Qualeen's Albums-to-Listen-to Checklist

Thumbs up: +1
Fairly self-explanatory. I don't think I will approach these in any particular order, I'll treat it whimsically. I'm not sure what I'll do once I have familiarized myself with these sufficiently. I might go and leave a comment on the album's page.

Last updated on 4 May 2023.

EDIT: Actually, I'll just go from top to bottom, although sometimes I add albums somewhere near the top of the list.

Hi, thanks for the response. I can try to even prioritize these, it's just that it's gonna have to wait till tomorrow because I'm finishing listening to Allegaeon's Damnum now and I've got to sleep after.

What did you think of Purgatory Afterglow?

Really good stuff. I loved "Twilight". Where Opeth used to mix death metal elements with acoustic features, on this album Edge of Sanity do a similar thing but with melodeath (before melodeath was really a thing, as far as I know) instead, apparently. It's insane how good the melodies are on this. Production was also very much fine for an album from the early 90's. It's a 9 for me for now!

I recommend you listen to this super interesting interview of Dan Swanö. There are some interesting insights into his projects over the years, including anecdotes about his job mixing the first two Dissection albums. Concerning Opeth and melodies, here are some highlights:

At 1:33:49 Dan says that he was "blown away" when he heard how well Mikael Akerfeldt could growl on Orchid. He points out that since both he and Mikael first learned to sing very good clean vocals, their growling still retains that singing melody; it's not just senseless gutturals - beneath it there's still the melody.

At 1:37:05 Dan also points out the difference between his switching between clean and growling vocals and the way that metalcore does it: "We were doing the verses for the girls and the choruses for the guys. All the other bands were doing it the other way around." So he means that he could do the in-between verses with clean vocals but then save the growling for the recurring chorus.

Wow, thanks for sharing! This really seems like it's gonna be tons of fun watching. Dan is the man... alongside the other projects he worked on that you mentioned, he also engineered Katatonia's Brave Murder Day and Bloodbath's Nightmares Made Flesh. He's a champ for that.
