Devin Townsend - To Release New Solo Material

On his MySpace page Devin Townsend (ex-Strapping Young Lad, ex-Devin Townsend Band) published a brief interview announcing a new solo album, "Ki".

Townsend commented: "Ki" is the first of 4 albums in a series of albums under the moniker 'Devin Townsend Project.' Each album is essentially a different "band" (or collection of session musicians) playing my music. They were chosen based on what the theme of the album is, and the vibe that the album is trying to project. The album "Ki" is very specific in this quartet of albums in that it controls its anger throughout the album barring one song (Heaven Send), and really is an exercise in having little to prove."

The whole interview can be read here. According to a message from Townsend on his forums, "Ki" will be released in late May or June. An album teaser can be found at this location.

Devin Townsend - Puts An End To Strapping Young Lad & The Devin Townsend Band

It has been reported that Devin Townsend has announced during a Ziltoid the Omniscient press conference that he has put an end to Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band, and that he shall do no more tours in the future. He will though apparently continue to release solo music.

"Yesterday InsideOut Music and the Tora! Company held an exclusive media showcase for the new Devin Townsend solo album Ziltoid The Omniscient, including an appearance and Q&A session with the man himself. This turned out to not in fact include a musical performance from Devin, but a hilarious puppet show using Devin's superb hand-made rubber Ziltoid puppet he uses in the videos on the Ziltoid MySpace page, and held a press conference from a booth on the stage of the Underworld in Camden, London.

Ziltoid took questions from the audience and during his answers he mentioned Devin would be moving into the mountains, never to be seen from again.

The audience thought it was part of the Ziltoid act, but after a while a tired looking Townsend emerged and confirmed that he is, indeed, quitting and moving to a remote town in Northern Canada.

He plans to continue to make "a ton of music", some of which will be heavy, some ambient, like his other new CD The Hummer, and everything in between. He's going to build a new studio at his new house, and will be keeping his studio in Vancouver where he produces other bands. So every now and again a Devin Townsend album will emerge, possibly on the internet, but he won't tour and won't be doing any other kind of public appearances, like interviews etc.

Eight months ago he and his wife had their first child, Reyner Liam Johnstan Townsend, and his arrival has accelerated Devin's decision to back away from the limelight, but is not the sole reason for it. He said these are feelings he's had for some time, and is just so tired of touring and doing interviews and being the focus of things. He also said he's tired of Strapping Young Lad. The last tour was a real struggle for him to muster any enthusiasm, mostly because SYL was initially created to vent all his frustrations, which no longer exist. He's not the angry early-twenties nutter anymore. He's a mellow mid-thirties nutter, and doesn't feel the need to be screaming at everyone.

So, Strapping Young Lad is over for good. So is the Devin Townsend Band. Devin's music will be made solo from now on, and he will continue to produce other peoples' music, but will not tour."

Devin Townsend - Ziltoid The Omniscient Samples Online

Devin Townsend has posted three tracks from his next solo album, entitled "Ziltoid the Omniscient", at the project's MySpace page. Check out the songs 'ZTO', 'By Your Command' and 'Hyperdrive' at this location.

The CD, which will be released under the Devin Townsend banner instead of The Devin Townsend Band, was recorded completely by Devin, who took care of the singing, guitar, bass, synthesizers and sampling duties, in addition to mixing and producing the album on his own. Devin has stated on the HevyDevy forums that he used "the drumkit from Hell" on this release ? the same kit that was previously utilized by Meshuggah on "Catch Thirty-Three" and which was developed by Meshuggah's Tomas Haake.

Check out the cover artwork at this location (art created by Travis Smith).

More info about the album here.

The story as follows (without revealing too much): Ziltoid The Omniscient, a 4th dimensional alien has come to earth and is currently hovering five miles above Qatar. Beaming messages to the earth, including video, music, and words, His Omniscient-ness has one dimension up on us humans, allowing him control over time. But, in order to bend time he requires the perfect fuel - BLACK COFFEE - found in abundance on only one planet in the omniverse... Earth. He plays guitar and sings, is moody and a bit sensitive, with his first record due in late June. Surrounded by nymphs and prancing plasma beings, the album was produced by Devin Townsend in the hangar of the Ziltoidian space barge. All hail Ziltoid and his Infinity metal! Prepare your finest brew!

Ziltoid doesn't want to destroy the earth now...he just wants to be known as the best guitar player and get lots of chicks."

Devin Townsend - Tour Postponed

Synchestra has been extremely well received, more than any other DT records. it made the charts in France, Germany and Finland so we would thank each and everyone of you that managed to get a copy. The DTB released a video for 'Vampira'. This video is available in the Fan section. This video is very funny and maybe not what you expect from an album like Synchestra but we hope it gets some attention anyway.

To finish, a European tour was planned for the DTB in May but we apologize as it was forced to be cancelled. The reason is not for Ozzfest or the new SYL record but Devin and Tracy are going to have a baby so they needed to be together for the first part of the pregnancy and medical tests. The baby is due in October which will postpone any touring until 2007.

Devin Townsend - News & Updates

Some interesting facts from Devin Townsend website:

"Devin continues to work on the DTB DVD. With everything else going on he has not been able to devote a consistent amount of time to the project but has been diligently working when time allows. The audio should be mixed while he is on the promo tour so not much longer to completion. He has also been writing and jamming the new DTB album that he hopes to begin recording after the SYL tour, we will keep you updated about the new album recording process very soon.

Thanks to all the fans that opened their mind to Devlab. It was surprising for us to see all the attention that went into this record. Records like Devlab are very useful for Dev's creativity. As there is no musical boundary for him, we will continue to release website-only projects as Dev likes to make little records and share them.

After a little promo tour in Europe for SYL (February) Devin started production with the Ozzfest and Victory Records band Darkest Hour in Vancouver : "Devin is the man and it is only going to get crazier".

WHAT THE HECK IS DEVIN DOING ON MTV/HBO/VH1 !!!

It's a secret for everyone but in December, we received a mail from MTV people that they would like Devin to play in ad clips for the Osbournes final season. Devin agreed and flyed in New York to for a few days of filming in a serie of 5 ads. The whole experience was a lot of fun and Dev has an all-new respect for actors and highly praises the kids he performed with".
