MMXXIV As Told By Netzach

Thumbs up: +1
Another year, another futile attempt at creating a cohesive list of my musical explorations and an even more futile attempt at then remembering to keep said list up to date as the months progress. Hey, can't blame a guy for trying - trial and error, my friends, trial and error. If I'll manage to update the list in the future, consider buying lottery tickets, because the stars must have been aligned for a while already. Here we go then. Actually, speaking of gambling, it would be safe to bet on Pro Xristou staying put at the bottom of the list (hidden from sight out of "concerns"). Ok, I'll begin by listing them in order of likeability and likely end up just throwing stuff in there, if anything. I know, this leads nowhere, here we go:

1. Dödsrit - Nocturnal Will
Folk-infused, high-octane, hypnotic black with marvellous songwriting throughout. How many ways can you twist one riff while keeping it recognisable? Here's how.
2. Prognan - Sjene Nad Balkanom
Cinematic soundtrack-ish black metal where storytelling takes precedence above all else - hopefully they'll keep up the winning streak.
3. Vanhelgd - Atropos Doctrina
Not only everything you'd want from a death metal album, but with soulful melody and an icy blackened touch to boot. Stellar songwriting from start to finish.
4. Octoploid - Beyond The Aeons
A welcome revival of the sound cemented and then forgotten on Amorphis' 90s masterpiece Elegy. Not THAT good, but very welcome nonetheless.
5. Korpituli - Pohjola
A sharp left turn for this band, and all for the better. An off-kilter, almost avant-garde leaning take on pagan metal, as if Moonsorrow decided to go experimental on us.
6. Grima - Red Forest Ritual
It's from December 2023, and I found it now, deal with it. Towering, hypnotic atmospheric black with a funny sort of "anything goes" approach recorded live in the Siberian wilderness. Large music. As in "very big".
7. Locrian - End Terrain
"Accessible" is never appropriate for this band, but here Locrian balances their post-rock with their ambience and even add a surprisingly hooky riff or two. Moody as hell.
8. Mokoma - Myrsky
Prepare for thrash, death, and as always a bunch of unashamed pop. Mokoma never cared for who their audience is supposed to be, and that's pretty cool.
