This is the start, where Voivod became to be one of the most unique metal bands!

Monster of an album. Might be my second favorite from them. "Psychic Vacuum" is a bone crusher!

Brain Scan probably will be the best song of Voivod.

Since there is no official review I am giving newcomers a little info to go on. No song by song though.
Dimension Hatross is the 1988 release from Canadian Quantum Physics Metal band Voivod. It is the second of a 3 album run that has become some of the most heralded and influential albums in not just metal but music. Unlike the previous album Killing Technology the thrash elements have been diminished significantly while guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour once again sets to raise the bar. Did he ever!! It takes some people more time to appreciate the dissonant broken chord jazzyiness of the band with DH. Once you can do that it will become very clear that this is an all time metal masterpiece that still continues to influence.

I enjoyed this album a lot more than Nothingface. While not perfect, the vocals did suit these songs much more than those on Nothingface. The instrument parts are just amazing! Well written, creative and impressively executed.

Never found this one as anything special, it's more like 2nd Killing Technology but not as good. The songwriting sounds incoherent which appears to be a trademark for the early Voivod albums. I think the band could do good things in prog, which doesn't apply much to this albums though. No favorite songs here.

I'd say that this album might be a bit too technical for you, but seeing your recent posts Voivod and tech-thrash is likely not for you.
Album is fantastic at any rate, Most of their early stuff is though I've always preferred The Outer Limits.

While I largely agree with your posts on the other Voivod albums, I strongly disagree with your post on the one at hand.
This is clearly their best album, it is full of great songs (all the first five songs at least).
You should give this one another chance. Since it is technical and complex to some degree this one might grow on you on several listens -- even if you dont like their other albums.

I think the technicality causes the songs to be incoherent on this album and KT. I don't dislike tech, I just simply like good songs and dislike bad songs.

I have listened both DH and KT lots of times since 2013 when I first heard them and I think they were better at first listens and have been un-growing on me after that. I prefer their proggier albums.

^ Voivod are an acquired taste anyway, I occasionally give them a listen, when I'm in the mood for them they deliver, very fun to listen to, I think that apparent incoherence mentioned above is what makes them interesting, they are unpredictable a lot of times.
Thank you for reviving these Voivod threads, it got me in the mood for them, listening to them right now.

It does make the songs original sounding and the riffing is unique as well, but it destroys the song structures in a bad way in my opinion. It is hard to like songs like these.

For 7 whole complete listens this didn't click with me, everything was so dissonant and the story didn't make sense... but the eighth time it was like some sort of the third eye opened, and now I just can't have enough of it. Easily one of the most unique music experiences I've had. But I completely understand that many don't like this, it is a really tough nut to crack.

Yes I suspect this album has some kind of mind control incorporated in its audio that works on the unconscious mind by repetition, and so makes the listener eventually perceive it as great. That would explain why the ratings are so surprisingly high. Needless to say, I'm unaffected to it

This album was the first I ever heard from Voivod, so I may be little biased. Dimension Hatröss is an oddball of an album with noticeably less rawness than the ones that came before it. The songs are weird but fun. They're so simple on paper, but somehow the band managed to make them sound even more alien and balls to the wall than before. You know, back when I was a teenager we had this habit of letting kids have their little show and play their favourite music on school radio each morning. I always wished I could go there and make kids listen some of this just for shits and giggles.
