If you don't know this band: combine Darkthrone on steroids with Burzum tracks like "War" and throw in a little (more) punk and you'll end up with Dodsferd. Hate, misanthropy and death are the musical and lyrical themes of the six long tracks, which together rack up to three quarters of agonized, punkish and raw Black 'n Roll. Stand-out elements are the anguished, Varg-esq high-pitched screams and the occasional shouts Wrath belts out. No single bit of originality, though.
Is that total and utter disaster? Not necessarily. As long as there as there's the black flame, which possesses Dodsferd from time to time, I'm cool with it. "Death Set The Beginning Of My Journey" contains songs that succeed, because they just have that extra bit (title track for example), and songs that don't. The title track is a good example of a song where it all works out, but the other songs lack a real individual identity. After a while it all turns into a haze of indistinguishable (and therefore uninteresting) hatred.
Once again, those that liked the previous efforts of this band, or similar bands, can blindly purchase this stuff. If not – stay away. In my opinion the songs miss either a face of their own or that extra bit of over-the-top insanity to make it interesting, and this was probably my last listening session with this album, but true Raw Black metal junkies will surely love this.
