Even though Metallica became more known to a wider audience in 1986 with the release of Master of Puppets, "The Black Album" (released in 1991) however, was the biggest break point for Metallica. It was praised by reviewers and musicians, it stunned many fans then and also now. With the "Black Album" their old thrashy sound was abandoned and Metallica was literally shot into superstardom. With commercial hits such as "Enter Sandman" and the widely known "Nothing Else Matters", Metallica's music became more and more accessible to radio stations and television. But as I said, I still believe it's a "must have". "The Black Album" was major break point in the rock music business and the influence of it and Metallica in general is just impossible not to notice. Not only does it differ musically from the previous four releases, this album is also lyrically much more personal and therefore occasionally softer. Still, Metallica hasn't lost their touch and the aggressive guitar sound is still there.

Like far too many people in this world, I was largely introduced to Metallica by their self-titled album, fueled by the super mega platinum #1 smash hit single "Enter Sandman." In fact, Metallica, known colloquially as "The Black Album" for its presumably Spinal Tap-inspired artwork, was, in fact, one of the first Metal albums that really resonated with me and warranted repeated listens. Even so, I cannot confess to having much of a sentimental connection with this album, because, after exploring the wide world of heavy metal and acquainting myself with REAL Metallica, it has become clear to me that this album is nothing special.

I am totally not a fan of the songs on this album, but one can't deny the absolute top-notch quality of the production which at the time set a standard for a lot of metal bands (i.e. Pantera's Vulgar Display Of Power) and still sounds full and delivering a punch in this day and age.

True, and I think I remember hearing once that they'd heard the sound of the Mötley Crüe album Dr. Feelgood and were so impressed with it that they decided to move on from Rasmussen and go with Rock for the production.

that indeed was the reason for them to work with Rock as producer. That and they wanted to break into the mainstream, so they thought it would be good to use Rock for that as well, since he was a mainstream metal producer

The black album was the last real enjoyabble album of Metallica for me. Although it was different from it's predecessors I really still enjoyed the album and i still do nowadays

Are you serious or just trolling?
Tastes differ, one man''s enjoyment is another's disappointment, as simple as that. An album that I might call a masterpiece is someone else's piece of crap (excuse the expression).

so I'm asking why is there such negative atmosphere against them? It's an important question for me that what exactly is THE thing people seek these days?what things a voice like James vocal and a music like what Metallica offers lack?why are people more and more into black and death metal?music is about something beautiful,i don't mean non-violent music, metal IS beautiful, but what kind of beauty do they find in for example black metal?or SOME death metal bands?

Ever heard that quote "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? This album, and this band for that matter, have never sounded "beautiful" to me, although at points they did manage to write some pretty good thrash. I grew up listening to this kind of music on rock radio - I enjoyed it at the time, but my tastes have changed quite a lot since then. There's nothing wrong with you thinking Metallica creates beautiful music, but that doesn't mean everyone sees it the same as you.

I've owned this album three times in various formats including cassette.

And each time I ended up getting rid of it.

There are some awesome songs on it - Unforgiven, Whereever I May Roam and Nothing Else Matters.

But a lot of the rest of the album just irritates the hell out of me. Of Wolf and Man and Through the Never particularly grate with me.

Yet there's times like now when this album hits the exact spot it's meant to.

Even though two songs of the twelve never really connected with you you rate it as a perfect album? Wow, how rosy coloured life must be for you finding perfection in imperfection.

He does admit nostalgia has something to do with the score.

If nostalgia influenced my score for this album I would score it a 3 or such instead of a 6 I think

Sounds like its release was quite traumatic.

What would you expect of someone who got into Metallica through their No Life till Leather demo?
