When the band you're about to write a review for doesn't seem to be one of the sheer 72000 metal tagged bands on Encyclopaedia Metallum, you can have either of the following reactions:

  • Tremble with fear. If even Metal Archives don't have the answers anymore, who knows what is coming your way now.
  • Rejoice! You're one of the cool kids who knows of a metal band that is more kvlt than the one-man black metal band, that is a side-project of another one-man ambient side-project, that only recorded one demo song in his mom's basement for a split CD (limited to 66,6 hand numbered copies), with yet another Norwegian schooled black metal side-project nobody has ever heard of, except for both guys and both guys' mom.

And what is coming round my way this time is a band driving Big Bear choppers, wearing 70's sunglasses. Aw yeah, I'm talking old school before the schools were build. I'm talking traditional when Christmas turkey and singing carols were only becoming the latest hype. I'm talking good ol' hard rocking heavy metal.

With a flare for catchy rock 'n' roll riffs, Sutuana's melodic kind of heavy metal is reaching to a broad hard rock audience. What's making Sutuana's vintage sound so special, however, is that it isn't mired in clichés. Sure I may not understand a damn thing of what they're singing, and sure I can totally taste the dark, smoky pool hall decorated with beer memorabilia where this band plays every three weeks, but still these guys try to do it their way. And I must say, their method of playing powerful and fairly straight forward hard rock with a gentle touch of early heavy metal is fairly successful. Nothing outstanding, but still highly enjoyable.

The album has a few minor drawbacks though. For starters; the cover artwork. This is one of the most godawful covers I've ever seen. Plus, it's totally doesn't match the walls in my pool hall, dammit. Ah well, at least the cover art of their demo makes up for it. Secondly, Sutuana aren't straight forward all the way. They lose a couple of points with the piano interlude and the close to annoying sound samples. Except the one on "Mandami Una Cartolina", that one's hilarious. I imagine it's a guy recovering from praying to the porcelain god (Bless, O Lord, these pints of beer and nachos with cheese, beef and beans), while the band starts playing in the background. Brilliant! That is exactly how I imagine my pool hall. Maybe these samples are all part of a bigger image that would make sense if I would know what the lyrical concepts are all about... but I don't, so yeah, fuck it dude, let's go play pool.

Dust off them denim jackets kids, relax, sit back and restore your rocker reputation of yore with Sutuana.
