Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Calling It Quits

Finnish extreme power metal band Eternal Tears Of Sorrow has officially disbanded, as confirmed by the group's founders, guitarist Jarmo Puolakanaho and bassist-vocalist Altti Veteläinen. Formed in 1994, the band released seven albums between 1997 and 2013 and had been on hiatus since 2023. The decision to part ways was mutual, with no conflict or disagreements. There are no plans for a farewell show or compilation release, and no unreleased songs will be made available in the future.

The statement reads as follows: "The two of us began this Eternal Tears Of Sorrow journey back in early 1992 when we formed Andromeda. After a few twists, it became Eternal Tears Of Sorrow — a band that lasted for about 30 years.

Now, it’s our turn to turn off the lights.

Eternal Tears Of Sorrow has completed its journey. This is the end. We’ve seen, experienced, and done everything possible for this band, for our fans. This is a mutual decision, with every member fully behind it, and there’s no hard feelings this time.

We want to thank everyone for these incredible years — every member who has ever been part of the band, everyone who has worked with us behind the scenes, and all of you who have supported us in any way, especially you, our fans. We are eternally grateful.

There are two memories we both hold especially dear. One was our first tour — the 2000 European tour with Nightwish and Sinergy. The other was our last tour — the 2016 Japanese headlining tour. Both were dreams come true in different ways.

Life goes on, and so does the music. We both continue making music, separately. Altti’s gothic metal band has a second album coming later this year, and there’s an album from my brand-new melodic death metal band scheduled for release next year. More details will be shared when the time is right."

Noooooooooooo, while secretly I was lureking on they social media and hoping for new album, specially 3 more, for milestone. Its equal tragedy as Sentenced broke up. Kalmah and Catamenia might be half buried to, but sad if band has unrealisee songs, why not share.
Its time to widow bride of the Crimson sea, and listen to nighwings lullaby, lie down on barrel soil when falling leaves close kast rays of the sun, because sea of whispers.

My inspire me re start writing poetry again, sad on if my favorite bands.

Was wondering why we haven't heard from the band in such a long time. Not surprising they broke up since they haven't come out with an album since 2013, but still very disappointing.

Sad, but, then again, hiatus tend to result in bad news over time (50, 50).

Now, for the good news…
Next year, in our second hometown of Oulu, there will be an exhibition featuring many metal bands from the region—a proper museum exhibition that will run for two years. EToS will be part of it, with a dedicated section.
Let’s call it closure. The epilogue. We can’t think of a better way to lay this dear band to rest. It’s an honour.
You’re all welcome to visit the exhibition in Oulu in autumn 2026. We’ll be there when it opens, so please join us. More details coming soon.
So, one last time—thank you all!

Same time I say this is better way whit all good killer albums, because those albums never will die.

Sad to hear but life goes on indeed, and this was a descent closure. I would still love some final release or release of something. A live album? But happy that FMP is continuing and Jarmo's new band. It's been a blast! I'll cotninue blasting some EToS while running, boy can they give some energy boost when you think you have nothing more to give. All the best! I discovered EToS back in 2006. Good times!

Not a terrible surprise. They stagnated HARD after A Virgin And A Whore.

(Not So Eternal) Tears Of Sorrow - in fairness, with no album in over a decade, it's not the most surprising news. Never delved into their catalogue as deeply as I should have, but A Virgin And A Whore will always be a classic for the genre, and I liked Saivon Lapsi enough that I would have been excited for more had they continued on.

Same whit Catamenia and Kalmah might be same
Seems Kemi and Oulu scene is dying. That Nordic Finlands village, and city/town has offer us many legendary bands in a 90's what comes after, they wont reach so high points in a game as mid 90's bands

Wait why do you bring Kalmah up and also mentioned them being almost buried in an earlier comment? I don't get it? The guys have gigs planned this year and released an album in 2023? It's not like they've stopped doing stuff or have fallen into obscurity. Am I missing a piece of news or something? If so please enlighten me because I love that band.

Not very surprising. Their last album was released back in 2013 and even then they probably hadn't been that hot anymore for years. Chaotic Beauty and Virgin were the shit, and those were released more than 20 years ago.

A self-titled album doesn't means an ending, if that's what you saying.

Theatre of Tragedy's, W.A.S.P.'s, Motörhead's, Iron Maiden & Black Sabbath's first albums were all self-titled.

To the best I can be in his shoes, I think he meant about his consternation when band names album self-title. May be, he was trying to make a point from here.

Yes, most songs were half written in 90s under Ancestor name, plus it's 9th album, and not like band tour 150 days per year and are active , between albums they was silent
