Oh man, I'm late to the party... and it looks like everyone already got angry and broke everything.

Renegades is a controversial topic for Equilibrium fans. I put off listening to it for years because what I originally heard sounded like a big change that I wasn't eager for. Reading many reactions back then wasn't surprising because the metal community doesn't usually respond well to change, but I always wondered whether all those negative comments were accurate or exaggerated. The band added elements of pop music to try to go more mainstream, but that doesn't automatically mean it's bad. Considering I loved when Finsterforst made #‎YØLØ‬, I should be one of the few people who like this, right?

Apparently not. The best thing I can say is that it is a very interesting, professionally crafted mess. "Renegades - A Lost Generation" and "Himmel Und Feuer" I actually enjoy, and a few other songs are pretty close to being good. This is obviously far removed from the olden folky days and I can appreciate that René Berthiaume wanted to do something different, but it's a shame to hear how it turned out. For over half the album, I try to think of how this came to (Johnny) be, and it's confounding.

"Path Of Destiny" is where I know this is wrong. It starts out normally enough, but the poppy (or poopy) chorus doesn't have much energy and is noticeably out of place. Around the time the rap begins, I'm really starting to wonder where the heck Robse is. I flashback to when I first got dropped off at kindergarten, my mom has left, there are all these strange people around, and I'm starting to get scared that I live here forever now. The rest of the songs mostly don't work either. For a lot of the clean singing parts, they could have easily layered Robse growling underneath to make it sound like more of a full band effort, but more often than not it seems like he's missing. To make matters worse, the pop sections that have been shoehorned into these songs are pretty uninteresting. It's the weakest aspect, and I'm not just saying that because it's not metal; even as earworm choruses, I forget them as soon as they are over.

There are four band members credited as doing vocals, and a guest vocalist too, so things feel crowded. If one person has been the main vocalist for nine years, they should probably do the majority of the vocals. That's not a rule, but if everyone else is sharing just as much vocal duty then I get confused as to why that decision was made. Having a separate clean singer when your main vocalist doesn't do clean singing is one thing, but to have a second person also doing lead growls/screams, then it really seems like there was a problem behind the scenes. Maybe Robse just didn't fit with what René wanted to do anymore. Maybe Robse was humble enough to share the spotlight. Who knows? I can tell René was passionate about this album. I can't fault him for trying, but I have a problem with how it appears he handled it. To make this album while apparently throwing longtime vocalist Robse under the bus seems like a bad move. A few years later, René announced Robse is out of the band, and made it sound like it was his fault for being close-minded, which comes off even worse. I hope Robse ends up somewhere better.

The three singles they released between 2020-2021 felt like a step back in the right direction, but Robse is gone now, and with a new album supposedly on the horizon, we'll see what happens.

My ratings might seem mismatched, but the overall rating does reflect my full feelings of Renegades. The production sounds great, none of the performances sound phoned-in, and this was certainly original for Equilibrium. The songwriting is the only place I can easily deduct points because I view this album as fundamentally flawed as a concept in the way it was executed. A few small changes might have made it shine and feel like much less of a slap to the face.

Idk man, I agree with what most of what you've written. It all just feels Rene doesn't know what to do and mushes it all together (you have the old folky sounds and orchestras and synths and all the vocals) and gives this mainstream overproduced sound which I I think is where it ultimately all falls apart. And also that its all just basic song forms. Not sure where he's headed with that. But just like you, I do love that the band evolves somewhere, doesn't just stay in one place (kinda like Finsterforst do, although they are slowly perfecting the form kinda premade by songs like Mana or Tulimyrsky so there is that).

I do think this was worth them trying and it could have turned out pretty good, but it sounds like Rene tried to marry his new ideas with Equilibrium's old sound by using a crowbar which is why it fails. And yes, all the basic song structures also seem to suggest he really wanted this to go mainstream, not that he wasn't creative, but his longer progressive writing is mostly absent. I'd much rather have a band try something new than do the same thing forever and I still think Rene can make more good music, even in this direction, but this album was mostly a (hype)trainwreck.

Well I come here right after hearing another snippet of Shelter, which is to come out at 7th of July. Have you heard it? I read a lot of stuff Rene has posted over the years and it was a lot about how they have evolved as a band and stuff... I feel like the snippet sounds exactly like Renegades, from the (over)production to the sounds of lead melody synth+flute+guitar+something plucked. I'm getting really pessimistic here tbh but fingers crossed...
But at the same time I understand there is some backlash from the fans, as you were saying, who know and love the old epic folk metal sounding band, preferably with Sandra and Helge, so it seems there is a lot to work with in terms of calming down the fanbase and having them accept the evolvement. Maybe as a middle road, he just glues all the stuff into itself so that there is everything everywhere all at once and this is the result...

btw I think there is a good precedent of this done right, and it is Turisas. But somehow, they kinda ended after that album lol

...

I listened to a couple seconds but decided I'm going to wait until the whole thing is posted before I make any expectations, although honestly I've been pessimistic about what they'll do next since Robse left the band. I felt like up until Renegades they evolved pretty steadily down a clear path but then Rene took a hard left to get onto the main motorway. I know better than to wish for another Turis Fratyr or Sagas, but if the new stuff is going to have a lot of pop influences again then I hope he's better at integrating them this time.

I didn't find Turisas' last album very satisfying but it did some some pretty good moments. I hope they re-emerge someday.

Just listened to Shelter and, yep, the old Equilibrium is certainly dead and buried. Evolving is one thing, forgetting where your roots lie is an entirely other one.
This is simply overproduced run-of-the-mill metal with some epic influences. What a shame!

Now I know why I stopped buying Equilibrium albums...

Its fine to "leave your roots behind". I think this is more of a problem with not really leaving it but wanting to do something else, so that you put it all there hoping nobody notices.

Shelter sound absolutely the same as the whole Renegades thing. Im sorry, I might not be good with nuances but just like singles in between, I see no difference. And the new singer? He is probably better than Robse but I've never really been too fond of Robse anyway even though his performance is stellar on Rekreatur (but I think its more that the album has been shaped around his capabilities and range). And! I do like the visual I think. What they wear and stuff.. That's nice.

So ye... not great. Like, its okay to make music I personally don't like. Im just disappointed about it being announced as "something new and different now" when its not...

I just listened to it myself and yes it is a shame indeed. I liked the few little melodies it had but that was the only thing in there to suggest what they used to be, otherwise it just sounds like standard metalcore which was already done to death over a decade ago. I might check out their new album but I suspect it will be the last thing of theirs I listen to.

This style could work better for them if they added a bit more to it. It still would be a departure from their older sound but as it is it's not interesting at all. Maybe they enjoy making this kind of music more but it isn't going to stand out and they will probably alienate more people than they will bring in. The new singer is ok, he fits what they are doing and he has some decent range. I originally wrote in my review but ended up cutting out that Robse was never an amazing vocalist but he was always solid even though after Rekreatur his performance became less dynamic and more guttural. It was clear on Renegades that he didn't cover all the ranges that Rene wanted. This new guy sounds like he could, but I'm not sure I want to listen to much more. You're right that this isn't new, it's overdone and there are many who have done it far better. Disappointing.

It was clear from day one that Robse is no Helge...

But this nostalgic old geezer will cherish Turis Fratyr and Sagas.
