Everyone has a different opinion and I respect that. I just find Megadeth more nuanced and diverse than Slayer. The guitar solos are more interesting and can be very melodic. Also, Slayer is constantly fast while Megadeth is more unpredictable. At least that's my impression

It's less the speed of Slayer and more the tone, I love Slayer for the same reasons I love Black Metal and Doom Metal - I love evil or dark riffs and Megadeth sometimes give me that like in Devil's Island but then the mood suddenly lightens. With Slayer I never need to worry about the mood lightening.

Yeah that is cool. From a positive perspective they're consistent. From a negative perspective you could say they're static.
Maybe I'll check them out again. Any songs you especially suggest?

If you're not into their fast aggressive stuff the more creepy moody tracks I recommend would are:
Seasons in the Abyss
South of Heaven
213
Dead Skin Mask
Eyes of the Insane
God Send Death
Spill the Blood
Deviance
Final Six
Ghosts of War (much of it is fast but the slower mid section is imo the best example of what the King/Hannemann team did better than anybody, it always gives me chills)

But then this type of atmosphere has always appealed to me most whether it's in Thrash, Doom, Industrial, Goth Rock, Horror movie soundtracks or whatever.

Ok Slayer have grown on me. I agree with what you said about the reliable dark atmosphere and great riffs - that's indeed their strong suit. My favorite Slayer albums are now Show No Mercy and Seasons in the Abyss.
I think I was mainly initially put off by the wailing guitar solos on Reign in Blood. I prefer, like you, the slower doom-y songs on Seasons or Hell Awaits and the great melodies on Show No Mercy. I guess (other than Reign) I've been converted

It’s a miracle!
Just curious, have you delved into the divisive post-Seasons era?

(Although I do still feel the urge to stick up for Reign’s atmosphere on the second half of the album particularly Post Mortem.)

No I haven't. Where do you recommend to start?

Yeah the riff of postmortem is good and I like the transition from postmortem to Raining Blood. The second half of the album, you say? Hmm. I'll have to look at it again.

Post-80’s Slayer is tricky, they still deliver awesome songs but the whole albums are definitely in the shadow of the classic era. I would say Christ Illusion and Divine Intervention are the best of the bunch, I have a soft spot for God Hates Us All though even though it’s half great and half filler and as far as Diabolus is concerned, I’ll die on hill defending Stain Of Mind.

I never listened to Repentless though, didn’t feel right to me. Some band members aren’t replaceable.
