening to an album, you let it play through, then occasionally look back at your media player (or whatever your format is) to make mental notes whenever something sticks out, with Defecation Suffocation it was difficult to remember it was even still playing, let alone make any sort of memorable impression. As for variation? Nothing. Maybe some tempo changes here and there, a slight pitch change in the growls, a solo popping up every now and then. Possibly some brief entertainment for death metal die-hards, certainly not much past that.

Death Toll Rising have put out another one of those album which doesn't contain anything that's particularly offensive to metal fans, but just lacks any sort of character of it's own. It's not one to slap the "avoid!" tag onto, as there is nothing specifically wrong with what they're doing here, it's just flat and unremarkable.

Pretty fun for the first spin or two, but after that it loses its charm. I'd give it around a 6.0 or so (+1 for death by fecal matter).

A positive/negative depending on personal tastes: Their lead vocalist sounds similar to Angela Gossow, and their is plenty of melody to be found in and amongst the chugging.

I haven't listen to this album, and I don't think I will but, if you "outgrew" death metal, then why will you make a review of a death metal album?

Record labels request reviews from the staffers, as far as I know. This is a webzine, after all.

I understand your point but that doesn't answer my question. If they ask him to review it why did he took it instead of giving it to someone more into the genre?

I'm not sure. I think they specifically ask one of the staff reviewers to do it, and it's yes or no, if the latter, send it to another staff reviewer and wait for a response.

Ask a staff reviewer.

He said, and I quote " it appears I need to do my reviewing homework so let's make an attempt to analyze this boring pile of crap." why do it?, if he knows he doesn't like it. Again, never heard of the band but it gives me a bad vibe if I start reading a review with that intro. Just my too cent you don't need to crucify me for it, I have nothing against the reviewer. Peace.

With what you quoted I think he means to say he has to review it whether or not he likes the album. And reviewers get to review albums they don't like all of the time. So he regards having to wriite the review as homework. I don't see a problem with that at all.

I think that was my initial question, if he HAS to do it , then I understand the beginning of the review, I though he has a choice in what album to review or not. Thanks for making that clear.

Aha I see. Sorry for not understanding your initial question.

I know enough about it to put out a fair review. Just because Death Metal isn't my number #1 genre of choice doesn't mean I'm not at least somewhat learned in it.

And Vezzy is right, labels come to us for reviews, either sending us albums or (in most cases), supplying download links for all the albums they want reviewed. DTR released this album either through Diminished 5th Records or Hogan Media (both owned by the same guy, closely associated with one another).
