Ultimatium - Cancel Deal With Mastervox Records

Finnish metallers Ultimatium have issued the following update on their MySpace blog:

"Ultimatium has decided to cancel their recording deal with Mastervox Records, affecting immediately. Because decision about recording and releasing of third album was not made in time by Mastervox Records, Ultimatium sees that deal has been fulfilled and Mastervox records does not wish to use their option for third album. In the end, musical differences and visions about third album between artist and label were just too apart. And to make things clear, we tried to avoid this until the inevitable end and we would have been pleased to record our new album for Mastervox Records, but it takes two for a dialog...

We will continue working with third album and will start recording it on third quarter of 2010. Ultimatium is now seeking for new partners to work with, mainly someone to release the album and handle marketing etc. So labels, managers, promoters, if you'd like to know more, contact info ultimatium com.

New promo pictures and samples/teasers of their "controversial" pre-production demos have been added to their slightly updated web site Ultimatium.com, so enjoy.

Ultimatium also activates on matter of gigs and hopefully you'll be able to see us on stage next summer and second half of 2010."

Into Eternity - New Album On The Way

Canadian metallers Into Eternity have issued the following update on their MySpace blog:

"A few days ago I checked my mail and was happy to find out Toy's Factory had sent me the Japanese releases of our last 2 releases: The Scattering Of Ashes and The Incurable Tragedy! It's nice to know that we have such great industry people and fans supporting us in Japan. I will never forget the great times we had in 2008 and 2009. Japan rules!

In other news, we have started rehearsals again and things are coming along. We have also started on "song 1". I have lots of music demoed at home now, so we are looking through it and starting our first new song. So far the song starts with an arpeggio instrumental and then heads into some heavy riffing.

Thanks for all the emails we have been getting wondering what is going on, well here it is. Thanks again to Japan for all the continued support!"

Jeroen Paul Thesseling Offering Bass Guitar Lessons In Europe

OBSCURA / PESTILENCE bassist Jeroen Paul Thesseling, who is known for his signature six-string fretless playing in progressive death metal, is offering private bass lessons and personal coaching in metal and other styles. "These lessons are suitable for bass players of all levels who want to get more out of their instrument. Many bassists in metal and other genres concentrate primarily on playing techniques, while there's often more that could be developed. The main focus, therefore, will be on intonation, tone development, bass arrangements and fretless playing", says Thesseling. The lessons will be given in Amsterdam , the Netherlands , as well as in Genoa , Italy . Interested parties can contact Jeroen via his official website www.jeroenthesseling.com

Witchery - New Album In July, New Song Online

Official press release

In July 2010 Witchery will return with the new album Witchkrieg and new vocalist Legion (ex-Marduk, ex-Devian).

Jensen: "So it's finally for a new Witchery album! And not just any ol' new album, no sir. This is quite possibly the best Witchery album to date. Let me correct myself. This is the best Witchery album to date. I know a lot of bands claim their current releases to be 'their best work' and everyone knows that's a load of bullshit. However, in our case, I can say its 100% true. If you don't believe me, then check out the album. You will notice how your flapping jaws slowly close, how you crank the volume and how you forget about your miserable life for while! On a sadder note, due to conflicting schedules, we have had to part ways with founding member Toxine. We wish our brother in metal all the best in the future. Therefore, I would like to introduce to the world, a new unholy axis of musical terror. We wish to welcome a new fulltime member to the Witchery coven; none other than: Legion!"

The album was again mixed and mastered Antfarm studios by Tue Madsen (Dark Tranquillity, The Haunted, Heaven Shall Burn). The heroic cover artwork was created by Andreas "Diaz" Pettersson. As a first appetizer of the unholy axis of musical terror, go to the newly designed MySpace page and check out "The Reaver" featuring guest guitar solos by Gary Holt and Lee Altus of the mighty Exodus. There are a couple more guests on Witchkrieg: ultimate kings of Thrash, forgotten heroes and highly influential masters of six-string mayhem. So watch out for more news to start the Witchkrieg.

Witchery's spell was cast upon our earthly existence when four members splintered off Satanic Slaughter in 1997: Jensen (later with The Haunted), Richard Corpse, Toxine and Mique. "We had such a great time together that we decided to continue under another name", recalls Jensen (guitars). Before recording their debut-album Restless And Dead, Jensen met Sharlee D'Angelo (also of Arch Enemy and Mercyful Fate fame, among others) and got him on board for the unholy alliance. The album was released in 1998 and was very well received, so Witchery recorded the Witchburner mini-album later during the same year.

Not too long after its release, Witchery did their first US tour together with Borknagar and Emperor in July of 1999 and didn't take much time to rest. Their second full-length album Dead, Hot And Ready was unleashed soon thereafter and was followed by a six week European tour with Moonspell and Kreator in early 2000. After concentrating on duties with their other bands, Witchery got back together to record Symphony For The Devil in 2001. It was the first recording with their current drummer Martin Axenrot (also in Bloodbath and Opeth, as well as a late member of Satanic Slaughter) who joined the circle of black magic after Mique had left the band. Later during the same year Witchery did a US tour along with The Haunted before falling into hibernation for some time. Their debut on Century Media Records, Don't Fear The Reaper came out 2006, showcasing not only a cover-version of the Satanic Slaughter classic "Immortal Death", but also Witchery's feel for catchy and precise metal tunes.

Narnia - Call It Quits

Swedish metallers Narnia have issued the following update on their MySpace blog:

"Some of you may have heard rumors, and some of You may be surprised by what you're about to read. We confirm today that we're facing the end of the journey of this band. We want to thank all our fans, friends and our families who stood behind us all the time. Thank You for believing.

The decision was made around new-year 09/10. It's time to move on. Music business is tough, and it's getting tougher every day. But it's also the greatest business to be in thanks to the crowds and the people we've met along this long road. Thank You for sharing Your stories and for letting our music and message be a part of You lives.

Last summer, after a concert, a guy around the age of 20-25 walked up to me, thanked me for the show and said "I listened a lot to you guys when I was a kid" (...and I thought we were still kids...hey, wake up).

To celebrate this long journey we will do one more concert that will serve as the Grand Finale of Narnia.

The event has been chosen with great care and we hope to announce this... soon.

Stay tuned, God bless...over and out."

Darkwater - New Album In The Works

The Swedish progressive metal band Darkwater will start recording their second album next week. Joining them on the album is Simon Andersson (ex-Pain Of Salvation) on bass. The yet untitled album will be mixed this summer by Fredrik Nordström (At The Gates, In Flames, Dimmu Borgir) at Studio Fredman, and is planned for a fall 2010 release through Ulterium Records.

Henrik Båth of Darkwater comments: "We're thrilled and eager to head into the studio and record our second album. Our debut album was received so much better than we could have hoped for, but still we feel that we can top it. We've got some great material ready to be recorded, and with the addition of Simon Andersson on bass as well as Fredrik Nordström for the mixing of the album everything feels right. We're definitely ready to take everything to the next level with this release."

The debut album from Darkwater Calling The Earth To Witness was released 2007 and received excellent feedback from around the world, and among other things resulted in a show at the Bay Area Rock Festival in San Francisco, CA together with Liquid Tension Experiment in 2008.

Type O Negative - Peter Steele Dead At 48 [UPDATE]

KNAC, Blabbermouth, The Gauntlet and many other sources claim that Peter Steele of the New York Gothic Metal outfit Type O Negative has passed away on Wednesday 14 April 2010 due to cardiac arrest.

Peter Steele, also known as frontman of the band Carnivore, has already died once as a publicity stunt back in 2005. Due to this, we are not yet going to believe in the rumors of his passing this time around. We'll keep you updated as we find out more.

If he's dead, that sucks. If not, fool me once...

UPDATED

Sadly, Peter Steele's death has now been confirmed to us by an SPV representative. Blabbermouth and even the band's official website also contain confirmation.

Peter Steele is dead at 48. His cause of death is not yet confirmed. There are a lot of fans of the band amongst Metal Storm staffers and users and all of us definitely feel devastated by Pete's untimely passing. You still had a few great albums in you, Peter. It is a shame we will never hear them.

UPDATE

Here's the official word from the band:

"It is with great sadness that we inform you that Type O Negative front man, bassist, and our band mate, Peter Steele passed away last night of what appears to be heart failure.

Ironically Peter had been enjoying a long period of sobriety and improved health and was imminently due to begin writing and recording new music for our follow up to Dead Again released in 2007.

The official cause of death has yet to be determined pending autopsy results. The funeral services will be private and memorial services will be announced at a future date. We'd like to share our thoughts and those of Peter's family below. We are truly saddened to lose our friend and appreciate the tremendous outpouring today from around the world."

The Iron Cross - Finnish Metal Documentary

A new humorous documentary film, directed by Kalle Kujala, titled Rautaa Rajan Taa - roughly translated as The Iron Cross - debuts today, on the 16th of April, 2010 in Finnish theatres. The film features many important Finnish metal bands and artists including Amorphis, Hanoi Rocks, Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish, Korpiklaani, Sonata Arctica, Eicca Toppinen from Apocalyptica, Diablo, and rising band Dauntless.

The film is a tribute to Finnish metal music and hard rock's success abroad. The main topics of the film include the Finnish government's subsidies for metal music and the current popularity of heavy metal music in Finland. It explores the importance of metal as a cultural export and the reasoning behind tax reimbursements as attested by Mauri Pekkarinen, also know as the "Parliament Terrier", the Finnish Minister of Economic Affairs. Finnish television and radio personality Jone Nikula is also featured.

Shot between December 2007 and July 2009 in Finland, as well as the cities of Brussels, Amsterdam, Milan, New York and Stockholm, the featured bands are questioned about heavy metal music's essence and the conclusion and implications of heavy metal are discussed.

More info at this location.
