This is it. Finally, after more than 10 years of waiting, we have got It. The one, the only the true thrash metal album. Death have had six releases, have made some drastic changes in their style and have achieved it finally.

Despite being labeled as the fathers of death metal, only their first album is truly death metal, mainly due to vocal abilities of main-man Chuck Schuldiner, who was never really a death vocal. His singing has steadily and gradually evolved into more and more shrieking, until now on this album we hear him really screaming. Not many people came to terms with it and have accepted, but it is what thrash metal is all about. Its most distinct feature are the vocals and Chuck has shown what thrash vocals should sound like. Screaming, aggressive, full of feeling, coming right from the heart. True thrash metal that is.

I'm not going to start this review with whining about how unfortunate we are for having lost Chuck Schuldiner back in 2001 and The Sound Of Perseverance being the last Death album. Chuck was a great musician indeed, but fate was too cruel to him, and he passed away. The legacy in form of his music though is with us, so let's talk about it.

What started off from Individual Thought Patterns and continued through Symbolic as a slight progressive-thrash deviation for Death casts its full blown dominance in The Sound Of Perseverance. Just before Chuck goes out with his plans on Control Denied, this album comes out.

It is very hard to single out highlight songs from an album with so many exquisite technical creations, nevertheless, "Scavenger OF Human Sorrow", "Spirit Crusher", "Voice Of the Soul", "Bite the Pain", "A Moment Of Clarity" stand out among the tracks. Listening to the whole album from beginning to the end is a downright MUST and also a request.

What better name for a metal band? Especially one concentrating so fixedly on the snuffing out of life? The sonic blood-curdling career of mainman Chuck Schuldiner is one of the most celebrated in the development of death metal as a thrash sub-genre. Death were the daddies of this hack 'n' slay brand of guitar violence, and anyone with even the vaguest wish to count themselves as practitioners of extreme noise, from Carcass to Deicide, from Obituary to Cannibal Corpse, would count Schuldiner's unholy racket as a major influence.

Alright it isn't a huge difference but being #1 album of all time or #10 is still a bit of a gap.

My top 3 Death albums would be:
1. The Sound Of Perseverance - 9.7/10
2. Human - 9.3/10
3. Symbolic - 9.2/10

All others are below 8.5/10 IMO

All tracks on this album are fantastic IMO, only 'Story To Tell' is weaker than the others, but still a great song.

I'll never understand why so many rate this so highly, it's their worst effort. Flail me.

This album is incredibly technical, even more so than Symbolic, yet I find it highly addictive to listen to, thete are so many Melodic riffs, and outstanding drumming and bass throughout the whole album, and there are so many changes during each song that no song sounds the same, all with unique melodies, and technicality, and the guitar solo's are absolutely outstanding. A Pure genius masterpiece IMO.

where is Scream Bloody Gore?

Usually in this meme template there are 6 people, and death made 7 albums, so kinda crowdy.
But since instead of making a graphic, I wrote it, I could add Scream Bloody Gore I guess, but whatever you get the drill

I guess that's normal for most records though. I very rarely like more than a few songs in each album. That's what playlists are for 😁

For me this is Death's best because of Spirit Crusher alone. This song encapsulates everything I love about metal and cannot find in any other style of music. Melody, aggression, emotion, speed, talent and complexity all thrown in the mix 🖤🖤🖤

Only problem here is that it reaches some very low lows. There are at most 3 songs I enjoy on this record, which is quite unfortunate since it used to be one of my favorites.
Also I'm not sure I get your statement, I find a lot of albums to be overall very enjoyable with maybe one or two weaker tracks here and there, do you usually only like 3 or 4 tracks in an album?

Yap. That's me. I'm weird like that I guess. 😁 For most albums I like, only 2 or 3 songs make my playlists. There are only a few exceptions to that rule. Morbid Angel (obviously), Slayer, Megadeth and lately I've been obsessed with Black Crown Initiate, Nailed to Obscurity, Xaon and Rivers of Nihil. Most of their albums I can pretty much enjoy from start to finish...

I agree. It's quite typical of the modern generation iPod shuffler but I've not seen many metal fans admit this.

You do understand the difference between liking an album VS liking all songs in an album equally, right? 🤔
Also, I believe in being generous with my ratings. I am a metal fan after all.

I don't see what putting me in an arbitrary category does for you, but I wouldn't call myself modern. I'm over 40. 😁

Also I find it strange that I have to explain how playlists work. Mixtapes were a thing long before iPod was invented. I didn't just appear in some fucked-up parallel universe, right??? 🤣🤣🤣

I might have misunderstood you then, because you said "I very rarely like more than a few songs in each album" which is not the same thing as "liking all songs in an album equally". But that arguing is pointless, you rate albums as you wish

No problems here mate. I was talking about songs that make my playlists but maybe I mentioned that in another comment. I am especially fussy when it comes to my workout playlists. 😁

I just don't understand why this is rated so high compared to their earlier work. The vocals suck, the songs repeat for much longer than they should, and what a terrible cover of painkiller. The songwriting just feels kinda disconnected. Like when they put in a dissonant bass interlude when they need to get to a new part, often times I just think that the song could end instead. Compare this to something like Atheist to see how progressive thrash/death is done in a fantastic and creative way.
