Psychic For Radio - New Prog Rock Supergroup
A new prog supergroup has arisen called Psychic For Radio - the band line-up is:
Michael Sadler (vocalist, ex-Saga)
Mark Zonder (drummer, Slavior, ex-Fates Warning)
Shawn Gordon (keyboardist and guitarist)
The history of the band goes as follows:
"In early 2005 Shawn Gordon and Henning Pauly were having a conversation about music when Shawn shared a story about hearing songs in his head that then were on the radio and said "I'm psychic for radio", to which he also joked it would make a good band name. At this point Shawn and Henning came up with an idea to basically do a punk album with a group of people living at the studio for 3 or 4 days and video tape the whole thing like a Spinal Tap mockumentary. Shortly after, they were talking to Michael Sadler at CalProg and trying to talk him in to doing it as well, which he seemed open to.
So things didn't end up happening on the punk front and Henning moved back to Germany, but Shawn still liked the idea of getting a group of musicians together for a weekend and seeing what they could come up with, so he contacted his friend Kurt Barabas from Under The Sun and the two of them got it organized, they had the weekend in July 2006 and got some good ideas recorded. Michael was still open to doing vocals, but initially we were just thinking a couple songs and having 3 or 4 vocalists on the album.
Things got stalled for about 6 months and then we were able to schedule a vocal session on the first song with Michael and it was looking like we were gonna get moving, but with Kurts work on Amaran's Plight and Michaels heavy schedule, we got delayed again till later in 2007 when we got more progress done, but we still needed to resolve the drummer and guitarist for the final recordings. A chance conversation with Mark Zonder and Shawn Gordon got him on board with drums in between his work with Slavior. Then in late 2007 Shawn talked to Sean Entriken of Prymary and we got him on board.
So Psychic for Radio is a project from Shawn and Kurt, it might be a one off, we don't know, we just want to finish this one and see how the reaction is and we'll just go from there. Everyone has their 'day jobs' to attend to and there are some other unrelated music projects coming from ProgRock Records that Shawn and Kurt are also involved in. Michael, Mark and Sean all have their own projects and bands that they are also heavily involved in that you should see later this year."
The band announced that with one song left, all of the music is now written and recorded for their debut album. The album title and art concept has also been decided, with more details to come.

Ayreon - "Elected" EP
Ayreon official website have published a press-release about a new Ayreon EP to be released at the end of April 2008 called "Elected."
On January 25, 2008 the rock operas of Arjen Lucassen and Tobias Sammet, respectively Ayreon's "01011001" and Avantasia's "The Scarecrow," were released simultaneously. The music press, always eager for a story, called this event the "Clash of the Titans," gleefully portraying the two musicians as bitter rivals and urging each to comment on the other in countless interviews. There was much speculation about which album would be more successful, but upon release both albums immediately charted in several countries around the world. When asked about the so-called rivalry, Arjen explains: "I'd not yet even heard Tobias's album, but when I found out he'd managed to get my all-time favourite artist Alice Cooper to guest on The Scarecrow, I totally freaked out and sent a hate-mail to Tobias's MySpace. Fortunately, he never received it."
Coincidentally however, Tobias, who was fed up with having to talk about Arjen in interviews, grudgingly decided it was time to get acquainted. He emailed Arjen, and in the stream of email and insults that followed "it turned out that Tobias hated me just as much for having got Bruce Dickinson to guest on an Ayreon album, haha!" Arjen explains. Despite their mutual hatred, the two musicians eventually hatched a plan to put some fuel on the fire created by the press by doing the unthinkable: recording a song together. The result is a mind-blowing over-the-top cover version of Elected, the original version of which was a big hit for Alice Cooper back in 1973.
The song "Elected" will be featured on a 4-track EP released by Inside Out Music/SPV (release dates: 25 April for Germany/Austria/Switzerland; 28 April for Europe). The 3 other tracks featured on the EP are an acoustic live radio session of the "01011001" track "E=mc2" with Marjan Welman on vocals, "Ride the Comet" taken from the album "01011001," and a touching piano-only version of "The Human Equation" track "Day Six: Childhood" featuring Joost van den Broek and Marjan Welman.
The cover can be viewed here.
In other news. The latest Ayreon album "01011001" will be released on vinyl.
As reported in the Arjen Lucassen newsletter #82, the new Ayreon album "0011001" is to be released on vinyl. It will be a triple-album set on clear vinyl. However, the mid-March release date has been postponed. The new (but still tentative!) release dates are as follows: Germany, Austria, Switzerland: 11 April; Europe: 14 April; USA: 22 April.

Wolf - Mercyful Fate Cover Online
A few days ago, Swedish Heavy Metallers Wolf have posted the following message on their MySpace:
"As many off you know, and many of you DON'T know, Wolf did a cover of Mercyful Fate's "A Dangerous Meeting" on the 2002 release "Black Wings". We thought we'd share that with those off you that missed out, so we "gave" the song to the Wolf UK MySpace site. We're fans of metal, good metal that is, and there's no doubt about the impact Mercyful Fate have had on Wolf so we did a cover of 'em to show our appreciation. Getting the (devilish) blessing from several Mercyful Fate members for that version made us believe in metal even more! So go to http://www.myspace.com/wolfwarriorsuk and enjoy goddamnit, enjoy!"
Wolf are currently writing the follow-up to 2006's "The Black Flame" which they will be recording this summer.

Vader - Live In Egypt And South America
On 11th of April Vader will play an exclusive show in Egypt. That's gonna be one of the first death metal shows in that part of the world! The show will take place in Kair at La Villa Club. Local acts Worm and Dark Philosphy will appear on stage as support acts. The show will be organized by Music Gates agency. "That will be definitely an exciting outing, Vader have never played in Egypt and frankly speaking, we feel almost like pioneers trying to put up a death metal flag on a "no-man's-land". We have some doubts (concerning safety and gig's organization) but hopefully the organizers of the show will do the best to make this show an unforgettable experience both for the fans and the band. We are going to play a great concert for a great audience and be back home safe and sound." - Mariusz Kmiolek (Massive Music).
In the meantime, also Dubai-based death/thrash band Nervecell have been confirmed as the support act on the night. It will mark Nervecell's second appearance in Egypt, as the band had previously headlined the Egypt Metal Festival in March 2007.
Two weeks before this show Vader will appear on South American tournee, playing 10 shows together with Marduk in such countries as Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.

Die Apokalyptischen Reiter - Get New Female Guitarist
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter will be supported by Lady Cat-Man on guitar from now on. She will replace guitarist Pitrone, who the band split up with.
A statement of the band on http://www.reitermania.de reads as follows: "Hello Maniacs. There was a line up change. Pitrone is no longer part of the band. His job as guitarist will be taken over by Lady Cat-Man this instant. We hesitated for a long time to take this step, but there were many reasons to let Pitrone go and look for a replacement.
Not many of you know that Pitrone himself wanted to leave in May 2006. That hit us like a ten ton hammer back then since "Riders On The Storm" was about to be released and the Riders-tour in autumn was threatened. After a week of looking desperately for a replacement we got a surprise call from Pitrone, saying that he wanted to continue after all. So hold your horses? Since the schedule was so tight we hardly had the time to think it over. Still, the bitter aftertaste lingered. Not on tour, not during backstage parties, but being home alone with all the sudden silence there was the feeling that something wasn't working, somehow everything felt tainted.
In the past few months the impression got stronger that it was no longer five guys standing on the same side of things. Small things cumulated, the anger was rising, different views on the sound of the band became obvious. For a long time it was unthinkable to continue without Pitrone, but the harder we were working on the new album the more we got unsatisfied with him. We talked with him many times about what should be improved and about the fact that we were unhappy with the situation. We have been waiting for a sign from his side for a long time - until we couldn´t wait any longer.
This wasn't a decision against Pitrone as a person. We have had lots of awesome months, weeks and days together since 2002. We would like to thank him for all the unforgettable moments. But in the end we had a decision to make. A decision against Pitrone, but in favour of the band. This is not about having a bad phase. We´re all just human beings and nobody can be hypercreative all of the time. But we simply had the feeling that Pitrone couldn't invest much enthusiasm in the band in the last couple of months. So we consider this step inevitable.
We´re currently housed in the Principal studio (where also "Riders On The Storm" was recorded) to record our new album. This one will be released end of summer. Don´t expect anything less than an absolute killer record! The sound is damn heavy, melodic and chock full of surprises. Lady Cat-Man may look like an angel, but she's playing like the devil! Treat our Metal sister real nice, she is part of the family now."

Krisiun - Sign USA Deal With Strictly Heavy Management
BW&BK has received a Krisiun press release stating the band signed with Strictly Heavy Management on March 1st. It appears below:
"It is often the case, a successful metal band will seek out management assistance after being signed to a major label, touring the world, and even selling many records. A decision not easily reached, likely due to the many management horror stories reported among our industry peers. With long-term career aspirations, the Brazilian Death Metal band Krisiun sought a personal management agreement with Strictly Heavy Management, owned and operated by the veteran personal manager, Theresa C. Mullins-Aldao.
Strictly Heavy Management is proud to announce the signing of Krisiun to an exclusive North American territory personal management deal. Strictly Heavy Management (SHM) was founded in 1995, with it's first three (3) metal bands on the roster which were also from South America. Owner, Theresa Aldao says, "heavy metal never died down there, but Krisiun's geographic location warrants special attention to communication and functioning details. Krisiun is signed to one of the best metal labels, they tour and sell their products around the world. No doubt the band has incredible label support, but it is my desire to bring them to the forefront. To increase their sale figures, to increase their performance draw, to build their demand. Building the business of the band is what we are all about."
Krisiun is entering the studio March 18th until April 18 2008 in Germany, with their newest LP release this summer, again on Century Media Records. Tour plans are in the works, and considerable strategies for long-term industry opportunities are planned."

Mithras - Part Ways With Candlelight Records
Leon Macey from Mithras has posted the following statement:
"Firstoff, we're no longer signed to Candlelight Records. Although we signed with them for a possible three albums (of which "Behind The Shadows Lie Madness" was the first), Candlelight decided not to take up the option in our contract for what we're just calling "album four" atm, giving the reason that we don't tour. While we're not particularly disgruntled by this, it did come as a bit of a surprise given the fact we made them aware we weren't a touring band when they signed us (and we signed as a duo). However, the music industry has changed a lot over the last few years and it is definitely a different and harder market these days. Nonetheless, it was a great experience working with Candlelight on "Behind The Shadows..." and we wish them all the best for the future. Work continues on album four as I type this...
But rather than start a hunt for a new record label and go through agonising negotiations, we've taken the astoundingly obvious and logical step of signing to my own label Galactic Records for our next release, which is scheduled to be an extensive double cd package and celebrates the 10th anniversary of Mithras. More details to follow..."

Metallica - To Re-Issue Early Albums On Vinyl
Metallica have issued the following update:
"While we're finishing up the new album, we told the dudes at the record company we thought it might be cool to dust off the old tapes and get all retro with some vinyl re-releases... First up are the first two albums (duh!?), "Kill 'Em All" and "Ride The Lightning," coming out on April 15 in North America and pretty fucking close to that in the rest of the world.
There will be two versions... one like the original on a single disc spinning at 33 1/3, the other a two disc, 180 gram vinyl, 45 rpm package all in a double gatefold. The music was half speed mastered from the original analog tapes at Mobile Fidelity to bring you audiophile quality.
Both versions will be available in the online store here and over at Met Club. Oh, and in case you were wondering, "Master" and "Justice" will obviously be next and should be coming out on vinyl in June."

Týr - Replacement Drummer For Paganfest Tour
Folk metallers Týr have posted the following update on their website:
"Due to injury Kári Streymoy will not be able to man the drumkit during the coming Paganfest tour in Europe, Canada and the US. We are sad at not having him with us, but we have found a worthy replacement for the Europe part of the Paganfest in 20-year old Amon Djurhuus, also from the Faroe Islands.
Amon was first introduced to drumming by Kári himself and has studied with him for a number of years. We've rehearsed with Amon wielding the drumsticks and are confident in his ability to fill Kári's shoes.
For the Canadian and US part of the Paganfest Merlin Sutter, the drummer from Eluveitie, will fill in for Kári."

Dying Fetus - Part Ways With Guitarist
Dying Fetus have posted the following update:
"Mike Kimball has resigned his position in Dying Fetus. Here is a statement from Mike: "This is easily the most difficult decision I've ever had to make in my life. I have had moments where I felt that it might be time to part ways with Dying Fetus but didn't want to accept it, out of love for performing as a musician, and of course being less than thrilled with the prospect of disappointing my band mates or the fans. Being in Dying Fetus has been an amazing experience, and I'm eternally grateful to the guys in the band (past and present), as well as all of our crew members, all the bands we have toured with, and most of all the fans for their support. Thank you all so much!"
We are now holding auditions, live or video. Tablature is available on dyingfetus.com under media. Learn the songs; "Praise The Lord," "Pissing In The Mainstream," and "Justifiable Homicide." Contact us here, serious inquiries only. Must have NO criminal record and valid passport. Send all videos to: Dying Fetus -- 643 Widener Lane -- Smyrna, DE 19977″
