Yeah, the non-metal parts were surprisingly good, even if much too much of the album is just alternating the metal and non-metal parts a bit too simply.

Yeah, the non-metal parts were surprisingly good, even if much too much of the album is just alternating the metal and non-metal parts a bit too simply.

There's definitely nice touches here (I like the slightly Fleetwood Mac bit towards the end of Son of Melancholia), but they do feel a bit too disconnected

Just finished up listening to this one. I thought it was overall really solid, even for all of its glaring similarities to others. A lot of the atmoblack passages felt quite derivative of the Cascadian scene. Skagos, Wolves In The Throne Room, Alda... just with less folky interpretations. Tons of Godspeed You! Black Emperor in the first three tracks as well.

This album was long as shit, or at least it felt like it; that's probably my biggest gripe with it. I love all the bands they're emulating, for the most part, so I don't mind its generic nature. They do have a bit of a focus problem, but it didn't negatively impact the album much for me. I'll have to listen to it a few more times.
