Nice to see Nightfall in Middle-Earth! And Sound of Perseverance is at least an honorable mention - nice
I've started listening to Nile. "Annihilation" and "Darkened Shrines" is growing on me. Maybe I'll check out "Amongst the Catacombs" too

Once again we have a very different list, with only System Of A Down in common. Mine would rather include Forgotten Silence, Meshuggah, Gorguts, Opeth, Obtained Enslavement and Melt-Banana

I actually put off listening to Nightfall... from start to finish until doing this, I had heard the big songs like Mirror Mirror before but didn’t want to deal with that many tracks and all the interludes. But after finishing it I had it to them, it really did live up to the hype.
Death was on but kept getting bumped down until it was off. If I get hate so be it but I recognise how good it is it’s just probably the furthest Death album from giving me what I really want in a Death album. Great album but I’m just not the technical dude.
Annihilation is my favourite Death Metal album, Catacombs only features Karl on vocals and clearly has much less budget than later albums but it gives you a great idea of what the band intends to achieve. A for ambition, almost got the top spot.
(Wow that was a long reply )

Always good to see System get love on a Metal site. Meshuggah were close actually, they aren’t always to my taste but I do respect them a lot and they’ll probably be on a future list. I tried Obscura but I think I’m someone it would probably take a few listens to appreciate, so there I’m admitting I’m not smart enough to get it.

It's good to see Tristania - Widow's Weeds on this list, that would be my favourite of the year, and 1998 was definitely a good year for metal

Cheers, they’ll be even higher in the next list.
Yes, ‘98 had a lot of variety to offer and better than I expected it to be.
