Demigod is by far Behemoth's best album to date!
I don't know if they'll ever match the greatness of this album ever again.

what? I hope you're kidding. Zos Kia and Satanica blow this one right out of the ball park, this is overly polished run of the mill death metal that has been done better before and after by many a band. Zos Kia and Satanica had a face of their own whereas this one doesn't.

Indeed, I cant see why their later material is preferred over those two (and Thelema for that matter) as those three albums by far surpass later Behemoth albums.

sorry couldn't think of Thelema, but that one should have been mentioned by me as well.

The guitar work on here is amazing, certainly one of the band's highlights. I'd like to think this is their best album, but I haven't listened to them all yet.

Why does the success and love of this album offend everyone? Yes, it is extremely polished but that's what's mainstream, the more polished the broader the audience. And sure it could be considered run of the mill death metal but imo its death metal done right, the layered vox and catchy riffs of deicide, the eastern influences of Nile, incredible drumming by Inferno and unique composition and songwriting. Maybe its the fact that this is Death Metal for the non-Death Metal fan? not trying to be a smartass thats an honest question lol

the layered vox
This is actually the worst aspect of the album, it would have been a lot better without this approach to the vocals.
And btw...
> catchy riffs of deicide
> eastern influences of Nile
> unique composition and songwriting
We have a problem there

You say this albums has riffs of <band>, eastern influences of <band> yet you mentioned unique songwriting as a feat. I really wouldn't include that in the list of strengths of this album.

Yes, unique "songwriting and composition" specifically. Meaning it takes those influences of Deicide and Nile and "composes" them in a catchy and palatable way. I never said this was the most original album in the world but rather a new spin on an old trick, which is all art is anyway.

NO.
Besides, this is hardly a "new spin on an old trick" seeing as Deicide and Nile did everything Behemoth are currently doing better that Behemoth ever will.

I don't think I've ever seen the connection made between Deicide and Behemoth until now but I guess everyone hears things differently.

While the execution is completely different, the connection between Nile and Behemoth should be pretty obvious..
As for Deicide, I''m not totally familiar with their discography but their song I listen to most, "Scars of the Crucifix" has alot of similar elements to the stuff found on Demigod. Using the band as a whole is probably reaching a bit, in retrospect, but listen to that song and you'll see what I mean.
Really all I was trying to do is understand why so many people hate on this album as I thought it was a pretty universally liked album up until recently.

a good extreme metal album should last no more than 30 minutes.
"Extreme metal" might be too broad a term, but for an album like Demigod I definitely agree.

I think most pure Death Metal and Grindcore albums don't have more than 30 minutes of music in them.
The genres themselves are too limited to allow for too much variation and thus after a while it starts getting repetitive.
There are exceptions of course - Nile and Morbid Angel comes to mind.
Basically before writing new material, every DM band should listen to Slayer's Reign In Blood and note playing time.
The Grind guys are smart enough to generally limit their albums to shorter playing times.
I agree, I just meant that extreme metal doesn't only include death metal.

This has come back a bit since but I still think 30 minutes is sweet spot for extreme metal be it Death, Grind, Industrial or more extreme forms of Thrash.
For those genres I would agree 99% of the time. As you said, some bands get away with it because they offer variety. However, I can listen to any extreme metal band that has some progressive or avantgarde or whatever thing going on for longer than 30 minutes. Also, extreme doom and a lot of black metal often grabs my attention for a longer time than death and thrash.

I can actuallly listen to Black Metal (and technical Death Metal) in moderate doses of 1 song. It's why I keep all my Terrorizer comps:
"In the mood for Black Metal/Technical Death Metal."
4 minutes later
"Excellent. Now for some Thrash."
Hah, I have that with certain bands, but not entire genres
